Book Synopsis Ecology, Systematics, and the Natural History of Predaceous Diving Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) by : Donald A. Yee
Download or read book Ecology, Systematics, and the Natural History of Predaceous Diving Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) written by Donald A. Yee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd edition of this comprehensive book provides one of the most complete overviews of the aquatic beetles in the family Dytiscidae, also known as predaceous diving beetles. Dytiscids constitute one of the largest families of freshwater insects with approximately 4,650 named species that come in a variety of sizes, colors, and habitat affinities. Although dytiscid adults and larvae are ubiquitous throughout a variety of aquatic habitats, and are important predators on other aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates, there are no compilations that have focused on summarizing the knowledge on aspects of their ecology, systematics, and biology. Chapters in this book summarize hitherto scattered topics, including their anatomy and habitats, chemical and community ecology, phylogenies and larval morphology including chaetotaxy, sexual systems, predation, dispersal, conservation, and cultural and historical aspects. The 2nd edition offers updates on the newest scientific findings on dytiscids and also includes a new chapter on the subterranean fauna from Australia. The information in this new edition is potentially beneficial to anyone working in aquatic systems where dytiscids are an important part of the food web. Moreover, readers will gain a greater appreciation of dytiscids as model organisms for investigations of fundamental principles derived from ecological and evolutionary theory. Contributed chapters are by authors who are actively engaged in studying dytiscids, and each chapter provides color photos and future directions for research.
Book Synopsis Coleoptera, Beetles. Morphology and Systematics by : Rolf G. Beutel
Download or read book Coleoptera, Beetles. Morphology and Systematics written by Rolf G. Beutel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the first of three volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treats the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With over 380,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. Moreover, numerous species are tremendously important economically. The beetle volumes meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages, phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book Synopsis Geological Records of the Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex Framed in a Patagonian Orogenic Belt Regional Context by : Rogelio Daniel Acevedo
Download or read book Geological Records of the Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex Framed in a Patagonian Orogenic Belt Regional Context written by Rogelio Daniel Acevedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the Fuegian Andes in Argentina, showing both simple and complex aspects. The first ones refer to the general stratigraphy of the area and the latter result from their tectonic characteristics. Concerning the stratigraphy, an appraisal of the denomination and valorization of formations of Jurassic and early Cretaceous age is performed here to reach the simple scheme of the Fuegian-Patagonian continuity under the name of “Fuegian Andes Deformed Complex”. As an essay the formational nomenclature is simplified and the local concept of basement is evaluated. In relation to their structural aspects it is assumed that the formation of the orogenic Fuegian arc and the folding of the Mesozoic and early Tertiary layers are connected phenomena. Tectonic forces from the West, the Northeast and the South have had participation in the formation of the tectonic arc. The lithostatic column pressure was added once the layers were folded and thrusted upwards during the birth of the Fuegian Andes. Even the speculation of a great main fold overturned to North, as an abstraction, is considered. Instead, the Magallanes-Fagnano fault is appreciated only as a product of the transcurrent Quaternary movements, lacking associated eruptive processes that contribute to define plate borders.

Book Synopsis Operations Deep Freeze 63 and 64 by : Kenneth A. Countryman
Download or read book Operations Deep Freeze 63 and 64 written by Kenneth A. Countryman and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic observations were conducted aboard USS EDISTO (AGB-2) during DEEP FREEZE 63 and USS ATKA (AGB-3) during DEEP FREEZE 64. Emphasis was focused on the distribution of water masses in the Ross Sea and the identifying physical characteristics of each type. NAVOCEANO personnel obtained data at 122 stations during DF-63 and at 79 stations during DF-64. Included in these totals are 23 annual ice forecasting stations which were reoccupied both years along the Victoria Land coast and in McMurdo Sound to determine sea ice potential by the heat budget reversal. The stations occupied on DF-63 were in the western half of the Ross Sea and most of those occupied on DF-64 were in the eastern half. Station data include vertical distribution of observed temperatures, salinities, dissolved oxygens, and phosphate-phosphorus and machine computed densities, specific volume anomalies, dynamic height anomalies, and sound velocities. Selected cross-section profiles of observed physical and chemical properties are presented to illustrate the water masses in the Ross Sea. Water types are defined and discussed. From the data presented, it is evident that warmer water from oceanic depths moves in over the continental shelf and is forced to the surface causing the central Ross Sea to become ice free earlier than surrounding areas. Additionally, there is evidence of the formation of colder, more dense, Shelf Water during the austral winter which acts as a barrier to this warmer water intrusion into the south-southwestern extremities of the sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Weevils: Volume IV covers the 11 smaller tribes of the weevil subfamily Entiminae (broad-nosed weevils), which comprises more than 100 genera and 700 described species in Australia. Around half of this fauna is covered in Volume IV, featuring keys to all the tribes, genera and described species as well as updated concepts and diagnoses of the tribes and summarising accounts of the taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution and known hostplants of all the genera and species. All the introduced species of Entiminae in Australia, most of which are regarded as agricultural or horticultural pests, are included, as are descriptions of 12 new genera and eight new species and identifications of about another 240 undescribed species. The book also includes an overview of the salient characters of the Entiminae, illustrated on 18 colour plates of diagnostic features needed for identifying these weevils, alongside a further 180 colour plates illustrating the habitus and genitalia of all the genera and of several other species and their diagnostic characters. The volume further includes an obituary and full publication list of the late Elwood C. Zimmerman as well as an updated list of recent literature on the Australian Entiminae and other weevils. The book is an essential reference work for researchers and students working with entimine weevils both in Australia and abroad. It is part of the Australian Weevils series.
