Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Features of Modern Medicine AN appointment to the lectureship founded by an appro ciative and generous patron of science, the late Morris K. J esup, Esq., has given me an Opportunity to present some of the striking features of modern medicine which illustrate its genuinely scientific character, its great change from the medi cine of the past, and its hopeful outlook for the future. Obviously no attempt could here be made to survey its whole field; but I have endeavored, through a consideration of selected topics, to depict its spirit. Human beings may be divided into those who do, and those who do not, believe in the efficiency of medicine. The relative number of non believers has always been small, and is doubtless much less now than in the days of the Greeks and of Moliere, but their sentiments have ever been loudly proclaimed. It is hoped that these pages may be read by both classes. They may perchance help to fortify the believers, and, if not actually to convert the dissenters, at least to make their doubts appear less rational. The labors of a learned profession can easily be belittled by those who are less learned. I shall be gratified if what I have here written shall be instrumental in inducing laymen to study the human body and appreciate what men of medicine are now doing to maintain health and to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure disease. When laymen do this, the influence of medical cults and healing sects is sure to decline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Modern Medicine: Including Principles of Pathology, and Therapeutics, With Many Useful Memoranda and Valuable Tables for Reference Tm: belief that a work of condensed form, embracing the most impor tant facts and observations which mark the progress of scientific and practical medicine, would be of valuable aid to medical students, as well as a useful book of reference for the general practitioner, has led to the appearance of this publication. As indicated on the title-page, the work is elementary in character, and is not intended to supplant any of the many excellent and elaborate vol umes comprising the details of medicine. But it has been suggested that an abridged work, presenting the more advanced views of leading satheri ties throughout the world with reference to general pathology and thera peulica, considered in connection with certain other points of practical importance, if arranged for convenient and ready reference (and of suita ble form to be carried in the pocket), might prove of infinitely more value to a busy practitioner than many larger and more cumbrous volumes which fill the shelves of our libraries. To meet this requirement, the main object of the author has been to collate from the transactions of learned medical societies, recent medical periodicals, monographs, and systematic treatises, the utterances of the most experienced representatives of modern medicine, so far as they re late to a knowledge of those general principles which may be considered indispensable to the proper investigation and treatment of disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Biochemistry in Modern Medicine In attempting to fulfil these requirements, it has been deemed essen tial to go back to the fundamentals of the subject, and to explain as simply as possible the physical and physicochemical principles upon which so large a part of physiological knowledge depends. Physiology may be considered as an application of the known laws and facts of physics and chemistry to explain the functions of living matter, and it is only after the extent to which this application can be made has been appreciated, that the knowledge may be used to serve as the foundation upon which a superstructure of clinical knowledge can be built. Some of them even lack the very semblance of any support. Many cases of beriberi occur in well-nourished strong individuals, and the blood examination in acute or recent cases shows neither pernicious anaemia nor any anaemia at all. The author has examined the blood in a number of acute and chronic cases and has found no characteristic blood changes, although the cases of longer standing may show a varying degree of secondary anaemia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Medicine, Vol. 2: Its Theory and Practice, in Original Contributions by American and Foreign Authors; Infectious Diseases Infectious Chemical Agents. - Benjamin Moore believes that certain infectious diseases of unknown etiology may be caused by enzymes. He finds in autocatalysis an example of a chemical action that explains the apparent reproduction of the Virus in infectious diseases. In autocatalysis the reaction at first proceeds very slowly, gradually acquiring increasing speed as the products accumulate. When copper or mercury come in con tact with nitrous acid there is at first no evident action, but as nitrous acid develops, it acts catalytically, increasing the velocity of reaction and its own production at the same time Now, says Moore, there may be abnormal cellular reactions of similar catalytic character that produce the same bodies as those necessary to promote the reaction. As this chemical Virus in creases in amount it may cause the clinical picture of the disease, and on passage to other susceptible persons the same process would repeat itself. As yet this interesting theory is without experimental proof. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Medicine, Its Theory and Practice in Original Contributions by American and Foreign Authors, Vol. 3: Diseases of the Digestive System, Diseases of the Urinary System Many facts relating to digestion have come into our possessio'n during the past twenty years, but the mere accumulation of facts and their presentation in isolation Is not the most satisfactory method of studying a subject. By what laws are these facts related. '7 In what is the favorable activity of one organ dependent upon that of another? Of the various links in the digestive chain, which are the more indispensable? If we shunt the action of certain parts-through surgical intervention, what will be the final result in the organism? These are questions of vital impor tance, and by arranging our data with a view to answering such inquiries we throw most light upon the subject as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Basis of Medicine But the revolt from ignorance, which is called the heresy of one age, becomes the reform of the next, and the established order of the third; and so it has been with this great reform in medicine, and will continue to be. Another object is to point out that, while it is a very simple matter to prescribe, for example, Digitalis for a weak heart, or a bromide for an abnormally excited nervous system, such crush prescriptions are apt to be as dangerous in the long run as Colonel Hay's nigger squat on the safety valve; it is far more difficult, but also much better, to adjust the valves, stop the foaming in the boiler and the knock ing in the cylinders, and so restore the normal swing of the machinery to its highest efficiency.
