Book Synopsis Scientific Ballooning by : Nobuyuki Yajima
Download or read book Scientific Ballooning written by Nobuyuki Yajima and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to introduce scientific ballooning to the many people who are interested in the use of balloons for scientific applications. The book offers a basic understanding of the engineering details and the scientific research giving rise to balloon activities going on today. Above all, the book will serve as a guidebook for young scientists and researchers seeking to become involved in space science and technology by participating in balloon projects. The book deals with three types of balloons: large stratospheric balloons used for scientific purposes, rubber balloons used for aerological observations, and planetary balloons to be used in the atmospheres of other planets. The book provides many figures and photographs, and offers a systematic description of balloon technologies and related matters from historical background to current research topics. The contents include a theoretical discussion of ballon shape design, analysis and synthesis of flight dynamics, actual launching procedure, flight operations, and typical applications of ballooning in various scientific fields. Detailed meteorological descriptions, especially of the Earth's stratosphere and the atmosphere of other planets, are provided for investigating actual flight behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stratospheric balloons are powerful tools used to study the Earth and its atmosphere, as well as the greater cosmos beyond. This book describes the science and technology behind modern stratospheric ballooning, along with the surprising ways it has impacted our daily lives. The book takes you through every step of the process, starting with an in-depth introduction to basic balloon types and their uses before delving into balloon construction and mission planning. Along the way, you will learn about the novel technologies that have radically changed these balloons and their ability to launch, control and navigate them over specific ground targets. Next follows an exploration of their incredible applications, including research in atmospheric science, cosmology and astronomy, earth studies, meteorology, and aerobiology, and also commercial capabilities such as Internet networks and high-altitude tourism. The community of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs involved in stratospheric ballooning is only ever growing. This book shows you how these national and international efforts have truly soared in recent years, and it will be an enjoyable read for anybody interested in learning more about how science and commerce are conducted in the stratosphere, at the edge of space.

Download or read book Exploring Near Space written by Henry C. Dethloff, Ph.d. and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientific Ballooning and the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility" is the product of a NASA Historical Research Project on the History of Space and Earth Sciences with oversight of the NASA History Program Office. The work focuses on the post World War II era and the development of stratospheric ballons capable of lofting 8,000 pounds or more of scientific instruments to altitudes in excess of 120,000 feet for extended periods to enable the study of Earth's atmospheric and near space environment. It is a study of the design, engineering, the science, and the people, and of the international cooperation that has made this critical scientific investigation of Earth's near space environment possible.
Book Synopsis Proceedings, Seventh AFCRL Scientific Balloon Symposium by : George F. Nolan
Download or read book Proceedings, Seventh AFCRL Scientific Balloon Symposium written by George F. Nolan and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the papers presented at the Seventh AFCRL Scientific Balloon Symposium held in September 1972. The papers were presented in three sessions: Tethered and powered balloons, balloon-borne experiments, and instrumentation and balloon technology. In the area of tethered balloons, papers were presented on cables, drag and stability characteristics, hull design and analysis, and the results of scientific experiments using tethered balloons as sensor platforms. Papers were presented on a powered spherical balloon and a survey of possible power sources for use by this system. Presentations during the balloon-borne experiments and instrumentation session included manned balloon flights, precision pointing and control platforms and instrumentation, recovery parachute performance, gondola motion analyses, a balloon radar altimeter, and an overview of French scientific ballooning activities. During the balloon technology session a review was made of the flight results and performance of balloons with volumes in excess of 20 million cubic feet, shape and stress analysis of both nonreinforced and reinforced materials, and fabric tinting to increase solar absorptivity.

This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 3529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancements in science and engineering have occurred at a surprisingly rapid pace since the release of the seventh edition of this encyclopedia. Large portions of the reference have required comprehensive rewriting and new illustrations. Scores of new topics have been included to create this thoroughly updated eighth edition. The appearance of this new edition in 1994 marks the continuation of a tradition commenced well over a half-century ago in 1938 Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia, First Edition, was published and welcomed by educators worldwide at a time when what we know today as modern science was just getting underway. The early encyclopedia was well received by students and educators alike during a critical time span when science became established as a major factor in shaping the progress and economy of individual nations and at the global level. A vital need existed for a permanent science reference that could be updated periodically and made conveniently available to audiences that numbered in the millions. The pioneering VNSE met these criteria and continues today as a reliable technical information source for making private and public decisions that present a backdrop of technical alternatives.
