Book excerpt: This book covers water quality indices (WQI) in depth – it describes what purpose they serve, how they are generated, what are their strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best use of them. It is a concise and unique guide to WQIs for chemists, chemical/environmental engineers and government officials. Whereas it is easy to express the quantity of water, it is very difficult to express its quality because a large number of variables determine the water quality. WQIs seek to resolve the difficulty by translating a set of a large number of variables to a one-digit or a two-digit numeral. They are essential in communicating the status of different water resources in terms of water quality and the impact of various factors on it to policy makers, service personnel, and the lay public. Further they are exceedingly useful in the monitoring and management of water quality. With the importance of water and water quality increasing exponentially, the importance of this topic is also set to increase enormously because only with the use of indices is it possible to assess, express, communicate, and monitor the overall quality of any water source. - Provides a concise guide to WQIs: their purpose and generation - Compares existing methods and WQIs and outlines strengths and weaknesses - Makes recommendations on how the indices should be used and under what circumstances they apply

Book excerpt: Operators and regulators alike need to have reliable methods of measuring discharges in order to avoid disparity between what is viewed as compliance with, and breach of, regulations. This is emphasized by the increasing regulatory requirements for discharges into the aquatic environment, and the move towards Integrated Pollution Control. This book provides a concise and up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the sampling process, from legislative requirements to sampling techniques and analytical methods. Approaches to the handling, storage and communication of data are also reviewed. Case studies at the end of the book show how the methods and theory detailed in the text are applied to real sittions.

Book excerpt: This book contains contributions based on the proceedings of two symposia on food contamination held in London in April 1989 and May 1990, both of which were organised jointly by the Environment, Food Chemistry and Toxicology Groups of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The aim of these meetings was to assess the extraneous chemical contamination of food from two sources: firstly, food-chain contaminants - the presence of plant toxicants of fungal metabolites in food, or the contamination of food from environmental sources (airborne, aquatic and terrestrial); and secondly, food-production contaminants - contaminants of man-made origin brought about by a desire to facilitate food production and distribution. The contributors concentrate on the contamination of food by chemicals arising from environmental and food-production sources. Chapter 1 is concerned with food-chain contaminants present in food as natural components of the diet. This is followed by discussion of the chlorinated dioxins and furans, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Following an introduction to the control and surveillance of food-production contaminants, four areas of activity are described: migration from food contact materials with particular reference to plastics, the analysis and regulatory control of veterinary products, the analysis of pesticides in drinking water and finally the problem of food taints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide pollution of groundwater results from agricultural practices, the properties of the substance and its behavior in the soil environment, and the characteristics of aquifers and their vulnerability. Pesticide Risk in Groundwater provides an overview of the main issues concerning pesticide pollution of groundwater worldwide. The book is divided into five sections. Section I reviews experimental data of groundwater monitoring to indicate the extent of the problem on a global basis. Based on this evaluation, herbicides are examined in depth. Section II describes predictive approaches to estimate the distribution and fate of pesticides, and includes a chapter devoted to hydrogeological aspects affecting the vulnerability of aquifers. The third section evaluates pesticides in relation to their toxicology. It critically examines the criteria and procedures by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to define quality objectives, and compares the monitoring data on pesticides in groundwater with their quality objectives. Section IV evaluates various strategies to control and prevent groundwater pollution problems. Different water treatment options are described from a technical and economic point of view. The main preventative actions include the chemical approach, the agronomic approach, and the land use approach. The final section reviews the state of the art of drinking water regulations in the EEC, the United States, and other OECD countries. The author describes the economic implications of groundwater pollution and its control and exemplifies with a real case study.

It contains a chapter making clear the limitations of classical fish inspection and quality control methods based solely on the analysis of final samples. A brief introduction about the relationship between the HACCP system and the ISO 9000 series is also included. The document is completed with chapters related to cleaning and sanitation and establishments for seafood processing, primarily seen from the HACCP point of view.
