Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental com munities over traces of toxic chemicals in foodstuHs and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published progress reports, and archival documentations. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclusively for the diversified literature on "toxic" chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surroundings, our domestic animals, our wild life, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to technical and other eyaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authorita tive publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation.
Book Synopsis Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures by : Michael D. Waters
Download or read book Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures written by Michael D. Waters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contained in this volume are the proceedings of the international conference on the "Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures," held from July 4-7, 1989, in Washington, DC. This meeting was a satellite of the "Fifth International Conference on Environmental Mutagens" and the seventh in a biennial series of conferences on "Short-term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures. " Our central objective in calling together key researchers from around the world was to extend our knowledge of the application of the methods of genetic toxicology and analytical chemistry in the evaluation of chemical mixtures as they exist in the environment. This conference emphasized the study of genotoxicants in air and water, and the assessment of human exposure and cancer risk. The latest strategies and methodologies for biomonitoring of genotoxicants (including transformation products) were described in the context of the ambient environment. Source character ization and source apportionment were discussed as an aid to understand ing the origin and relative contribution of various kinds of complex mix tures to the ambient environment. Similarly, investigations of genotoxi cants found in the indoor environment (sidestream cigarette smoke) and in drinking water (chlorohydroxyfuranones) were given special attention in terms of their potential health impacts. New molecular techniques were described to enable more precise quantitation of internal dose and dose to-target tissues. The emphasis of presentations on exposures/effects assessment was on integrated quantitative evaluation of human exposure and potential health effects.

Book Synopsis Environment, Chemistry, and metabolism by : Harry Gelboin
Download or read book Environment, Chemistry, and metabolism written by Harry Gelboin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic Hydrocarbons and Cancer, Volume 1: Environment, Chemistry, and Metabolism brings together information from many diverse disciplines in the environmental, chemical, biological, and medical sciences to provide a comprehensive account of the link between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cancer. This volume consists of 19 chapters divided into seven sections based on the following themes: Energy Sources; Environmental Occurrence and Monitoring; Tobacco Carcinogenesis; Chemistry, Carcinogenicity, and Theory; Metabolism and Activation; Enzymology; and Pharmacokinetics. The first three chapters focus on the energy sources, occurrence and surveillance, and environmental monitoring of PAHs. The discussion then turns to the link between smoking and cancer; the carcinogenicity of 5-methylchrysene; synthesis and reactions of diol epoxides and related metabolites of carcinogenic hydrocarbons; and enzymes of oxygenation. The final chapter is devoted to the pharmacokinetics of chemically reactive metabolites. This book will be of interest to investigators and educators concerned with scientific aspects of PAH research; government officials and elected representatives as well as industry leaders who must confront and solve the problems related to PAHs; and others in various fields such as chemistry, environmental science, biochemistry and enzymology, pharmacology, molecular and cell biology, and genetics.
