It was to know how to present intelligible and valuable ideas in a few columns on subjects so large that any one of them might well fill the pages of an entire book. Although the invitation of the editor of Science to make the attempt was accepted with some reluctance, I believe that, on the whole, a larger measure of success has been realized than was anticipated. The result is this each paper is suggestive. And it would be unfair to the writer to suppose that it was intended to be anything else. Yet each opens up a line of thought to those who read it; and this will in many in stances prove more fruitful because it has not been tried to treat any topic exhaustively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Economic Discussion The series of articles published in this brochure are the result of a conference, held in the spring of this year, with some of the leaders for the 'new school' of economists. There are now published all of the articles arranged for, with the exception of one by J. B. Clark on the 'Limits of competition, natural and artificial,' which the press of college duties did not allow Professor Clark to prepare. It was the intention that under each of the heads chosen by the new-school men three articles should appear: first, one stating the views of that school; second, a criticism from a member of the orthodox school; third, a rejoinder by the writer criticised. It will be seen that this plan did not meet with perfect success, as some of the critics chose to attack upon somewhat different ground from that chosen by the original contributors. This change of ground was so great in the case of the article by Arthur T. Hadley in reply to Henry C. Adams, that his article is considered to fairly express the views of the old school upon the points in the paper by Richmond M. Smith, and no other criticism of Professor Smith was sought. The first of the series, by Edwin R. A. Seligman, was considered to be historical, and met with no adverse comments from those consulted in regard to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Congress of Arts and Science, Vol. 13: Economics and Social Regulation The purpose of the deliberations of this Department will be to point out the present status of economic thought and to indicate the present trend of economic thinking. There is much evidence that economists are to-day coming to view political economy less as their predecessors of twenty-five and fifty years ago did, and to regard the science as it was conceived by Adam Smith. In Smith's classic work on the Wealth of Nations, the discussion and analysis of pro duction occupies the larger part of the volume. Smith was con cerned but little with the distribution of wealth, but endeavored to put in scientific form the principles of the production of wealth. Adam Smith and his successors for over a half-century studied production very largely to the exclusion of other phases of economics, because of the universal necessity for a greater amount of wealth. The intellectual and social progress during the latter part of the eighteenth and during the nineteenth century caused men to realize more clearly than ever before the necessity for more efficient pro duction in order to satisfy the expanding wants of various classes of society. With the industrial development of the nineteenth century and with the rapid accumulation of wealth, the ethical problems of distribution came to occupy the thought of social philosophers and turned the minds of economists toward ethical problems. The problems of distribution received almost exclusive attention for a score of years following 1880. In dealing with the theory of value and with the principles of the distribution of wealth, the most notable contributions were made by the Austrian and American economists, although J evons and other English writers contributed in no small measure to the theory of distribution. The American people may well be proud of the achievements of their countrymen in the develop ing of the theory of the distribution of wealth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Thought: The American Contribution The movement to reconstruct economics was well established 'in the United States long before 1929. By 1914 Thorstein Veblen had unfolded the major features of his evolutionary or cultural ver sion of economics. In the years before the outbreak of World War I, Veblen's disciples, who then included Wesley C. Mitchell, Robert F. Hoxie, Walton H. Hamilton, and other less well-known econo mists, were enthusiastic in their defense of the new economics, which came to be known as institutional economics. 2 Academic inter est in the new version of economics became so widespread by 1918 that one of the round table conferences of the annual meeting of the American Economic Association of that year was devoted to the topic of institutional economic theory.3 By 1921 Veblen's institu tional economics appears to have reached the high-level mark of its popularity. In the years of prosperity which followed the depres sion of 1920-21 the movement to reconstruct economics continued to add new members to its list of advocates, but'it didnot slavishly follow the lines drawn in earlier years by Thorstein Veblen. Younger exponents of economic heterodoxy, such as John M. Clark and Rexford G. Tugwell, brought new emphases to the work of re vamping economic thought. These new members of the group of economists who were interested in modernizing economic science were prone to be somewhat less speculative and more concerned with immediate economic and social issues than was Veblen. They were more willing to envision economic reform within the limits of the existing private-enterprise system. Furthermore, they began to find various parts of the Veblenian interpretation somewhat outmoded. This is not to say, however, that these younger revisionists of the postwar period had developed a basic approach to economic studies which was different from Veblen's approach.
