Book excerpt: An inspirational call for a return to the tenets of traditional architecture as a remedy for the dehumanizing standards of modern architecture • Explains how modern architecture is emblematic of our current estrangement from the spiritual principles that shaped humanity’s greatest civilizations • Reveals how the ancient laws of sacred proportion and harmony can be restored The ugly buildings that characterize the modern landscape are inferior not only to the great cathedrals of medieval Europe and the temples of ancient Egypt and Greece, but even to lesser buildings of the more recent past. The great masterworks of our ancestors spoke to humanity’s higher nature. Architect Herbert Bangs reveals how today’s dysfunctional buildings bring out the worst in humanity, reinforcing that which is most base within us. He shows how, through the ancient laws of proportion and number, architecture once expressed the harmonious relationship between man and the cosmos. In early times, the architect worked within a sacred and esoteric tradition of creating structures through which human beings could gain insight into the nature of the divine reality. Today, that tradition has been abandoned in favor of narrowly defined utilitarian principles of efficiency and economy. In The Return of Sacred Architecture, Bangs provides the key to freeing architecture from the crude functionality of the twentieth century: the architects of the modern human landscape must find the deep-felt connection to the cosmos that guided the inner lives of those who built the temples of the past. The form of their buildings will then reflect the sacred patterns of geometry and proportion and bring forth greater harmony in the world.

Book excerpt: The golden ratio is an irrational number and simultaneously an excellent technique that bestows a lot to those who are into the designing field. It helps in a number of things that are essential for the proper construction of architecture as well as designing. The golden ratio has a lot of names that are famous for the discrete tasks that can be performed by the golden ratio, and so accordingly it is named. The golden ratio was used by a number of distinguished mathematicians and artists who have also created some great masterpieces that are well known and famous worldwide. These masterpieces include the many architectural buildings, sculptures, images, paintings, designs, etc. The golden ratio is an amazing technique and probably the only technique that is present in a number of domains such as mathematics, physics, art, architecture, paintings, etc. The golden ratio is directly related to nature, which makes it more interesting and easygoing.

Book excerpt: Nataraja, the dancing Siva sculpture, is perhaps the most well-known among all Hindu sculptures, and rightly so. It has evoked highly advanced discussions among scientists, philosophers, performing artists, art critics, art collectors, historians, archaeologists and mythologists. The Nataraja sculpture also occupies a pride of a place at CERN, the European Centre for Research in Particle Physics in Geneva. Siva, according to Hindu Mythology, was the very first dancer in the world. All dramaturgy and dance traditions emerge from Siva’s cosmic dance. Tandu, Siva’s disciple narrated the description of Siva’s dance to Bharata Muni and he is believed to have compiled the Natyasastra, the world’s first treatise on dramaturgy, dance and other performing arts. Scholars believe that the Natyasastra was written over a long period of time between the 2nd century BCE and 2nd century CE with contributions from various sages, with its foundation having been laid by Bharata Muni. Convergence between Hindu mythology, Natyasastra and Silpasastra was the natural outcome. Karnataka, and its temple architecture tradition, played a pioneering role in giving an artistic form to this convergence in its temple sculptures. Though this trend may have started earlier during 2nd and 3rd century CE, it started to take the center stage from the times of the Badami Chalukyas. Passing through various refinements between 5th and 10th centuries, it reached its peak with the Hoysala art. This book traces the history of temple sculpture evolution and development through the centuries by referring to the existing sculptural forms and the canonical literature that developed over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A language of patterns seems to operate throughout the creative processes of both nature and humanity, from the geometry of a snowflake to the sonnets of Shakespeare to the architecture of the Japanese teahouse. The author's discovery, vividly illustrated here, is that certain proportions occur over and over again in all these forms. Patterns are also repeated in how things grow and are made - by the dynamic union of opposites - as demonstrated by the spirals that move in opposite directions in the growth of a plant. The award winning architect Gy rgy Doczi translates the language of patterns and shows how we, as humans, are included in the universal harmony of form, and suggests that the union of complementary opposites may be a way to extend that harmony to the psychological and social realms as well.

Book excerpt: " The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship and presence of sacred geometry, specifically the golden ratio concerning 20th-century residential architecture. Sacred Geometry has been evident since the dawn of time, naturally occurring in nature and then used in the art and architecture. Many of the great works of art and architecture can be attributed to the use of the Golden Ratio and ideal proportions. There are many fine examples of Sacred Geometry in the past, this study will examine if there are instances used in the 20th century to the present day. In architecture of the past and up until the modern era the concepts and ideals of the Golden ratio were discussed as a means of creating and implementing complicated structures with the inclusion of ideal proportions. The outcome when using ideal proportions is a beautiful, harmonious design that is aesthetically pleasing to the human eye. " -- Abstract

The main focus of such interest has been directed toward Tibetan maṇḍalas, specimens of which have been included in numerous publications. But maṇḍalas are found across a wide spectrum of South Asian religious traditions, including those of the Hindus and Jains. Hindu maṇḍalas and yantras have hardly been researched. This book attempts to fill this gap by clarifying important aspects of maṇḍalas and yantras in specific Hindu traditions through investigations by renowned specialists in the field. Its chapters explore maṇḍalas and yantras in the Smārta, Pāñcarātra, Śaiva and Śākta traditions. An essay on the vāstupuruṣamaṇḍala and its relationship to architecture is also included. With 13 colour plates.

Book excerpt: While we all study design in our grad schools, we come across a plethora of geometries to work with, in our Designs. Out of all those geometries, the least attention is paid to working in rectilinear forms as It is often considered easy to create visual interest in your work by using forms and shapes which are visually more Dynamic, for example, the curvilinear and the triangular ones.Straight lines are either considered too bland or too difficult to create beauty with. But Ironically they are also considered the most functional. And more often than not, when an Architect or Designer dives into the real world of practice, the straight lines are the most omnipresent and economical to construct geometry out there. Are straight lines as boring and bland, as they seem at the surface? Is it possible to create beauty and harmony just using straight lines, squares and rectangles? What is the Golden Section? Are there harmonious proportions other than the Golden Section? Why are these ratios considered beautiful?Let us find out answers to all these questions in this invigorating and enlightening journey.

Book excerpt: Integrate practical insights from modern physics, ancient Hermetic Laws, non-dual meta-physics, transpersonal psychology, and humor, as tools for undoing conflicting beliefs we've dreamed ourselves into. The seven Hermetic laws are explored in depth and demonstrate how a mindfulness that embraces 'other' as 'self' can reverse the typical misapplication of these inescapable laws of Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause & Effect and Generation. Ubiquitous geometric symbols, paired to each of these laws - the circle, vesica piscis, sine wave, line, spiral, fractal and yin-yang - and their countless commonplace variations, seen from the vantage point of shared interests, reflect these ideas. The inspired use of natural law restores attributes of life, love, strength, purity, beauty, perfection and gratitude to our awareness.
