Book excerpt: This book presents 25 selected papers from the International Conference on “Developing Synergies between Islam & Science and Technology for Mankind’s Benefit” held at the International Institute for Advanced Islamic Studies Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, in October 2014. The papers cover a broad range of issues reflecting the main conference themes: Cosmology and the Universe, Philosophy of Science and the Emergence of Biological Systems, Principles and Applications of Tawhidic Science, Medical Applications of Tawhidic Science and Bioethics, and the History and Teaching of Science from an Islamic Perspective. Highlighting the relationships between the Islamic religious worldview and the physical sciences, the book challenges secularist paradigms on the study of Science and Technology. Integrating metaphysical perspectives of Science, topics include Islamic approaches to S&T such as an Islamic epistemology of the philosophy of science, a new quantum theory, environmental care, avoiding wasteful consumption using Islamic teachings, and emotional-blasting psychological therapy. Eminent contributing scholars include Osman Bakar, Mohammad Hashim Kamali, Mehdi Golshani, Mohd. Kamal Hassan, Adi Setia and Malik Badri. The book is essential reading for a broad group of academics and practitioners, from Islamic scholars and social scientists to (physical) scientists and engineers.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. This text seeks to provide the necessary background for understanding the contemporary relationship between Islam and modern science. Presenting an authentic discourse on the Islamic understanding of the physical cosmos, Muzaffar Iqbal explores God's relationship to the created world and the historical and cultural forces that have shaped and defined Muslim attitudes towards science. What was Islamic in the Islamic scientific tradition? How was it rooted in the Qur'anic worldview and whatever happened to it? These are some of the facets of this account of a tradition that spans eight centuries and covers a vast geographical region. Written from within, this ground-breaking exploration of some of the most fundamental questions in the Islam and science discourse, explores the process of appropriation and transformation of the Islamic scientific tradition in Europe during the three centuries leading up to the Scientific revolution.

Book excerpt: Islamic Sciences: Ethics, Law, Education, Economics, Politics, Sociology, and Systems Planning. This book is an introduction to certain Islamic sciences (ideology): epistemology, education, jurisprudence, ethics and law, politics, economics, philosophy and history of science, and sociology of culture and development. These disciplines are applied in Islamic systems planning , particularly the engineering. The basic sources are the Quran which is used extensively, selected Traditions (Sunnah, Hadith) of Prophet Muhammad, the legacy of Islamic thought from the earliest to modern times, and contemporary rational ( aqaliyyah, or secularized) knowledge of the social and natural sciences and engineering. This is a modern pioneering work on the principles and methodology of Islamization of all knowledge, i.e., the Islamization of the contemporary ideological and technological cultures, through use of the above sources and modern ijtihad (Islamic expert opinion). This illustrates the Quranic principle of integration (tawhid), exemplified by Prophet Muhammad, through use of revelation (wahy) and reason ( aql), and imitation (taqlid) and good innovation (bid ah hasanah).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, physicists have uncovered a hidden order in nature; some have called it the Cosmic Code. Based on this order, scientists aim to uncover a grand unifying Theory of Everything (TOE). Once this order is decoded, it is envisioned by some that all fields of knowledge could be linked together based upon it. Using the work of experts in various fields, this book links testable scientific evidence in the Koran with modern discoveries that lead to a normative decoding of that order. The book is unique and has the potential to evoke great interest among scientists and lay people alike because of its non-traditional linking of science and religion. The work leading to the writing of this book, and the book itself can well be described as the "most important discovery" of the modern era. It also presents the Koran as a "falsifiable" scientific theory, which years of scientific inquiry have provided testable evidence for. It is a coherent presentation of the author's life work, a collection of over 15 years of research carried out by him. The author was nominated for the prestigious Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion .

The answers given to these qu- tions have deepened the already existing gap between philosophy and the history and practice of science. While the positivists argued for a spontaneous, steady and continuous growth of scientific knowledge the post-positivists make a strong case for a fundamental discontinuity in the development of science which can only be explained by extrascientific factors. The political, social and cultural environment, the argument goes on, determine both the questions and the terms in which they should be answered. Accordingly, the sociological and historical interpretation - volves in fact two kinds of discontinuity which are closely related: the discontinuity of science as such and the discontinuity of the more inclusive political and social context of its development. More precisely it explains the discontinuity of the former by the discontinuity of the latter subordinating in effect the history of science to the wider political and social history. The underlying idea is that each historical and - cial context generates scientific and philosophical questions of its own. From this point of view the question surrounding the nature of knowledge and its development are entirely new topics typical of the twentieth-century social context reflecting both the level and the scale of the development of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines all verses of the Quran involving knowledge related concepts. It begins with the argument that an analysis of the Quranic concept of ignorance points to epistemic virtues that can pave our way towards gaining knowledge and/or understanding. It deals with the Quranic concepts of perceptual, rational, and revelatory knowledge as well as understanding and wisdom in the light of recent discussions in Western analytic epistemology. It also argues that the relevant Quranic verses seem to involve concept of an epistemic conscience whose proper exercise can yield knowledge or understanding. While not overlooking the Quranic emphasis on revelation as a source of knowledge, the book draws our attention to a remarkable overlap between some strains of contemporary virtue epistemology and Quranic approach to knowledge. It shows that the Quranic verses suggest a progressive sequence from propositional knowledge to understanding to wisdom.

Book excerpt: The book is a program which seeks to construct an intellectual framework for Islamic methodology with a view to realizing practical training in the thoughtful investigation of issues related to knowledge in various fields. The book’s title affirms the distinctive types of integration that characterize Islamic methodology, including integration of sources, means, and schools of thought, as well as existing realities with desired ideals etc. This is fully consistent with human nature, as variety is fundamental to the functions people perform and skills they master. The work essentially makes the case that fundamental to any Muslim recovery is laying the foundations of sound thinking and values that integrate the two main sources of knowledge: Revelation and Reality (that is the created worlds both physical, societal and psychological) under the umbrella of Tawhid. This concept of integration implies using both human theoretical conceptualization and practical experimental investigation whilst also affirming the need to apply human capabilities in understanding the divine text, and acquiring sound knowledge of the physical world in terms of its resources, as well as accumulated past and present human experiences. The aim being to vitalize human potential and creativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses selected issues in the emerging field of science and religion, and at the same time acknowledges the situation of Indonesia (or, more generally, a "Third World" country) as the locus for this discussion. The book is concerned with how various world religions, in particular Islam and Christianity respond to shared challenges posed by science, as new theories in cosmology, physics, and the life sciences have brought challenges to many traditional religious ideas. There are also more generally epistemological challenges that reflect the recent success of natural science as a mode of inquiry. These are felt as problems in both the Western and non-Western worlds, but with an important difference. While the Western world is considered the "legitimate owner" of modern science, some in the Muslim world, and the Third World more generally, see modern science as a cultural alien imposed on them, due to its initial introduction in the colonial period.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Knowledge: An Islamic Perspective is a translation of the Persian book Mas’aleh-ye Shinakht by the great Muslim thinker and reformer, Ayatollah Murtada Mutahhari. Mutahhari authored this book as a rebuttal to a manifesto issued in the seventies by young Muslim activists who were deeply inuenced by Marxist theories. With ample citations from the Qur’an and other traditional Islamic texts, Mutahhari discusses the concept of knowing from an Islamic perspective. Mutahhari does not limit himself to the Islamic source texts and continuously engages with the views of a wide range of philosophers including Ghazali, Ibn Sina, Kant, and Hegel. Mutahhari’s epistemological discussion covers a range of issues, including whether it is possible to know, the nature of knowledge, stages of knowing, the unconscious mind, and truth. He also examines materialism and provides a spiritual approach to some of these questions about knowledge which are vital to the human experience.
