Book Synopsis Transcatheter Valve Repair by : Ziyad M. Hijazi
Download or read book Transcatheter Valve Repair written by Ziyad M. Hijazi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcatheter Valve Repair discusses all aspects related to percutaneous and established valve repair methods. The book is divided into few major sections covering all four valves and other topics. Each section contains several chapters discussing everything related to that valve. Beginning with the pulmonary valve, since it was the first valve to be tackled in the catheterization laboratory, and then moving to the aortic, then the mitral and then finally end with the tricuspid valve. 1.5M US citizens alone have some degree of aortic valve stenosis, with half (750K) requiring aortic valve replacement. Aortic valve replacement, on the whole, is performed by surgeons, requiring bypass machines and technicians, as well as the usual operating team. The operation is expensive and occupies a considerable amount of operating room time. Mostly, the aortic valve is calcified and the usual option available to patients is valve replacement with a variety of choices, ranging from porcine valves to synthetic, for which there are many manufacturers. It should be noted that the aortic valve is the most problematic of valves. Percutaneous procedures are the answer. The bottom line is that given the growing elderly population, many more patients will require valve repair, thus increasing health care costs with not only surgical operations but also hospitalisation. Percutanous valve repair, whilst requiring a cath lab team, does not involve bypass machines nor extended hospitalisation. Like percutaneous transluminal coronary artery interventions (PTCA) has replaced coronary artery bypass grafts (once the golden standard), and now stenting having replaced PTCA and its balloons. We now see drug eluting stents replacing ordinary stents (though at a much higher cost. There will be a huge movement toward percutanous valve repair, which should presumably cut costs but also morbidity and mortality.
Book Synopsis Coping with Negative Life Events by : C.R. Snyder
Download or read book Coping with Negative Life Events written by C.R. Snyder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like a Bridge over Troubled Waters" The surge of current interest in the interface between clinical and social psychology is well illustrated by the publication of a number of general texts and journals in this area, and the growing emphasis in graduate programs on providing training in both disciplines. Although the bene fits of an integrated clinical-social approach have been recognized for a number of years, the recent work in this area has advanced from the oretical extrapolations of social psychological models to clinical issues to theory and research that is based on social principles and conducted in clinical domains. It is becoming increasingly common to find social psy chologists pursuing research with clinical populations and clinical psy chologists investigating variables that have traditionally been in the realm of social psychology. A major area of interface between the two disciplines is in research and theory concerned with how individuals respond to negative events. In addition to the trend toward an integrated clinical-social approach, the growing body of literature in this area reflects the explosion of cur rent interest in the area of health psychology; work by clinical and social psychologists on the topics of stress and coping has been one of the major facets of this burgeoning field. The purpose of the present volume is to provide a common forum for recent advances in the clinical and social literature on responses to negative life outcomes.

Book Synopsis Confessions of the Shtetl by : Ellie R. Schainker
Download or read book Confessions of the Shtetl written by Ellie R. Schainker and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the nineteenth century, some 84,500 Jews in imperial Russia converted to Christianity. Confessions of the Shtetl explores the day-to-day world of these people, including the social, geographic, religious, and economic links among converts, Christians, and Jews. The book narrates converts' tales of love, desperation, and fear, tracing the uneasy contest between religious choice and collective Jewish identity in tsarist Russia. Rather than viewing the shtetl as the foundation myth for modern Jewish nationhood, this work reveals the shtetl's history of conversions and communal engagement with converts, which ultimately yielded a cultural hybridity that both challenged and fueled visions of Jewish separatism. Drawing on extensive research with conversion files in imperial Russian archives, in addition to the mass press, novels, and memoirs, Ellie R. Schainker offers a sociocultural history of religious toleration and Jewish life that sees baptism not as the fundamental departure from Jewishness or the Jewish community, but as a conversion that marked the start of a complicated experiment with new forms of identity and belonging. Ultimately, she argues that the Jewish encounter with imperial Russia did not revolve around coercion and ghettoization but was a genuinely religious drama with a diverse, attractive, and aggressive Christianity.
