In einem Beitrag zu einem Sammelband, der passenderweise "Schrumpfende Regionen - dynamische Hochschulen" betitelt wurde, haben Regionalökonomen diesen Zusammenhang analysiert und dabei die Situation im Osten besonders in den Blick genommen. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit liest sich ernüchternd. Die dort berechneten räumlichen Korrelationen zwischen der Bevölkerungs- und der Studierendenentwicklung lassen keinen positiven Zusammenhang erkennen. Allerdings lassen sich dagegen auch begründete Einwände erheben. Der Autor erhebt vier Einwände und plädiert damit im Ergebnis für das Gegenteil der Schlussfolgerung von Fritsch/Piontek.
