Book Synopsis Self and Society by : Steven Collins
Download or read book Self and Society written by Steven Collins and published by Silkworm Books. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of essays, originally published between 1988 and 2010, demonstrates that in the study of Buddhism a concern with detailed accuracy in philological and textual specifics can be combined with an attempt to deal with wider (and difficult) philosophical and sociological issues. The first part, Pali Literature, deals with the historical formation of the Pali Canon, with the continuing oral aspects of Pali texts, and, looking at the entire range of Pali texts, with the question “What is Literature in Pali?” The second part, The theory and Practice of Not-self, looks at the Buddhist denial of self as both a philosophical position and as a form of practice, one in which a process of self-transformative behavioral and psychological training is seen to culminate in the realization that there is no self underlying the ever-changing moments of experience. The third part, Buddhism and Society, has two essays reflecting on and extending Louis Dumont’s comparative theorizing about the individual and society in East and West, and a final contemporary treatment of Buddhist “nuns” (mae chi) in Thravāda Buddhism, both in general and specifcally as active in higher education in Bangkok. The three essays attempt to build on but go beyond the work of Dumont, and behind him Max Weber, in thinking about what they would call “world-renunciation” as a phenomenon of society and culture.
Book Synopsis Interpreting Japanese Society by : Joy Hendry
Download or read book Interpreting Japanese Society written by Joy Hendry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Interpreting Japanese Society became something of a classic in the field. In this newly revised and updated edition, the value of anthropological approaches to help understand an ancient and complex nation is clearly demonstrated. While living and working in Japan the contributors have studied important areas of society. Religion, ritual, leisure, family and social relations are covered as are Japanese preconceptions of time and space - often so different from Western concepts. This new edition of Interpreting Japanese Society shows what an important contribution research in such a rapidly changing industralised nation can make to the subject of anthropology. It will be welcomed by students and scholars alike who wish to find refreshing new insights on one of the world's most fascinating societies.

Book Synopsis Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 by : Julie G. Marshall
Download or read book Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 written by Julie G. Marshall and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a record of British relations with Tibet in the period 1765 to 1947. As such it also involves British relations with Russia and China, and with the Himalayan states of Ladakh, Lahul and Spiti, Kumaon and Garhwal, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam, in so far as British policy towards these states was affected by her desire to establish relations with Tibet. It also covers a subject of some importance in contemporary diplomacy. It was the legacy of unresolved problems concerning Tibet and its borders, bequeathed to India by Britain in 1947, which led to border disputes and ultimately to war between India and China in 1962. These borders are still in dispute today. It also provides background information to Tibet's claims to independence, an issue of current importance. The work is divided into a number of sections and subsections, based on chronology, geography and events. The introductions to each of the sections provide a condensed and informative history of the period and place the books and article in their historical context. Most entries are also annotated. This work is therefore both a history and a bibliography of the subject, and provides a rapid entry into a complex area for scholars in the fields of international relations and military history as well as Asian history.

Book Synopsis Norms and the State in China by : Chun-chieh Huang
Download or read book Norms and the State in China written by Chun-chieh Huang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this volume is the Chinese concept of chiao-hua, "Transformation by Instruction": the ancient idea that moral guidance in all spheres of life is one of the most essential tasks of leadership at all levels, from the central government down to local elites. Within this general perspective nineteen scholars of various disciplinary backgrounds have treated topics ranging from the regulation of conspicuous consumption in Ming times to ritualization of protest in recent times. In many cases a surprising degree of cultural continuity can be observed; on the other hand, due attention has also been paid to clashes between traditional Chinese (notably Confucian) norms and the demands of modernization in contemporary Chinese society.
