Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of the history of Bulgaria covers events in this important Balkan nation from its 9th-century origins in the first Bulgarian Empire through the present day. Now an Eastern European leader in the fields of science and technology, a nation with impressive renewable energy production capabilities and an extensive communication infrastructure, as well as a top exporter of minerals and metals, Bulgaria has grown both economically and politically over the past two decades. The History of Bulgaria examines the country's development, describing its cultural, political, and social history and development over 13 centuries. The modern era is particularly emphasized, including Bulgaria's role in World War II, the long tenure of Communist leader Todor Zhivkov, the role of Aleksandur Stamboliiski and the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, and the myriad changes in Bulgaria's post-Communist period. The author also highlights significant individuals in Bulgarian history, such as Dimitur Peshev, the Deputy Speaker whose actions saved 50,000 Jews from the Holocaust.

This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of minorities in Bulgaria presents a paradox. Although minority protection played a prominent role in the accession of the country to the European Union, hardly any positive minority rights were adopted in post-communist Bulgaria. Apart from the reversal of communist assimilation campaigns, only limited progress has been made in the area of minority protection. Positive minority rights have remained very restricted, some minorities, notably Pomaks and Macedonians, have been denied recognition, and the formal adoption of legislation or policy documents has often not been followed by implementation.By charting minority rights policies in Bulgaria in the period between 1989 and 2004, this study clarifies the main reasons for the limited progress in the post-communist period. While, in contrast to some other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, minority “kin-states” did not play a major role in post-communist Bulgaria, the European Union and the Council of Europe were instrumental in putting minority questions on the agenda of Bulgarian governments. However, their impact was smaller than much of the literature on enlargement and conditionality would suggest. Domestic factors were crucial in shaping minority rights policies in post-communist Bulgaria. Of particular importance was the communist legacy, which acted as a brake on the development of minority rights.

Book excerpt: *Winner, 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the Society of Professors of Education* *Winner, 2021 Book Award from the Globalization and Education SIG, Comparative and International Education Society* Examining Teach For All brings together research focused on Teach For All and its affiliate programmes to explore the organisation’s impact on education around the world. Teach For All is an expanding global network of programmes in more than 50 countries that aim to radically transform education systems by recruiting talented graduates to teach for two years in under-resourced schools and developing them into lifelong advocates of reform. The volume offers nuanced insights into the interests and contexts shaping Teach For All and the challenges and possibilities inherent in broader efforts to enact education reform on a global scale. This volume is the first of its kind to present empirical research on the emergence and expansion of Teach For All programmes, which replicate and adapt the Teach For America model around the world. The volume traces the network’s expansion from its initial launch in 2007 to its growing international presence, as chapters present new research from national contexts as diverse as Bangladesh, Lebanon, and Spain. Using evidence from a range of perspectives and research methodologies, the chapters collectively highlight the ways in which Teach For All and its affiliate programmes are working to alter educational landscapes worldwide. This book will be of great interest for scholars, educators, post-graduate students, and policymakers in the fields of comparative education, teacher education, education leadership, and education policy. It paves the way for future critical inquiry into this expanding global network as well as further investigations of educational change around the world.
