Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading. Its library is constantly growing but it has great need of more books. It wants a library building well filled with books to enrich the learning, culture, and, character of the state. More than books it wants students from all the counties who have learned to know well and thoroughly a few masterpieces of English and American literature; who have formed a habit of reading; who hunger and thirst after good books; who by dwelling with great authors and meditating upon their thoughts shall become a power in this commonwealth. A desire to aid in bringing about all these results prompted the prepara tion of this pamphlet; also a desire to cooperate with the State Board of Education and County and City Superintendents in the work they have been doing for many years. It was thought that it would be of interest and value to present books for grades accompanied by the names of one or two cities where they had been tested and approved. It was also thought that the names of authors, publishers, and prices would bring be fore the young teachers in the school districts, the boys and girls, and the homes, another source of information about books and added encourage ment to send for them for home and school libraries. It was also hoped that teachers well informed about books and publishers might often, in the crowd of work, find the information planned of immediate and practical value. With these hopes and desires in mind, something over three years ago the Department of Rhetoric and English Literature began to correspond with State Boards of Education, Superintendents of Instruction, Principals of High Schools, teachers of English in public schools, and librarians throughout our country, and also with publishers, about lists of books that had been found by experience to be well adapted to children of different grades and about libraries for grammar grades and high schools. Gener ous responses came from New York to San Francisco in letters of infor mation, lists compiled by the government, catalogues, courses of study, public school libraries, and township libraries. I have long thought that a brief manual connecting the various methods would not be without its uses to those who are concerned as parents, teachers, or librarians with the reading of the young, and as no one better qualified has undertaken the task, I have presumed to write this little work. In the earlier chapters I have dealt with matters which should be known by all who conduct libraries whether in the school or the home; and in these I have endeavoured to avoid the special phraseology of the professional librarian. The later chapters describe practically all the methods in use in public libraries for catering for children. The whole work, however, is connected, and the non-librarian may, and I hope will, find it worth while to read it as a whole. I had intended to prefix a chapter dealing with the history of the child's book; but when I came to marshal my materials, I found it was impossible to produce anything like a readable and satisfactory sketch within the limits I had proposed to myself.
