Book excerpt: As mental health needs increase, more adolescents are being hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals (Moses, 2011). Preyde, Parekh, Warne, and Heintzman (2017) found that students being interviewed about their transition were anxious about returning to school after a psychiatric hospital stay. There are many ways that schools can help students successfully transition back to school after a psychiatric hospital discharge. The purpose of this study was to study the transition students face when they return to school after they have been discharged from a psychiatric hospital. The participants in this study were middle school and high school regular education teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, and administrators in south central Pennsylvania. This study used survey and interview data to analyze this transition. There were 45 survey participants and five interview participants. It found that most of the students that return to school after a psychiatric hospitalization do not need to make up all of the work that they missed while they were hospitalized, and that students are not usually picked on by their peers when they return. The data showed anxiety is the biggest problem behavior that students have when they return to school after a psychiatric hospitalization. Frequent breaks and having an adult to talk to was found to be important. Flexibility was important among staff members. Communication is also important between the psychiatric hospital staff and the school staff, and communication between the support team at the school is needed in order for the transition to be successful.

Book excerpt: Children and adolescents transitioning from partial hospitalization programs-to-schools have both mental health and educational needs. As the leading mental health experts in schools, school psychologists are uniquely suited to address the needs of these students. However, their role in this transition process has yet to be explored. This study begins to fill the gap in the empirical literature by investigating the actual role and function of school psychologists in partial hospitalization program-to-school transitions, the perceived barriers to successful transitions, and the school psychologist characteristics that predict involvement in the transition process. In addition, school psychologists' perceptions of the sufficiency of their training and the effectiveness of their current transition procedures were explored. Seventy-one school psychologists practicing around the country who had at least one student on their caseload attend a partial hospitalization program during the previous two years participated in an anonymous, internet-based survey. Results indicate that school psychologists had high levels of involvement in partial hospitalization program-to-school transitions, most frequently engaging in activities related to special education services (i.e., IEP meetings, psychoeducational assessments) and consultation with teachers. School psychologists with smaller caseloads had significantly higher levels of involvement than those with larger caseloads. The strongest barrier to successful transitions was insufficient communication among schools and partial hospitalization programs. School psychologists who served on a team specifically designed to address the needs of students transitioning from a hospital-to-school setting perceived their procedures to be more effective than non-team members. Overall, school psychologists perceived their training to transition students from partial hospitalization programs-to-school to be moderately sufficient; however, they perceived their current procedures to be moderately ineffective. Recommendations to improve the effectiveness of partial hospitalization program-to-school transitions are provided.

Book excerpt: Substance use has the potential to impact a student's academic success; however, school counselors are in a position to intervene and provide support to these students to potentially mitigate the impact of the students' use. Research shows that school-based interventions are effective in reducing substance use, but school counselors may not feel clinically prepared to provide these services. A random sample of school counselors in the state of Virginia practicing at the middle and high school level completed a survey regarding their feelings and perceptions of substance use intervention and support, including their self-efficacy to provide services, level of training, and views of the need within their schools. The data were compared to results from research conducted by Dassira (2019) investigating substance use intervention and support of school psychologists practicing in Virginia. Data suggests that despite graduate training in substance use intervention, the majority of school counselors do not feel prepared to intervene with students. The majority of participants also see a need in their schools for increased services, and do believe providing interventions is in their role as a school counselor. The results support increasing substance use screening and intervention in schools, as well as promoting increased training and collaboration between school professionals.
