Book Synopsis Why Forests? Why Now? by : Frances Seymour
Download or read book Why Forests? Why Now? written by Frances Seymour and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical forests are an undervalued asset in meeting the greatest global challenges of our time—averting climate change and promoting development. Despite their importance, tropical forests and their ecosystems are being destroyed at a high and even increasing rate in most forest-rich countries. The good news is that the science, economics, and politics are aligned to support a major international effort over the next five years to reverse tropical deforestation. Why Forests? Why Now? synthesizes the latest evidence on the importance of tropical forests in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in climate change and development and to readers already familiar with the problem of deforestation. It makes the case to decisionmakers in rich countries that rewarding developing countries for protecting their forests is urgent, affordable, and achievable.
Book Synopsis Forest School For Grown-Ups by : Richard Irvine
Download or read book Forest School For Grown-Ups written by Richard Irvine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Schools need not be just for children. Here is the ultimate guide for how adults can enjoy the benefits of outdoor learning too. Have you always wanted to know how to start a campfire, forage for (the right) fungi, or know how to tie a good knot? Or would you like to expand your horizons – and lower your stress levels – by building a dry stone wall, fashioning a bow and arrow, or beachcombing for shells? Forest schools for kids originated in Scandinavia as outdoor, play-based learning groups and, as the benefits of nature play became internationally recognised, quickly became established around the world. But why should kids have all the fun? Connecting with green spaces, trees and plants can lift our spirits, improve stress and relax our brains – in short, playing outside is good for everyone. Forest School for Grown Ups shows you can learn new skills and practise forgotten ones from finding your way in the woods to whittling utensils and carving sculptures; from trapping and smoking game to making and using a divining rod, from building a bird box, or insect house, to simply just climbing trees. Beautifully designed and illustrated, Forest School for Grown Ups provides the perfect resource for anyone wanting to enjoy spending quality time outdoors.

Download or read book Forests Adrift written by Charles D. Canham and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating analysis of the past, present, and future of northeastern forests and the forces that have shaped them The northeastern United States is one of the most densely forested regions in the country, yet its history of growth, destruction, and renewal are for the most part poorly understood--even by specialists. In this engaging look at both the impermanence and the resilience of the northeastern forest ecosystems, Charles D. Canham provides a synthesis of modern ecological research and explores critical threats that include logging, fire suppression, disease, air pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Providing a historical perspective on how northeastern forests have changed since the arrival of European settlers, Canham also utilizes new theoretical models to predict how these ecosystems will change and adapt to an uncertain future. This is an informed and accessible investigation of an endangered natural landscape that examines the ramifications of the scientific controversies and ethical dilemmas shaping the future of northeastern forests.

Book Synopsis Forest Plans of North America by : Jacek P. Siry
Download or read book Forest Plans of North America written by Jacek P. Siry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plans of North America presents case studies of contemporary forest management plans developed for forests owned by federal, state, county, and municipal governments, communities, families, individuals, industry, investment organizations, conservation organizations, and others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book provides excellent real-life examples of contemporary forest planning processes, the various methods used, and the diversity of objectives and constraints faced by forest owners. Chapters are written by those who have developed the plans, with each contribution following a unified format and allowing a common, clear presentation of the material, along with consistent treatment of various aspects of the plans. This work complements other books published by members of the same editorial team (Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resource Management), which describe the planning process and the various methods one might use to develop a plan, but in general do not, as this work does, illustrate what has specifically been developed by landowners and land managers. This is an in-depth compilation of case studies on the development of forest management plans by the different landowner groups in North America. The book offers students, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public an opportunity to greatly improve their appreciation of forest management and, more importantly, foster an understanding of why our forests today are what they are and what forces and tools may shape their tomorrow. Forest Plans of North America provides a solid supplement to those texts that are used as learning tools for forest management courses. In addition, the work functions as a reference for the types of processes used and issues addressed in the early 21st century for managing land resources. Presents 40-50 case studies of forest plans developed for a wide variety of organizations, groups, and landowners in North America Illustrates plans that have specifically been developed by landowners and land managers Features engaging, clearly written content that is accessible rather than highly technical, while demonstrating the issues and methods involved in the development of the plans Each chapter contains color photographs, maps, and figures
Book Synopsis Utilization of School Forests in Minnesota by : Sharon L. Krause
Download or read book Utilization of School Forests in Minnesota written by Sharon L. Krause and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple learning theories suggest outdoor education and environmental education are effective teaching tools for a variety of learners. They have been found to be especially effective when students are given the opportunity to do experiential work in an outdoor setting, strengthening students' overall knowledge and critical thinking skills. One resource for outdoor and environmental education is a school forest. Using schools which participate in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources School Forests Program, this study used survey research to investigate the use and rationale for using school forests by elementary teachers. This study identified positive motivational factors as well as barriers which make it difficult for teachers to utilize school forests more often. The results indicate school forests are underutilized and also offer some suggestions for ways to alleviate the barriers that keep teachers from using them more often.
