The participants were teachers of the core academic areas, encore subject teachers, counselors, and administrators at both the elementary and middle school levels. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 48 fifth grade teachers from ten elementary schools, 62 sixth grade teachers from two middle schools, and nine administrators from both elementary and middle schools who completed an online instrument - Perceptions of Transition Survey (POTS). The teacher and administrator POTS survey contained phrases that measured the extent to which they believe students will look forward to, may be worried about, and open-ended questions designed to obtain further teacher and administrator insight regarding the transition to middle school. Results of the study indicated all three groups (5th grade teachers, 6th grade teachers, and administrators) identified student social and academic issues as the defining characteristics of middle school transition. Identifying the consistent and inconsistent messages of school staff members across elementary and middle school buildings may guide future research as school districts strive to provide students with a successful foundation form middle school transitions.

Fifty-seven elementary and middle school personnel participated in the study. Individual interviews with 12 participants provided additional insight of their personal perceptions. Results of the study indicated that principals, teachers, and counselors believed that planning, offering, and implementing transition activities are necessary to effect a smooth transition from elementary to middle school. The data revealed that participants believed middle school principals and middle school counselors should have primary responsiblity for planning transition activities. The data also indicated that participants agreed that the overall responsiblity to offer and facilitate transition activities belonged to both the elementary and middle schools. The research findings also suggested that when there is collaboration, communication and shared responsibility between elementary and middle schools, students are better prepared for a smooth transition to their new environment both academically and socially.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine elementary and middle school teacher and administrator perceptions of variables that impact student transition from elementary school to middle school and to examine elementary and middle school teacher perspectives of student emotional readiness for middle school. A total of 30 educational professional staff, 26 teachers and four administrators, from two semi-rural public school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania completed surveys containing Likert scale questions. Two teachers and two administrators participated in the interview portion of the study to further explore their perceptions about student transition into middle school. The results of this study affirmed the importance of a cohesive transition program for students. The findings of this research identified a majority consistency of 70% between the perspectives of teachers and the perspectives of administrators regarding variables that impact student transition to middle school. Teachers were evenly divided on whether their students were academically prepared for middle school, although, the majority of teachers did not feel their students were behaviorally ready for middle school. Findings identified significant gaps in current transition activities. Response data supported transition activities were void of current crucial social issues facing today's youth. These findings can guide future research for school districts to create comprehensive transition plans to ensure students are given the greatest opportunity for success.

Data indicated that the WEB transition program was successful in reducing the transition anxieties of students as they entered the middle school. Though the WEB transition program is facilitated at the middle school level, the elementary administrators and teachers wanted more information about WEB in order to assist with the transition of the elementary students to the middle school.

Finally, teachers who had taught both groups of students were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the attainment of academic competencies related to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards for School Counseling Programs of the group of students who looped with their school counselor from middle school to high school as compared with a group of students who changed school counselors in high school.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of practicing high-school educators and administrators pertaining to the challenges associated with transition and the factors considered to be most effective in the transition process. Perceptual data were collected from 30 teachers and administrators working across five central Pennsylvania school districts through an online survey and in-depth interviews. An analysis was performed to determine notable similarities and differences across participants' perceptions. This study revealed that both teachers and administrators had similar perceptions in terms of effective transition practices, citing 16 specific areas of transition as having some level of importance. Respondents most strongly agreed that the availability of the high-school transition program would have greatest potential to impact the transition process. Furthermore, professionals taking part in the study indicated that (a) difficulty securing community-based work assignments, (b) educating parents, (c) accessing transportation, (d) competition from other schools, (e) difficulty designing programming and postsecondary goals for students with the most significant disabilities, and (f) access to appropriate coursework, were amongst the greatest challenges or barriers to the transition process.

This study included an introduction and a review of literature that discussed the following: adolescent years, transition from 8th to 9th grade, drop-out prevention, school reform in secondary education, professional learning communities, the freshman academy, and a conclusion. This study was also comprised with a methodology section, research results, conclusions, recommendations for policy makers and practitioners, and recommendations for future research. The questionnaire for this study was developed by the researcher. The questionnaire focused on the areas of demographics, academics, attendance, discipline, school culture, transitioning, socio-economic status, and instructional staff. Data was collected from seven different schools in Mississippi who currently house freshman academies, school-within-schools, and ninth grade schools. A total of 85 questionnaires were completed with 10 of those being administrators, 12 being counselors, and 63 comprised of teachers. This study specifically examined administrators', counselors', and teachers' opinions regarding the impact freshman academies, schools-within-schools, and ninth grade schools as it relates to effective transitioning. Results illustrated that there was a significant difference in the opinions of administrators, counselors, and teachers in the areas of academic performance, reduced discipline referrals, school culture, transitioning from eighth to ninth grade, and the morale on the staff of the school. However, this study yielded a non-significant relationship among the opinions of administrators, counselors, and teachers concerning the implementation of a freshmen academy on the drop-out rate and improving students from a low socio-economic class. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the need for an academic transition program at the beginning of the high school experience for 90 to 100 critical - need ninth grade students at North Thurston High School in Lacey, Washington. Opinions of ninth and twelfth grade high school students with a high grade point average and those with a low grade point average were measured to determine the justification for such a program. In order to determine whether or not there were differences of opinions it was necessary to pinpoint the differences between the two groups. A thirty - one item survey utilizing a Likert type scale was developed to assess the opinions of both groups of students. The Likert type scale was chosen because it would be more adequate for the measurement of degrees of opinion concerning topics or issues to be presented to the high school students sampled-in the study. The thirty - one item survey was administered to a ninth grade population of approximately four hundred and twenty-five students and a twelfth grade population of approximately three hundred and fifty students at North Thurston High School. T-scores on the two groups were used to determine if significance existed between the means of the two groups. Factors analysis was then selected to cluster survey items resulting in the formation of ten factors. The utilization of a two by two ANOVA design then determined that significant difference existed in three of the ten factors. On the basis of the data collected it can be concluded that the hypothesis cannot be rejected. The study requires the necessity of an academic entry program for critical - need ninth grade students. The evidence suggests that the middle level block program approach of teachers, administrators, and support staff might be the most appropriate curriculum arrangement. Furthermore, such a curriculum arrangement with need to give attention to the various ways of knowing teenagers and seriously engaging them in school studies, be less restricted /dominated by the textbook, become less fragmented into separated subjects include a study skills program oriented to the unique needs of the critical - need ninth grade students, enlist the involvement of teachers who enjoy teaching ninth graders, and institute an advisor - advisee program in which teachers will fulfill multiple obligations (teacher - counselor - advisor - manager). It can be concluded that critical - need ninth grade students would benefit from such an creative alternative to present high school curriculum organization and insturction.

Quantitative data were collected using student outcome data based on GPA, attendance rates, number of discipline referrals, pass rates on Virginia Standards of Learning End of Course tests, and credits earned. Qualitative data were collected based on teacher, school counselor, and administrator interviews. Successes and challenges of the program as well as areas of recommended improvement are detailed in this study. Analysis of student outcome data revealed that students participating in the program are consistently meeting the benchmark intended outcomes for attendance, discipline, and credits earned and most students are passing the Algebra I and World Geography SOLs during the last year included in this study. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the program elements can only assist teams in providing stronger transition programs to help students achieve the intended outcomes. Recommendations for future research and program improvement include collaboration between the Freshman Academy teachers and administrators with the eighth grade teachers and administrators at the feeder middle schools, developing a summer bridge program to target at-risk students, and increasing parental involvement and seeking their feedback on the Freshman Academy.

Book excerpt: Research has revealed important information about how to create a smoother, more successful transition for students from middle school to high school, yet many schools still have not implemented programs to help students during this important time. This project explores the recent history of other transition programs and previous data collected on this topic that have been shown to be successful for students during their first year in high school. An effective school transition program must acknowledge the specific needs from students in eighth and ninth grade, which include understanding a new building, more responsibility to complete schoolwork independently, and the different teaching methods of high school teachers. This transitional program addresses the needs of students moving from middle school to high school as well as improves student-counselor relationships early on. Additionally, a pre-post test will be administered to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and allow school counselors to adjust the program as needed. This program hopes to increase academic achievement, especially for students during the first year of high school.
