Book excerpt: Hardbound. This collection of original research papers is dedicated to the analysis and solution of vehicle routing problems. Vehicle routing is a branch of operations research that has attracted a great deal of research attention over the years. The accumulated body of knowledge has resulted in algorithms and insights that have enabled companies and organizations in both the public and private sectors to save from 5% to 10% on distribution related costs. The volume brings together, in a comprehensive way, the theory and practice of vehicle routing in book form for the first time.

Book excerpt: This report will be of interest to managers of public transportation and school bus systems, transportation planning and operations professionals, policy makers, and others interested in the potential for coordinating or integrating school bus and public transportation services in non-urban areas. The report identifies and discusses issues associated with such coordination or integration, and provides 13 case studies of communities that have successfully coordinated or integrated some aspect of school and public transportation services. The report also provides an implementation guide that suggests "next steps" for non-urban communities seeking to give serious consideration to the coordination or integration of school and public transportation services.

The problem is defined as a multi-stage process where the stops are generated, the students are assigned to these, and the bus routes are then generated. Several suited versions of vehicle routing techniques are analysed and compared and branch exchange procedures to improve the solutions are studied.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was prompted by the fact that on Virginia's rural interstate highways there is a three-tiered speed limit: 45 mph for school buses, 55 mph for other buses and trucks, and 65 mph for passenger vehicles. On the urban interstate system, school buses are restricted to 45 mph, but other traffic has a 55 mph speed limit. Further, the speed limit for school buses on roads other than interstate highways is 35 mph or the minimum speed limit, whichever is greater, or 45 mph if the school bus neither loads nor discharges passengers between the points of origin and destination. The study will examine the safety characteristics of the current multi-tiered speed limits and how these characteristics relate to the operation of school buses. A survey of other states revealed that 17 states other than Virginia had statutes creating speed limits for school buses lower than those for other vehicles. Generally, these states restricted the speeds of school buses to 55 mph. Three other states have administrative regulations that restrict school buses to 55 mph. However, 19 states have no special laws or regulations governing school bus speed limits. Data acquisition is still in progress for the remaining states. Research is continuing on this project, and a final report on the subject is scheduled to be completed in September 1989.

Book excerpt: Geocomputation with R is for people who want to analyze, visualize and model geographic data with open source software. It is based on R, a statistical programming language that has powerful data processing, visualization, and geospatial capabilities. The book equips you with the knowledge and skills to tackle a wide range of issues manifested in geographic data, including those with scientific, societal, and environmental implications. This book will interest people from many backgrounds, especially Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users interested in applying their domain-specific knowledge in a powerful open source language for data science, and R users interested in extending their skills to handle spatial data. The book is divided into three parts: (I) Foundations, aimed at getting you up-to-speed with geographic data in R, (II) extensions, which covers advanced techniques, and (III) applications to real-world problems. The chapters cover progressively more advanced topics, with early chapters providing strong foundations on which the later chapters build. Part I describes the nature of spatial datasets in R and methods for manipulating them. It also covers geographic data import/export and transforming coordinate reference systems. Part II represents methods that build on these foundations. It covers advanced map making (including web mapping), "bridges" to GIS, sharing reproducible code, and how to do cross-validation in the presence of spatial autocorrelation. Part III applies the knowledge gained to tackle real-world problems, including representing and modeling transport systems, finding optimal locations for stores or services, and ecological modeling. Exercises at the end of each chapter give you the skills needed to tackle a range of geospatial problems. Solutions for each chapter and supplementary materials providing extended examples are available at https://geocompr.github.io/geocompkg/articles/. Dr. Robin Lovelace is a University Academic Fellow at the University of Leeds, where he has taught R for geographic research over many years, with a focus on transport systems. Dr. Jakub Nowosad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geoinformation at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, where his focus is on the analysis of large datasets to understand environmental processes. Dr. Jannes Muenchow is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the GIScience Department at the University of Jena, where he develops and teaches a range of geographic methods, with a focus on ecological modeling, statistical geocomputing, and predictive mapping. All three are active developers and work on a number of R packages, including stplanr, sabre, and RQGIS.
