Die KiGGS-Studie hat ergeben, dass insgesamt ein Fünftel der Kinder und Jugendlichen zwischen 3 und 17 Jahren psychische Auffälligkeiten aufweisen und bei etwa 7% eine klinische Behandlungsbedürftigkeit besteht. Die Verantwortung für das gesunde Aufwachsen von Kindern und Jugendlichen liegt nicht mehr unmittelbar nur in der Verantwortung ihrer Eltern, sondern wird immer weiter in den öffentlichen Bereich übertragen. Junge Menschen mit einer psychischen Störung weisen einen komplexen Hilfebedarf auf und vor allem die Jugendhilfe und die Jugendpsychiatrie übernehmen eine wichtige Rolle, bei der Versorgung dieser Kinder und Jugendlichen. Dadurch sind in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten in beiden Systemen nicht nur die Fallzahlen, sondern auch die Kooperationsanforderungen, Erwartungshaltungen und Aufgabenstellungen gewachsen. Trotz eines gemeinsamen Auftrages, gelingt die Kooperation zwischen Jugendhilfe und Jugendpsychiatrie nicht immer reibungslos. Durch verbindliche Kooperationsleitfäden zwischen den Systemen, könnten Konflikte bei der interdisziplinären Kooperation verhindert und die Versorgungssituation von psychisch gestörten jungen Menschen verbessert werden. Dafür ist es wichtig die Stolpersteine der Kooperation zu erkennen und aus dem Weg zu räumen. Charakteristisch für den Aufgabenbereich der Sozialarbeiterinnen und Sozialarbeiter in allen Arbeitsfeldern ist, dass die überwiegend im direkten Kontakt mit den jungen Menschen und ihren Familien stehen, mit unterschiedlichen Berufsdisziplinen zusammenarbeiten und oft an Schnittstellen der Versorgung eingesetzt werden, womit sie als Bindeglied zwischen den unterschiedlichen Versorgungssystemen fungieren. Die Versorgung von psychisch gestörten Kindern und Jugendlichen ist demnach eine wichtige Aufgabe der Sozialen Arbeit, an der Schnittstelle zwischen Jugendhilfe und Jugendpsychiatrie. Die fachliche Kompetenz der Sozialarbeiterinnen und Sozialarbeiter sollte dazu genutzt werden, die interdisziplinäre Kooperation zwischen Jugendhilfe und Jugendpsychiatrie voranzutreiben.

In many decades of work, researchers have continually identified three central dimensions of parenting: support, behavioral control, and psychological control, all of which have been associated consistently with either positive or negative indicators of adolescent functioning. Notwithstanding its volume, the research has been non specific as to the effects of these dimensions and has otherwise been limited by a predominant concentration on western families. This monograph reported on research that addressed these limitations by testing specific effects of the parenting dimensions and by doing with multiple analytic techniques on data from adolescents in 11 cultures across the world. In al sites, it was found that support was associated with higher adolescent social competence and lower depression; psychological control with higher depression and antisocial behavior; and behavioral control with lower antisocial behavior. Recommendations included considering that these dimensions are the parental contribution to relationship types or socialization conditions that, when achieved, (with parents or other significant person) are responsible for the effects.
