Download or read book Making Marvels written by Wolfram Koeppe and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring more than 150 treasures from several of the world’s most prestigious collections, Making Marvels explores the vital intersection of art, technology, and political power at the courts of early modern Europe. It was there, from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, that a remarkable outpouring of creativity and learning gave rise to exquisite objects that were at once beautiful works of art and technological wonders. By amassing vast, glittering collections of these ingeniously crafted objects, princes flaunted their wealth and competed for mastery over the known world. More than mere status symbols, however, many of these marvels ushered in significant advancements that have had a lasting influence on astronomy, engineering, and even international politics. Incisive texts by leading scholars situate these works within the rich, complex symbolism of life at court, where science and splendor were pursued with equal vigor and together contributed to a culture of magnificence.
Book Synopsis The Scribes For Women's Convents in Late Medieval Germany by : Cynthia J. Cyrus
Download or read book The Scribes For Women's Convents in Late Medieval Germany written by Cynthia J. Cyrus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-05-23 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been a great tradition of scholarship in medieval manuscripts, most studies have focused on the details of manuscript production by male copyists. In this study, Cynthia J. Cyrus demonstrates the prevalence of manuscript production by women monastics and challenges current assumptions of how manuscripts circulated in the late medieval period. Drawing on extensive research into the surviving manuscripts of over 450 women's convents, the author assesses the genres common to women's convent libraries emphasizing a social rather than a codicological understanding of how manuscripts of women's libraries came to be copied. An engaging mix of biography, women's history, and book history, The Scribes for Women's Convents in Late Medieval Germany will change the way medieval manuscripts are understood and studied.
Download or read book In Miniature written by Simon Garfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling, award-winning writer Simon Garfield returns with an enthralling investigation of humans’ peculiar fascination with small things—and what small things tell us about our larger world. “[Simon Garfield is] an exuberant truffle-hound of the recondite and delightful factoid.” —Sunday Times (London) Simon Garfield writes books that shine a light on aspects of the everyday world in order to reveal the charms and eccentricities hiding in plain sight around us. After beguiling fans with books about everything from typography to time, from historic maps to the color mauve, he’s found his most delightful topic yet: miniatures. Tiny Eiffel Towers. Platoons of brave toy soldiers. A doll’s house created for a Queen. Diminutive crime scenes crafted to catch a killer. Model villages and miniscule railways. These are just a few of the objects you will discover in the pages of In Miniature. Bringing together history, psychology, art, and obsession, Garfield explores what fuels the strong appeal of miniature objects among collectors, modelers, and fans. The toys we enjoy as children invest us with a rare power at a young age, conferring on us a taste of adult-sized authority. For some, the desire to play with small things becomes a desire to make small things. We live in a vast and uncertain world, and controlling just a tiny, scaled-down part of it restores our sense of order and worth. As it explores flea circuses, microscopic food, ancient tombs, and the Vegas Strip, In Miniature changes the way we perceive our surroundings, encouraging all of us to find greatness in the smallest of things.

Book Synopsis Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature by : Begüm Özden Firat
Download or read book Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature written by Begüm Özden Firat and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant form of Ottoman pictorial art until the eighteenth century, miniatures have traditionally been studied as reflecting the socio-historical contexts, aesthetic concerns and artistic tastes of the era within which they were produced. Begum Ozden Fyrat proposes instead a radical re-reading of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century miniatures in the light of contemporary critical theory, highlighting the viewer's encounter with the image. Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature employs contemporary concepts such as the gaze, frame/framing, reading and re-reading, drawing on thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Gilles Deleuze to establish the vibrant cultural agency of miniature paintings. With analysis that illuminates both the social and political situations in which these miniatures were painted as well as emphasising the miniature's contemporary relevance, Firat presents an important new re-imagining of this art form.

Book Synopsis Tribology of Miniature Systems by : Z. Rymuza
Download or read book Tribology of Miniature Systems written by Z. Rymuza and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribology of miniature systems is quite different from the tribology of large machinery. This is the first publication to cover on an academic level both the basic concepts of the tribology of miniature systems and some areas of its practical application. A comprehensive survey is given on the specific problems encountered in this field, providing a volume that will be useful in solving professional engineering problems in the fast growing field of precision engineering and microtechnology. The suitability of various materials and lubricants for the tribological systems in miniature mechanisms is discussed. The tribological properties and the friction and wear properties which occur in such systems are analysed. Specific lubrication problems are examined in detail; in particular, the use of special tribological coatings to solve many difficult lubrication problems and to obtain high wear resistance of the rubbing elements is considered. The special investigation techniques used to characterize miniature tribological systems and their elements (e.g. lubricants) are reviewed. The tribological aspects of many of the most common assemblies found in miniature mechanism and electromechanism design are analysed and some practical suggestions are put forward for the rational design of such systems. Also special tribological problems such as those met in computer technology, bioengineering, etc. are presented. The book is intended for tribologists (both seasoned researchers and newcomers) studying the problems of this specific branch of tribology and also for practising engineers active in the design, manufacture and exploitation of various miniature systems.
Download or read book Soul Trip written by Amy Russell and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soul Trip is a compilation of poetry and blogs, interwoven with story, about waking-up. Soul Trip is the first in a series of three books that document the intensity of emotion, thought, and questioning that occurs when the perception of life begins to drastically change. Soul Trip accounts deep extremes of sorrow and pain, and seeing such emotions as the true catalysts for living an authentic life that lead to finding ones Bliss. Soul Trip shares this experience through looking at love and heartbreak differently, finding who you are as you analyze who you were, and seeking fullness in the expression of ones heart. Soul Trip poetically illustrates the pain, rejection, disappointment, sorrow, and misunderstanding that leads to the love inside oneself so we can experience just who we are, in an unknown, yet whole, way. In awakening, letting go of what you really think love is, trusting whatever comes your way, and finding beauty in the intensity and sorrow of life because these are leading you to you, is the purpose of Soul Trip. Soul Trip takes you there in all that murky and ecstatic passion and depth. Soul Trip is waking-up.
