Book excerpt: The Scherana is trained to think first in the interests of the Esoteric Order, but the love of an orphan will awaken in her the desire to be a mother, and to free herself from the control of the Masonic Congregation. Her hopes for an ordinary life are threatened by events thatshake the streets of Paris, as well as the lives of the Grand Masters of this Order. Forced to make a painful choice, she takes on the most dangerous mission of her life, knowing that she may never find redemption. Things seem to be governed by an ancestral force leading her to discover her origins while salvaging her emotions . As Paris celebrates the approach of New Year's Eve, it is rattled by a series of barbaric murders. The Esoteric Order has been struck with brutal force, and its arcane foundations, which date back to the time of Solomon, are about to crumble under the blows of centuries-old enemies. A police investigation gets more complicated, with a trail of suspicious deaths making the city inhospitable to tourists. Commissioner Moreau seems to be in the dark. Behind the trafficking of archaeological artifacts are the unsuspected Counts of Gaillard, in search of the legendary scrolls of the Esoteric Order, which, according to ancient tradition, hide a secret of primordial importance. The Gaillards, aided by the criminal gang led by the Decker brothers, appear to have everything under control. But a mysterious force emerges from the shadows of the city that will illuminate the darkness and disrupt the lives of those involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the Tondo Doni to the new Florentine republic as a model of the 'great sacrament' of marriage from the New Testament book of Ephesians. Following fifteenth-century theology, Michelangelo portrayed Mary as a humble wife dominated and possessed by a virile guardian Joseph, the couple united as if ‘two in one flesh’. To compensate for their symbolic propinquity, the painter cast her as a paragon of virginity, a muscular mulier fortis. In order to keep this virago in her place, Michelangelo coupled the Virgin in spiritual union with Christ, maenad-Psyche to bacchic Eros, attempting to mystify her social subordination into self-sacrificing love via Ficinian commentary and Saint Paul. Then, firing the Doni infant’s vehemence with a distinctly violent strain of Christian love, the painter turned to Dante’s rime petrose to continue the implied action and authorize a new painterly style, a sculptural stile aspro. Book excerpt: This collection of Dante Alighieri's lyrics charts his poetic evolution and displays the ground on which his Vita nuova and Divine Comedy developed. Inspired in his early poems by troubadour love poetry, Dante would later come to master all the genres of the time, such as the canzone, the sonnet and the ballad. At the same time deeply personal - dealing with themes of love, death and exile - and imbued with the poetic and political milieux of the period, Dante's Rime offer a fascinating glimpse into the imagination of arguably the greatest writer of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rime petrose, Dante's powerful lyrics about a woman as beautiful and as hard as a precious stone, are generally acknowledged to be an important moment in his stylistic development. In this full-length investigation of the poetics of the petrose and of their relation to TheDivine Comedy, Robert M. Durling and Ronald L. Martinez uncover new material, especially from medieval science (astrology and mineralogy), philosophy, and theology. The authors argue that the Rime petrose represent a major turning point in Dante's conception of a "microcosmic poetics" that became the fundamental mode of the Commedia. They demonstrate how Dante here attempts his first full account of his relation to the universe as a whole. This work offers many insights into the intrinsic significance of these remarkable poems and their place in Dante's development. Especially far-reaching are the implications for the interpretation of TheDivine Comedy.Time and the Crystal will interest not only students of Dante but also intellectual historians, historians of science, students of poetics and poetic theory, and all those interested in medieval literature. Book excerpt: ‘Anticlassicisms,’ as a plural, react to the many possible forms of ‘classicisms.’ In the sixteenth century, classicist tendencies range from humanist traditions focusing on Horace and the teachings of rhetoric, via Pietro Bembo’s canonization of a ‘second antiquity’ in the works of the fourteenth-century classics, Petrarch and Boccaccio, to the Aristotelianism of the second half of the century. Correspondingly, the various tendencies to destabilize or to subvert or contradict these manifold and historically dynamic ‘classicisms’ need to be distinguished as so many ‘anticlassicisms’. This volume, after discussing the history and possible implications of the label ‘anticlassicism’ in Renaissance studies, differentiates and analyzes these ‘anticlassicisms.’ It distinguishes the various forms of opposition to ‘classicisms’ as to their scope (on a scale between radical poetological dissension to merely sectorial opposition in a given literary genre) and to their alternative models, be they authors (like Dante) or texts. At the same time, the various chapters specify the degree of difference or erosion inherent in anticlassicist tendencies with respect to their ‘classicist’ counterparts, ranging from implicit ‘system disturbances’ to open, intended antagonism (as in Bernesque poetry), with a view to establishing an overall picture of this field of phenomena for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very close and clear description of Dante's style in those lyric poems, which can be dated with reasonable confidence. Dr Boyde explains the nature and objective of his analyses in the substantial introduction which does not assume any previous knowledge of the poems or of modern stylistic theory. He has three principal aims: first, to relate the style of the poems to medieval rhetorical teaching; secondly, to assess the degree of Dante's stylistic originality by comparison with the style of earlier medieval authors; and thirdly, to provide an accurate detailed description of the many developments in Dante's style over a period of twenty years. Close attention is paid throughout to the frequency and distribution of the features described, and there is abundant quotation of examples. The book will have a considerable theoretical interest to all those concerned with the analysis of the style of literature from the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive new reading of Petrarch's lyric collection known as the Canzoniere or Rime sparse, the work that stands at the origins of the dominant tradition of European Renaissance poetry. Unlike many other considerations of Petrarch's poetry, this study takes into account through close reading the vast majority of the 366 poems included in the collection. At the same time it adopts a range of intertextual perspectives. It emphasizes the position of the Rime within Petrarch's own varied literary corpus and in relation to his precursors both classical and vernacular. New insights emerge into his transgressions and evasions of the primary Ovidian myth in the collection, into his engagement with Dante, and into his adaptation of the motifs of the romance quest. Sturm-Maddox also explores Petrarch's creation of a personal myth of poetic origins, one centered in Valchiusa as the locus of an amorous epiphany, and in the shade of the laurel as the locus of the production of Rime sparse. Ample notes complement the text, and English translations translations of the Italian poetry are included
