Book excerpt: Neutron scattering has become a key technique for investigating the properties of materials on an atomic scale. The uniqueness of this method is based on the fact that the wavelength and energy of thermal neutrons ideally match interatomic distances and excitation energies in condensed matter, and thus neutron scattering is able to directly examine the static and dynamic properties of the material. In addition, neutrons carry a magnetic moment, which makes them a unique probe for detecting magnetic phenomena. In this important book, an introduction to the basic principles and instrumental aspects of neutron scattering is provided, and the most important phenomena and materials properties in condensed matter physics are described and exemplified by typical neutron scattering experiments, with emphasis on explaining how the relevant information can be extracted from the measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the phonon frequencies and lifetimes from these experiments. When a crystal has anharmonicities interference effects can occur between processes in which the neutron creates several phonons; these coherences are due to the fact that when a phonon can decay into several phonons, the final state in which the neutron has created one phonon is not orthogonal to final states in which the neutron has created several phonons. It is shown that the Placzek sum rule is still a valid guide in subtracting the multiphonon background from the experimental cross-section. The remaining cross-section is the sum of the one-phonon cross-section and the ''one-phonon, several-phonon'' interference terms. The one phonon cross-section has a resonance at the phonon frequency, with a width proportional to the inverse of the phonon lifetimm0-however, the interference terms have the effect of shift ing the center of this resonance, as observed, from the one-phonon frequency, and also changing the shape from an expected Lorentizian form. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive account of diffuse neutron scattering, a unique tool for determining structural disorder in solids. The text takes the reader through theoretical, computational and experimental developments in the subject and describes in detail its application to a number of structural disorder problems. These include the more traditional subjects of substitutional disorder in alloys and orientational disorder in molecular systems as well as the more recent studies of superior and framework materials. Particular emphasis is placed on recent refinement methods for data interpretation and these are compared with established computer simulation techniques and analytical approaches. The book collects disparate themes into one unique volume, which is written as an introduction to the methods for graduate scientist and as a valuable reference or the expert crystallographer who wishes to apply modern interpretative techniques to diffuse scattering data.

Book excerpt: The total neutron cross sections of polycrystalline compounds, such as closed packed hexagonal ZnO, body centered cubic TiBr, and face centered cubic CaO and TiC were determined with the Argonne neutron velocity selector and neutron crystal spectrometer in the energy region of 0.001 to 1.0 electron volt. From the size of the cross section peaks which are due to coherent scattering of neutrons the following scattering amplitudes were determined: Ca, +0.46 x 10-l2 cm; Ti, -0.25 x 10-12 cm; T1, +0.75 x 10-12 cm. The previously reported value of +0.58 x 10-12 cm for Zn was confirmed. The free atom scattering cross section of Ca is 2.5 barns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 63 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry provides an introduction for those not yet familiar with neutrons by describing basic features of neutrons and their interaction with matter as well illustrating important applications. The volume is divided into 17 Chapters. The first two chapters introduce properties of neutrons and neutron facilities, setting the stage for applications. Some applications rely on single crystals (Chapter 3) but mostly powders (Chapters 4-5) and bulk polycrystals (Chapters 15-16) are analyzed, at ambient conditions as well as low and high temperature and high pressure (Chapters 7-9). Characterization of magnetic structures remains a core application of neutron scattering (Chapter 6). The analysis of neutron data is not trivial and crystallographic methods have been modified to take account of the complexities, such as the Rietveld technique (Chapter 4) and the pair distribution function (Chapter 11). Information is not only obtained about solids but about liquids, melts and aqueous solutions as well (Chapters 11-13). In fact this field, approached with inelastic scattering (Chapter 10) and small angle scattering (Chapter 13) is opening unprecedented opportunities for earth sciences. Small angle scattering also contributes information about microstructures (Chapter 14). Neutron diffraction has become a favorite method to quantify residual stresses in deformed materials (Chapter 16) as well as preferred orientation patterns (Chapter 15). The volume concludes with a short introduction into neutron tomography and radiography that may well emerge as a principal application of neutron scattering in the future (Chapter 17).
