Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scattering of plane compressional waves by a spherical obstacle in an elastic solid, which was investigated by Ying and Truell, is examined further. For a rigid inclusion, the boundary conditions are redefined to take into considera the motion of the inclusion inside the solid. By a proper limiting process, it is shown that the solutions for a rigid insert, a fluid sphere, a cavity, or an obstacle in a fluid, are all derivable from the general results of an elastic inclusion. In each case, the rates of energy scattering due to a small obstacle are found to be inversely proportional to the fourth power of wave length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, step-by-step reference to the Nyström Method for solving Electromagnetic problems using integral equations Computational electromagnetics studies the numerical methods or techniques that solve electromagnetic problems by computer programming. Currently, there are mainly three numerical methods for electromagnetic problems: the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), finite element method (FEM), and integral equation methods (IEMs). In the IEMs, the method of moments (MoM) is the most widely used method, but much attention is being paid to the Nyström method as another IEM, because it possesses some unique merits which the MoM lacks. This book focuses on that method—providing information on everything that students and professionals working in the field need to know. Written by the top researchers in electromagnetics, this complete reference book is a consolidation of advances made in the use of the Nyström method for solving electromagnetic integral equations. It begins by introducing the fundamentals of the electromagnetic theory and computational electromagnetics, before proceeding to illustrate the advantages unique to the Nyström method through rigorous worked out examples and equations. Key topics include quadrature rules, singularity treatment techniques, applications to conducting and penetrable media, multiphysics electromagnetic problems, time-domain integral equations, inverse scattering problems and incorporation with multilevel fast multiple algorithm. Systematically introduces the fundamental principles, equations, and advantages of the Nyström method for solving electromagnetic problems Features the unique benefits of using the Nyström method through numerical comparisons with other numerical and analytical methods Covers a broad range of application examples that will point the way for future research The Nystrom Method in Electromagnetics is ideal for graduate students, senior undergraduates, and researchers studying engineering electromagnetics, computational methods, and applied mathematics. Practicing engineers and other industry professionals working in engineering electromagnetics and engineering mathematics will also find it to be incredibly helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics: Sound Fields and Transducers is a thoroughly updated version of Leo Beranek's classic 1954 book that retains and expands on the original's detailed acoustical fundamentals while adding practical formulas and simulation methods. Serving both as a text for students in engineering departments and as a reference for practicing engineers, this book focuses on electroacoustics, analyzing the behavior of transducers with the aid of electro-mechano-acoustical circuits. Assuming knowledge of electrical circuit theory, it starts by guiding readers through the basics of sound fields, the laws governing sound generation, radiation, and propagation, and general terminology. It then moves on to examine: Microphones (electrostatic and electromagnetic), electrodynamic loudspeakers, earphones, and horns Loudspeaker enclosures, baffles, and waveguides Miniature applications (e.g., MEMS in I-Pods and cellphones) Sound in enclosures of all sizes, such as school rooms, offices, auditoriums, and living rooms Numerical examples and summary charts are given throughout the text to make the material easily applicable to practical design. It is a valuable resource for experimenters, acoustical consultants, and to those who anticipate being engineering designers of audio equipment. An update for the digital age of Leo Beranek's classic 1954 book Acoustics Provides detailed acoustic fundamentals, enabling better understanding of complex design parameters, measurement methods, and data Extensive appendices cover frequency-response shapes for loudspeakers, mathematical formulas, and conversion factors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and scientific progress are based upqn intuition coordinated with a wide theoretical knowledge, experimental skill, and a realistic sense of the limitations of technology. Only a deep insight into physical phenomena will supply the necessary skills to handle the problems that arise in acoustics. The acoustician today needs to be well acquainted with mathematics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and physics; he also needs a good knowledge of statistics, signal processing, electrical theory, and of many other specialized subjects. Acquiring this background is a laborious task and would require the study of many different books. It is the goal of this volume to present this background in as thorough and readable a manner as possible so that the reader may turn to specialized publications or chapters of other books for further information without having to start at the preliminaries. In trying to accomplish this goal, mathematics serves only as a tool; the better our understanding of a physical phenomenon, the less mathematics is needed and the shorter and more concise are our computa tions. A word about the choice of subjects for this volume will be helpful to the reader. Even scientists of high standing are frequently not acquainted with the fundamentals needed in the field of acoustics. Chapters I to IX are devoted to these fundamentals. After studying Chapter I, which dis cusses the units and their relationships, the reader should have no difficulty converting from one system of units to any other.

This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inverse scattering problem is central to many areas of science and technology such as radar and sonar, medical imaging, geophysical exploration and nondestructive testing. This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this third edition, new sections have been added on the linear sampling and factorization methods for solving the inverse scattering problem as well as expanded treatments of iteration methods and uniqueness theorems for the inverse obstacle problem. These additions have in turn required an expanded presentation of both transmission eigenvalues and boundary integral equations in Sobolev spaces. As in the previous editions, emphasis has been given to simplicity over generality thus providing the reader with an accessible introduction to the field of inverse scattering theory. Review of earlier editions: “Colton and Kress have written a scholarly, state of the art account of their view of direct and inverse scattering. The book is a pleasure to read as a graduate text or to dip into at leisure. It suggests a number of open problems and will be a source of inspiration for many years to come.” SIAM Review, September 1994 “This book should be on the desk of any researcher, any student, any teacher interested in scattering theory.” Mathematical Intelligencer, June 1994
