Book excerpt: From renowned mental health expert and speaker Dr. Gabor Maté, Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD) as genetically based—and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition. In this breakthrough guide to understanding, treating, and healing Attention Deficit Disorder, Dr. Gabor Maté, bestselling author of The Myth of Normal, and himself diagnosed with ADD: Demonstrates that the condition is not a genetic “illness” but a response to environmental stress Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy – and why Shows how ‘distractibility’ is the psychological product of life experience Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviors Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood Presents a program of how to promote this development in both children and adults Whereas other books on the subject describe the condition as inherited, Dr. Maté believes that our social and emotional environments play a key role in both the cause of and cure for this condition. In Scattered Minds, he describes the painful realities of ADD and its effect on children as well as on career and social paths in adults. While acknowledging that genetics may indeed play a part in predisposing a person toward ADD, Dr. Maté moves beyond that to focus on the things we can control: changes in environment, family dynamics, and parenting choices. He draws heavily on his own experience with the disorder, as both an ADD sufferer and the parent of diagnosed children. Providing a thorough overview of ADD and its treatments, without blaming anyone, Scattered Minds is essential and life-changing reading for the millions of ADD sufferers in North America today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hello. My name is Rylan. I see you''ve found your way here. That''s wonderful. I suppose you''re interested in learning a bit more about why you should buy this book, as that''s what you''ve been trained to expect. Well, I better respect the structure, and I''ll try not to waste any more of your time. In short, this book is a story of a human, alive in a place, at a time, doing things and having thoughts. This book is an attempt to put down in words the way in which my mind works, in exhaustible and sometimes excruciating detail. It''s also my attempt to try and understand the world around me, and more specifically, to find a structure to express that. Basically, this book is my attempt at writing, in the purest form--writing for the pleasure of putting one word after another, and writing for developing the skill of capturing thought, and writing as a form of creative expression, and writing as catharsis. You may find some parts humorous, others sad, some shocking, some boring, others grotesque, uncomfortable, enraging, and some probably even embarrassing. In fact, I hope you do, as I felt all of those emotions at one point or another during the process. I think we all do. I''ve been endlessly fascinated by the way in which each individual perceives reality, as we all share similarities in the stimuli we''re exposed to. I like to read books in which you feel as though you''ve lived another life. Purchasing this book is akin to wearing my skin. It''s renting my eyes and leasing my mind. Purchasing this book will also afford me time to try again. I don''t know if I succeeded this time around, and I may not ever. Art is an elusive creature. I know that I did the best I could given my current abilities and the time I was afforded. That''s all we can ever do, I suppose. But, I do hope one day to reach out on that branch and catch Art, even if only fleeting. To catch that wild beast and hold on, fist full of her mane, hoofs pounding beneath us, carrying us as far as the eye can see from blue ridged mountains over waves of amber grain... sorry. Anyway, even if the farthest you get is reading this, I thank you. If you purchase this book, I thank you most graciously. I thank you for helping me. But, more than thanks, I have hope. I hope that you enjoy getting lost in the tumultuous seas of my mind and come from the voyage a stronger sailor; having wrestled storms, and hot, lazy, hazy, calm and whatever else... it''s March, 12, 2017... I still have so much editing to do and am getting side tracked again...P.S. Wondering what this book is about caused you to read these words, which were written by this author, to try and get you to read their book. You pause, look up from your screen, and see what''s before you. Same old stuff. If you purchase this book (and read it) you may look at that same old stuff a bit different. Or, maybe not. You might be beyond help; a sad, lost, little soul idly flipping through Kindle books hoping to uncover the next sizzling, summer, bad boy next door romance "novel". Well, you''re in the wrong spot, my friend. There''s a bit of a love story tangled somewhere in this mess, but it isn''t necessarily tantalizing. I''d suggest you check out... well, I''d better not do that here. P.P.S. There were no corporate henchman looking over my shoulder. This is unedited, traditionally. It''s a bit like an unfiltered beer or sake. It''s still made with all the same love and care, more even, really; the words have been hammered into place over months of grueling labor, yet, and again, I warn you, it''s still unpasteurized; it''s still raw. It''s a living culture: a kombucha. If you don''t like it, if you prefer homogenized, corporatized, pasteurized, lifeless garbage, then don''t pay the ten dollars. I''ll be fine. But, if you want to taste something different; if you want to live another life; if you want to escape your fleshy shackles; if you want to spend some time inside my skin, then buy the ticket and take the ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its 4.5 billion–year history, life on Earth has been almost erased at least half a dozen times: shattered by asteroid impacts, entombed in ice, smothered by methane, and torn apart by unfathomably powerful megavolcanoes. And we know that another global disaster is eventually headed our way. Can we survive it? How? As a species, Homo sapiens is at a crossroads. Study of our planet’s turbulent past suggests that we are overdue for a catastrophic disaster, whether caused by nature or by human interference. It’s a frightening prospect, as each of the Earth’s past major disasters—from meteor strikes to bombardment by cosmic radiation—resulted in a mass extinction, where more than 75 percent of the planet’s species died out. But in Scatter, Adapt, and Remember, Annalee Newitz, science journalist and editor of the science Web site io9.com explains that although global disaster is all but inevitable, our chances of long-term species survival are better than ever. Life on Earth has come close to annihilation—humans have, more than once, narrowly avoided extinction just during the last million years—but every single time a few creatures survived, evolving to adapt to the harshest of conditions. This brilliantly speculative work of popular science focuses on humanity’s long history of dodging the bullet, as well as on new threats that we may face in years to come. Most important, it explores how scientific breakthroughs today will help us avoid disasters tomorrow. From simulating tsunamis to studying central Turkey’s ancient underground cities; from cultivating cyanobacteria for “living cities” to designing space elevators to make space colonies cost-effective; from using math to stop pandemics to studying the remarkable survival strategies of gray whales, scientists and researchers the world over are discovering the keys to long-term resilience and learning how humans can choose life over death. Newitz’s remarkable and fascinating journey through the science of mass extinctions is a powerful argument about human ingenuity and our ability to change. In a world populated by doomsday preppers and media commentators obsessively forecasting our demise, Scatter, Adapt, and Remember is a compelling voice of hope. It leads us away from apocalyptic thinking into a future where we live to build a better world—on this planet and perhaps on others. Readers of this book will be equipped scientifically, intellectually, and emotionally to face whatever the future holds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deconstructs the whole lineage of political philosophy, showing the ways democracy abuts and regularly undermines the sovereignist tradition across a range of texts from the Iliad to contemporary philosophy. Politics is an object of perennial difficulty for philosophy—as recalcitrant to philosophical mastery as is philosophy’s traditional adversary, poetry. That difficulty makes it an attractive topic for any deconstructive approach to the tradition from which we inherit our language and our concepts. Scatter 2 pursues that deconstruction, often starting with, and sometimes departing from, the work of Jacques Derrida by attending to the concepts of sovereignty on the one hand and democracy on the other. The book begins by following the fate of a line from Homer’s Iliad, where Odysseus asserts that “the rule of many is no good thing, let there be one ruler, one king.” The line, Bennington shows, is quoted, misquoted, and progressively Christianized by Aristotle, Philo Judaeus, Suetonius, the early Church Fathers, Aquinas, Dante, Ockham, Marsilius of Padua, Jean Bodin, Etienne de la Boétie, up to Carl Schmitt and Erik Peterson, and even one of the defendants at the Nuremberg trials, before being discussed by Derrida himself. In the book’s second half, Bennington begins again with Plato and Aristotle and tracks the concept of democracy as it regularly abuts and undermines that sovereignist tradition. In detailed readings of Hobbes and Rousseau, Bennington develops a notion of “proto-democracy” as a possible name for the scatter that underlies and drives the political as such and that will always prevent politics from achieving its aim of bringing itself to an end.

But suddenly, in the afterglow of those happy days after Jesus’ resurrection, the world suddenly collapsed in on top of Jake. The hammer of religious persecution fell upon the Christian church in Jerusalem. The chief priests and zealous religious leaders savagely chased after all of Christ’s believers, as the leaders attempted to wipe the Christian ‘cult’ from the face of the earth. And the violent persecution of Christ’s followers had a sinister face to it – Saul of Tarsus! Jake found himself and his pretty secretary, Hannah, caught in the onslaught and on the run. The persecution was crashing in all around them. Christians were being imprisoned. Some were being brutalized. Some were being killed. Jake and Hannah stayed one jump ahead of the devouring enemy. But how long could they avoid the clutches of the vicious mob hunting for them? As they ran for their lives, a completely bizarre mystery began to unfold right before their very eyes. It haunted their every step and crouched in every dark, hidden corner. What was happening? The elusive mystery had no explanation. No rhyme nor reason. Or did it? Wherever they hid, the religious terror prowled right outside the door. Could Jake and Hannah somehow dodge the relentless menace? If they were caught, what brutal tactics would Saul and the authorities savage upon them? Jake knew that time was running out for them and the walls were slowly crushing in upon them.

Even after twelve years, Gemma Enman can still remember her amazement and pride at being singled out from among her siblings by her father to travel with him by train from Prince Edward Island all the way to Brookfield, New Hampshire. But seven year old Gemma had no way of knowing how long and tedious a trip it would be or that her father planned to return to their island home without her. Though she has enjoyed a loving home with her grandparents, she remains deeply wounded by her childhood abandonment and haunted by the fear that a shameful secret surrounded the circumstances of her birth. Now a young woman, Gemma has met and fallen in love with Lionel Maines, a man of honor, integrity, and prospects. As Gemma and Lionel plan for their future together, Gemma continues to be haunted by her past. She knows that before she can fulfill her pledge to Lionel, she must keep a promise she made to herself.
