Book excerpt: Reality Television meets Reality Reading. A quirky read, full of drama, madness, and off beat fun. Being Scarlett Emerson has never been easy. Dealing with memories of a dysfunctional childhood, neurotic parents, being widowed at 23, then losing her first-born at age 11 can be difficult to handle emotional at times. So after years of tears, therapy and medication that didn't work, for her own medicinal purposes, she decided to journal her way to sanity, by giving herself an outlet to express her feelings about day-to-day life, past and present. Keeping nothing silent about how she feels about her life and the people in it. A chronicle of her own fact-based opinions, through wit, grit and charm that can be unpredictable, funny and truly outspoken.
Download or read book Scarlett's Sisters written by Anya Jabour and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarlett's Sisters explores the meaning of nineteenth-century southern womanhood from the vantage point of the celebrated fictional character's flesh-and-blood counterparts: young, elite, white women. Anya Jabour demonstrates that southern girls and young women faced a major turning point when the Civil War forced them to assume new roles and responsibilities as independent women. Examining the lives of more than 300 girls and women between ages fifteen and twenty-five, Jabour traces the socialization of southern white ladies from early adolescence through young adulthood. Amidst the upheaval of the Civil War, Jabour shows, elite young women, once reluctant to challenge white supremacy and male dominance, became more rebellious. They adopted the ideology of Confederate independence in shaping a new model of southern womanhood that eschewed dependence on slave labor and male guidance. By tracing the lives of young white women in a society in flux, Jabour reveals how the South's old social order was maintained and a new one created as southern girls and young women learned, questioned, and ultimately changed what it meant to be a southern lady.

Her body seems to have betrayed her. Her confidence in the goodness of God is rattled. Her loved ones don't know what to say. Her heart is broken. She may feel guilty, ashamed, angry, depressed, confused, or alone. Book Synopsis Screening Scarlett Johansson by : Janice Loreck
Download or read book Screening Scarlett Johansson written by Janice Loreck and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Screening Scarlett Johansson: Gender, Genre, Stardom provides an account of Johansson’s persona, work and stardom, extending from her breakout roles in independent cinema, to contemporary blockbusters, to her self-parodying work in science-fiction. Screening Scarlett Johansson is more than an account of Johansson’s career; it positions Johansson as a point of reference for interrogating how femininity, sexuality, identity and genre play out through a contemporary woman star and the textual manipulations of her image. The chapters in this collection cast a critical eye over the characters Johansson has portrayed, the personas she has inhabited, and how the two intersect and influence one another. They draw out the multitude of meanings generated through and inherent to her performances, specifically looking at processes of transformation, metamorphosis and self-deconstruction depicted in her work.

Book Synopsis A Study of Scarletts by : Margaret Donovan Bauer
Download or read book A Study of Scarletts written by Margaret Donovan Bauer and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study examines Scarlett O’Hara as a literary archetype, revealing critical prejudice against strong female characters. There are two portrayals of Scarlett O’Hara: the famous one of the film Gone with the Wind and Margaret Mitchell’s more sympathetic character in the book. In A Study of Scarletts, Margaret D. Bauer examines both, noting that although Scarlett is just sixteen at the start of the novel, she is criticized for behavior that would have been excused if she were a man. Her stalwart determination in the face of extreme adversity made Scarlett an icon and an inspiration to female readers. Yet today she is often condemned as a sociopathic shrew. Bauer offers a more complex and sympathetic reading of Scarlett before examining Scarlett-like characters in other novels, including Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, Ellen Glasgow’s Barren Ground, Toni Morrison’s Sula, and Kat Meads’ The Invented Life of Kitty Duncan. Through these selections, Bauer touches on themes of female independence, mother-daughter relationships, the fraught nature of romance, and the importance of female friendship.

Book Synopsis The Office of Scarlet Letter by : Sacvan Bercovitch
Download or read book The Office of Scarlet Letter written by Sacvan Bercovitch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Scarlet Letter has proved our most enduring classic," writes Sacvan Bercovitch, "because it is the liberal example par excellence of art as ideological mimesis. To understand the office of the A is to see how culture empowers symbolic form, including forms of dissent, and how symbols participate in the dynamics of culture, including the dynamics of constraint."With an approach that both reflects and contests developments in literary studies, Bercovitch explores these connections from two perspectives: first, he examines a historical reading of the novel's unities; and then, a rhetorical analysis of key mid-nineteenth-century issues, at home and abroad. In order to highlight the relation between rhetoric and history, he focuses on the point at which the scarlet letter does its office at last, the moment when Hester decides to come home to America. In The Office of "The Scarlet Letter," Bercovitch argues that the process by which the United States usurped "America" for itself, symbolically, is also the process by which liberalism established political and economic dominance. In the course of his study, he offers sustained discussions of Hawthorne's irony and ambiguity, of aesthetic and social strategies of cohesion, and of the conundrums of liberal dissent. Winner of the Modern Language Association's James Russell Lowe prize, The Office of "The Scarlet Letter" provides a theoretical redefinition of the function of symbolism in culture and an exemplary literary-ideological reading of a major text.
