Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interrelationship between terrorism and policy relevance from a range of critical perspectives. In particular, it questions the politics of policy-relevance; that is, it interrogates how epistemological and practical pressures to produce "policy-relevant" research shapes prevalent understandings of (counter)terrorism, and vice-versa. It also reflects on Critical Terrorism Studies’ (CTS) relationship to policy-relevance. Should CTS eschew engagement with policy-relevance and maintain a position outside the orthodoxy, or are CTS scholars uniquely positioned to offer meaningful alternatives to contemporary counterterrorism practices? Read thus, the question of policy relevance is central to CTS’ identity and represents an essential juncture as to how associated scholarship might develop into the future.

Book excerpt: Six cousins from Kansas, Texas, and North Carolina spend part of their summer together with their grandparents in Aiken, South Carolina, and share some unexpected high adventure—from solving some mysterious local ghost legends to helping bring some bumbling criminals to justice. On the journey, they learn a lot about the local area, a charming Southern town packed with history; make new friends; meet some unforgettable characters; learn valuable life lessons; and build their Christian faith. Oh, and they have a lot of fun along the way! Many of their discoveries occur in Aiken’s Hitchcock Woods, the largest privately owned urban forest in the United States. It’s in the Woods, with its over 2100 acres of forestland and greater than seventy miles of sandy equestrian trails, that one day, they overhear a trio of thieves, who are hiding out from the authorities and planning their next crime. They realize the thieves are targeting an elderly lady who has become a friend of theirs, and when the local police don’t believe their story, they hatch their own plan to catch the “Banditos.” The cousins, who really don’t believe in ghosts—at least at first—learn of more than one ghost story stemming from The Battle of Aiken during the Civil War and Aiken’s “Winter Colony” days in the 19th century. What will they find out about these bumps and thumps in the night? Hang on to the edge of your seat!

Book excerpt: “World War Offshore” – no one knows how it started, or who’s behind it, but one thing’s for certain: it’s the biggest anti-capitalist demonstration the world has ever seen. Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators, spread across six continents, demanding an end to the “non-accountability of the 1%”, re-regulation of the world’s financial services, and a new era of social justice. MI7 takes the view that it’s a problem best left to the appropriate law enforcement agencies – with the exception of one little detail. In order to get off the ground so effectively, its organisers had to bypass GCHQ in Britain, and the NSA in America. A breathtakingly impressive achievement, and possibly an ominous one. Next time, whoever does that may not be so benign. Agent John Mordred is assigned to investigate. His enquiry takes him halfway across the globe before depositing him in the Crown dependency of Jersey for what looks like a war of attrition. And then, completely out of the blue, there’s a breakthrough. Written before the publication of either the Panama Papers or the Paradise Papers, World War O tackles one of the most hotly-debated topics of recent times. Taxation and corporate wealth. Just what, if anything, do the rich owe to the poor?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on archival as well as rich interview material, John F. Lyons examines the role of Chicago public schoolteachers and their union, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), in shaping the policies and practices of public education in Chicago from 1937 to 1970. From the union's formation in 1937 until the 1960s, the CTU was the largest and most influential teachers' union in the country, operating in the nation's second largest school system. Although all Chicago public schoolteachers were committed to such bread-and-butter demands as higher salaries, many teachers also sought a more rigorous reform of the school system through calls for better working conditions, greater classroom autonomy, more funding for education, and the end of political control of the schools. Using political action, public relations campaigns, and community alliances, the CTU successfully raised members' salaries and benefits, increased school budgets, influenced school curricula, and campaigned for greater equality for women within the Chicago public education system. Examining teachers' unions and public education from the bottom up, Lyons shows how teachers' unions helped to shape one of the largest public education systems in the nation. Taking into consideration the larger political context, such as World War II, the McCarthy era, and the civil rights movements of the 1960s, this study analyzes how the teachers' attempts to improve their working lives and the quality of the Chicago public school system were constrained by internal divisions over race and gender as well as external disputes between the CTU and the school administration, state and local politicians, and powerful business and civic organizations. Because of the obstacles they faced and the decisions they made, unionized teachers left many problems unresolved, but they effected changes to public education and to local politics that still benefit Chicago teachers and the public today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a new dawn for the C-in-C, whose ascension to power is the result of the assassination of the reformist military head of state, General Mutallah Mohammed, who once promised to transfer power to a democratic government and failed. As a handful of military leaders meet in a private guest house, it soon becomes evident there are cracks in the military foundation and that a palace coup is boiling just beneath the surface. The leaders know they must choose who will be the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But the question remainswho? As soon as General Obasanjo becomes the new president, the nation is plunged into chaos. As a revolution brings masses to the streets who destroy and paralyze all government institutions, Obas realizes he must terminate the ruthlessness of the mafia by appointing the no-nonsense, second-in-command military ruler, Brigadier Taju Agbon, to power. But all of Obass efforts are in vain as more intolerants emerge, the upper class is attacked, and corrupt politicians are robbed of their wealth and properties. In this action-packed tale full of surprising twists and turns, the reign of the last dictator precariously hangs in the balance as he attempts to rule over a nation in jeopardy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-communism has long been a potent force in American politics, capable of gripping both government and popular attention. Nowhere is this more evident that the two great 'red scares' of 1919-20 and 1946-54; the latter generally - if somewhat inaccurately - termed McCarthyism. The interlude between these two major scares has tended to garner less attention, but as this volume makes clear, the lingering effects of 1919-20 and the gathering storm-clouds of 'McCarthyism' were clearly visible throughout the 20s and 30s, even if in a more low-key way. Indeed, the period between the two great red scares was marked by frequent instances of political repression, often justified on anti-communist grounds, at local, state and federal levels. Yet these events have been curiously neglected in the history of American political repression and anti-communism, perhaps because much of the material deals with events scattered in time and space which never reached the intensity of the two great scares. By focusing on this twenty-five year 'interim' period, the essays in this collection bridge the gap between the two high-profile 'red scares' thus offering a much more contextualised and fluid narrative for American anti-communism. In so doing the rationale and motivations for the 'red scares' can be seen as part of an evolving political landscape, rather than as isolated bouts of hysteria exploding onto - and then vanishing from - the political scene. Instead, a much more nuanced appreciation of the conflicting interests and fears of government, politicians, organised labour, free-speech advocates, employers, and the press is offered, which will be of interest to anyone wishing to better understand the political history of modern America.
