Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are only few discoveries and new technologies in physical sciences that have the potential to dramatically alter and revolutionize our electronic world. Topological insulators are one of them. The present book for the first time provides a full overview and in-depth knowledge about this hot topic in materials science and condensed matter physics. Written by an international team of experts, many of them directly involved in the very first discovery of topological insulators, the book provides the readers with the knowledge they need to understand the electronic behavior of these unique materials. Being more than a reference work, this book is essential for newcomers and advanced researchers working in the field of topological insulators.

Book Synopsis Supramolecular Materials and Technologies by : David N. Reinhoudt
Download or read book Supramolecular Materials and Technologies written by David N. Reinhoudt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry relates recent developments and new exciting approaches in supramolecular chemistry. The series covers all areas from theoretical and modelling aspects through organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry to materials, solid-state and polymer sciences reflecting the many and varied applications of supramolecular structures in modern chemistry. From the early days of supramolecular chemistry the field has been associated with possible applications. This is not surprising as the design of new molecules, and later of assemblies of molecules, is often function-driven. Now, after three decades of supramolecular chemistry, David Reinhoudt has brought together a collection of reviews to reflect on the applications that have actually been achieved. The first applications in molecular recognition are now established technologies in analytical chemistry, separation science and medicine. More recently, developments have taken place in material design and these concepts are also discussed here. Contents * Self-Assembling Systems on Scales from Nanometers to Millimeters: Design and Discovery * Dendritic Architectures * Supramolecular Structures with Macromolecules * Chemosensors: Synthetic Receptors in Analytical Sensing Applications * Selective Ion Recognition with Durable Sensors * Ion Separations in Membrane and Solid Phase Extraction Systems * Porphyrin- and Expanded Pophyrin-Based Diagnostic and Therapeutic Agents Supramolecular Materials and Technologies illustrates the achievements and advances that supramolecular chemistry has made in many fields from organic chemistry to materials science and from analytical chemistry to molecular biology.

This book brings together for the first time the crystallographic descriptions and experimental methods for the structural and microstructural analysis of modulated crystals as described by well-known researchers in the various areas. The emphasis is on charge density wave modulations, and the detailed analysis of the prototypical NbTe4/TaTe4 system gives practical applications of the methods. Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy is a new technique providing significant new insights into atomic scale details of the modulations' structures and a chapter on this method is included.

Download or read book The Vortex State written by N. Bontemps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most spectacular consequences of the description of the superfluid condensate in superfluid He or in superconductors as a single macroscopic quantum state is the quantization of circulation, resulting in quantized vortex lines. This book draws no distinction between superfluid He3 and He4 and superconductors. The reader will find the essential introductory chapters and the most recent theoretical and experimental progress in our understanding of the vortex state in both superconductors and superfluids, from lectures given by leading experts in the field, both experimentalists and theoreticians, who gathered in Cargèse for a NATO ASI. The peculiar features related to short coherence lengths, 2D geometry, high temperatures, disorder, and pinning are thoroughly discussed.

Book Synopsis Diverse Quantization Phenomena in Layered Materials by : Chiun-Yan Lin
Download or read book Diverse Quantization Phenomena in Layered Materials written by Chiun-Yan Lin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers a comprehensive overview of diverse quantization phenomena in layered materials, covering current mainstream experimental and theoretical research studies, and presenting essential properties of layered materials along with a wealth of figures. This book illustrates commonly used synthesis methods of these 2D materials and compares the calculated results and experimental measurements, including novel features not yet reported. The book also discusses experimental measurements of magnetic quantization, theoretical modeling for studying systems and covers diversified magneto-electronic properties, magneto-optical selection rules, unusual quantum Hall conductivities, and single- and many-particle magneto-Coulomb excitations. Rich and unique behaviors are clearly revealed in few-layer graphene systems with distinct stacking configuration, stacking-modulated structures, silicon-doped lattices, bilayer silicene/germanene systems with the bottom-top and bottom-bottom buckling structures, monolayer and bilayer phosphorene systems, and quantum topological insulators. The generalized tight-binding model, the static and dynamic Kubo formulas, and the random-phase approximation are developed/modified to thoroughly explore the fundamental properties and propose the concise physical pictures. Different high-resolution experimental measurements are discussed in detail, and they are consistent with the theoretical predictions. Aimed at readers working in materials science, physics, and engineering this book should be useful for potential applications in energy storage, electronic devices, and optoelectronic devices.

Book Synopsis Frontiers in Crystalline Matter by : National Research Council
Download or read book Frontiers in Crystalline Matter written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the past 60 years, the U.S. research community dominated the discovery of new crystalline materials and the growth of large single crystals, placing the country at the forefront of fundamental advances in condensed-matter sciences and fueling the development of many of the new technologies at the core of U.S. economic growth. The opportunities offered by future developments in this field remain as promising as the achievements of the past. However, the past 20 years have seen a substantial deterioration in the United States' capability to pursue those opportunities at a time when several European and Asian countries have significantly increased investments in developing their own capacities in these areas. This book seeks both to set out the challenges and opportunities facing those who discover new crystalline materials and grow large crystals and to chart a way for the United States to reinvigorate its efforts and thereby return to a position of leadership in this field.
