Book excerpt: A new type of Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) was designed and constructed to study the surface morphology of small catalyst particles. This is the first application of the STM in the study of supported metal particles. The STM was used to study the surface morphology of Au/Pd films that were sputter deposited onto mica and subsequently sintered in air, as well as equilibrium gold particles formed and supported on graphite. New structures were observed on both the film and particle samples. The surfaces are very rough on the nanometer scale range that the STM can easily resolve. The Au/Pd films were observed to deposit uniformly on atomically fat mica even at low thickness (50 A). Annealing the metal film resulted in surface roughening, and particle-like formations on the surface. The smooth film character disappeared after short annealing times, and extended annealing resulted in discontinuous film samples that could no longer be imaged with the STM. The surface roughness of small gold particles supported on graphite appeared to be dependent upon the particle size. Small particles ($$300 A) were seen to possess a wavy surface with generally smooth features. The significance of these results is greatest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. The structures observed on these small, model catalyst materials, may provide an insight into the structure/function relationship of supported metal catalysts. Processing conditions appear to influence the surface structure of these small particles, perhaps allowing more specific catalyst preparations to be developed.

Book excerpt: Many properties of the thin films are different from the bulk value and in many cases, depend dramatically on the film thickness. In the metallic ultra-thin films epitaxially grown on the semiconductor substrate, the conduction electrons are confined by the vacuum and metal-semiconductor interface. When the film thickness is comparable to the electron Fermi wavelength, this confinement will produce discrete energy levels known as quantum well states (QWS), which dramatically modify the electronic structures of the thin film and this is called quantum size effect (QSE). QSE will have a profound effect on a lot of physical properties of the thin films. Among various systems exhibiting QSE, Pb/Si (111) is the most widely studied one and exhibits the richest phenomena in QSE. In this study, a home made low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy (LT-STM/S) was used to study the superconductivities of the Pb thin films. Quantum oscillations of the superconductivity have been observed for the films down to 4 monolayer and the oscillation amplitude increases as the film gets thinner. To resolve the discrepancies between the superconductivities measured with ex-situ transport and in-situ STS. We also studied the influence of Au overlay on the Pb thin films with LT-STM/S, and found out the deposition of Au on Pb dramatically roughened the Pb films. Finally, we successfully grew large scale near perfect 2ML Pb films. There are two types of films which exhibit different Moiré patterns. LT-STS studies revealed there is big difference in the superconductivity Tc of these two films, both of which decreased dramatically from that of the 4ML film.

Abstract: Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) have attracted intensive research interests due to their extraordinary properties and potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. In this thesis, epitaxial growths of two-dimensional (2D) MoSe2 and WSe2 thin films were carried out in Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Multiple characterization techniques were employed to investigate thin films' structural, morphological, electronic and optical properties. A series of submonolayer MoSe2 coverage samples have been grown on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate. Growth temperature and post-growth annealing temperature were seen to have obvious impacts on film's morphology and crystal quality. Layer-by-layer growth mode has been identified for the Van der Waals epitaxy of MoSe2 on HOPG. Dense networks of inversion domain boundaries (IDBs) have been observed in as-grown MoSe2 epifilms by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their density can be tuned by changing the MBE conditions. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements reveal mid-gap electronic states associated with the IDB defects. STS measurements also reveal energy bandgaps of monolayer (ML) and bilayer (BL) MoSe2. ML WSe2 thin films were also grown at varying conditions on HOPG substrates through the Van der Waals epitaxy process and the growth characteristics were found similar to that of MoSe2. However, differences are also noted, particularly about the IDB defects. Contrary to MoSe2, as-grown WSe2 films do not contain the line defects. The reason behind such differences will be discussed. Finally, besides the STM/S studies about the morphological and electronic properties of MBE MoSe2 and WSe2 films, high quality samples have been synthesized on graphene-on-SiC substrate with reduced defect density and well-controlled thicknesses for some ex situ characterizations by photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy methods. The results will be summarized and discussed in this thesis. Subjects: Molecular beam epitaxy Metallic films

Cu2N is a reconstruction of the Cu(100) surface caused by the adsorption of nitrogen atoms and shows insulating properties. A fundamental motivation for this work was to study the properties and size dependent evolution of an ultrathin insulating film. Insulating films of only a few atomic layers offer insight into the evolution of electronic structure and have been used to control electronic coupling at the nanoscale.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oxidation of Pd(100) in an oxygen plasma was studied. Different from O2 oxidation, which results in a ( 5x5 )R270 structure and an O coverage that saturates at 0.8 ML, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed bulk PdO formation by plasma exposure at 550 K. TPD result of propene reaction on such surfaces showed only a single peak at 490 K for all carbon oxides and water, suggesting a direct oxidation pathway for the adsorbed intact propene molecules. The initial sticking coefficient of propene on the PdO clusters was close to unity indicating a high reaction rate on the oxide surface.
