Book excerpt: In recent decades oil analysis laboratories have used automatic particle counters to determine the number and size of particles in many oil wetted systems. Once determined, there has been the question of "what are they?" Logically, the next step is to investigate the make-up of the particles by extracting the particles and analyzing using emission spectroscopy and/or a filter membrane for view them under magnification. Characterizing the make-up of the particles is very useful in determining the source. A cost-effective action plan can be undertaken to rectify the identified problem once the particle type is determined. The problem with these two approaches is; emission spectroscopy analysis is often unreliable in identifying larger particles and; under optical magnification it is not possible to tell for sure the makeup of the particles. In some cases scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis is undertaken to further identify the particles. This proves to be time-consuming for the SEM operator and is left to the operator to judge which areas of the sample to investigate. This study illustrates the performance and innovative approach to resolving the aforementioned limitations on sizing and identifying particles using an "Automated Electron Beam Particle Analyzer" equipped with "Automated Feature Analysis" (AFA) software to characterize complex matrix of particles extracted onto a membrane filter from oil samples.

Book excerpt: Levels of air pollutants in the Vaal Triangle area have been a cause of public concern for a number of years. A pilot study was launched with the purpose of developing standard operating procedures for the sampling, bulk inorganic and organic chemical analysis, and single-particle analysis of airborne particulates from this region, as well as statistical data handling procedures. Guidelines set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the Receptor Model as applied to the source apportionment of airborne particulates is adhered to in this instance. Samples of airborne particulate pollutants from four sites in the Vereeniging area were subjected to single-particle analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray-fluorescence analysis and image-analysis using a scanning electron microscope. Nineteen chemical and five physical parameters were measured. Two sub-sets of data were distinguished on the basis of particle size, and each was subjected to various cluster-analysis procedures. Seventeen chemical species were identified in each sub-set of data. These species were further subdivided on the morphological characteristics, and allocated to one or more source categories. It is anticipated that, as source profiles become better established, better source apportionment will be possible.

Book excerpt: Filtration of aerosols is omnipresent in our daily lives, in areas as diverse as health, the protection of people and the environment, and air treatment inside buildings. However, the collection of particles within a filter media is not, contrary to popular belief, linked to a simple screen effect. The phenomena involved are much more complex and require the consideration of aerosol interactions, filter media and process conditions to select the best fiber filter for a given application. Aerosol Filtration, book for students, hygiene or process engineers, fibrous media manufacturers, designers, and filtration system suppliers or users addresses the filtration of aerosols in six chapters. These chapters cover physics and aerosol characterization, the fibrous media, and efficiency and filter clogging by solid or liquid aerosols, with special attention to the filtration of the nanoparticles. - Analyses the behavior of fibrous media against solid and liquid aerosols - Presents models of efficiency and pressure drop - Introduces computing elements for estimating the lifetime of filters - Provides guidance for designing filters and predicting their behavior over time

Book excerpt: Particulate materials with unique functional properties have been the focus of much attention in recent years. Of particular interest, due to their considerable scientific and technological importance, are particles coated with nanoparticles. These have greatly stimulated interest for their novel structure and properties. In these kinds of particulate materials, the interface structures between the support particle and the nanoparticle play a crucial role in controlling their properties. Consequently, imaging of the atomic structures at the interfaces can provide deep understanding of the relationship between the particulate and the corresponding properties. Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) provides a new view of materials on the atomic scale, a direct image of atomic structure composition which can be interpreted without the need for any preconceived model structure. Therefore it is a powerful tool in the study of particulate materials. In this report, the authors present the structures of 18 micron diameter alumina particles coated with Ag nanoparticles. Particulates were prepared by a laser ablation technique, which involves laser ablation of the target material (Ag) onto a fluidized bed of core particles (alumina). The core alumina particles were fluidized inside the deposition system using a mechanical vibration method. For the STEM analysis, the particulates were lightly crushed in water using a pestle and mortar, then diluted in ethanol and deposited on a TEM grid coated with an amorphous carbon thin film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sampling tests indicated that the polycarbonate filters were marginally acceptable for in-stack fine-particle collection because of their 230 F melting point as well as requiring carbon coating to reduce charging effects. Vitreous carbon substrates, although not porous, have acceptable thermal stability as well as acceptable levels of charging. A porous silver membrane filter is also being considered for future testing. Pure reference samples of secondary aerosols have been successfully been collected on vitreous carbon substrates with good dispersion and found suitable for direct examination by scanning electron microscope (SEM) without prior coating or preparation. These samples will be used to develop optimum SEM measurement and quantification techniques related to the analysis of fine secondary aerosols.
