Pa, Os, Ir, Rh, Ru, V, Si, Mn, Sn, Pb, W, Sb, Ge, Al, Ti, Mg, Zn, La, and Ba. Also, Zr-base ternary alloys were prepared using the elements Cu, Ni, Nb, Ta, V, Sn, Sb, and W. The maximum total alloy content of the alloys was five per cent. The Zr used was low-Hf sponge, and the alloys were prepared-by arc melting in an Ar atmosphere. The alloys were tested for scaling resistance at the temperatures 1200, 1500, and 1800 deg F in a multi-specimen furnace for periods up to about 300 hours. Scaling Propensity of the alloys was evaluated on the basis of the weight increase per unit area as compared to that of unalloyed Zr. The binary alloys containing Ni and Cu showed the greatest scaling resistance of all the binary alloys at all temperatures. Ternary alloys showed little or no improvement over the most scaling resistant binary alloys. The number of alloys more resistant than unalloyed Zr was about the same at 1200 and 1500 deg F, but was considerably more at 1800 deg F. In general, there was some change in the order of relative scaling propensity based on the average weight increase per average. unit area per hour at the three temperatures. A logarithmic plot of weight increase versus time for most of the alloys showed a sharp increase in the scaling rate after various periods of time, whereas very few showed a decrease. (auth).

Book excerpt: In the post-Fukushima world, thermal and structural stability of materials under extreme conditions is an important issue for the safety of nuclear reactors. Because the nuclear industry will continue using zirconium (Zr) cladding for the foreseeable future, it becomes critical to gain a fundamental understanding of several interconnected problems. First, what are the thermodynamic and kinetic factors affecting oxidation and hydrogen pick-up by these materials at normal, off-normal conditions, and in long-term storage? Secondly, what protective coatings could be used in order to gain valuable time at off-normal conditions (temperature exceeds ~1200°C (2200°F)? Thirdly, the kinetics of the coating's oxidation must be understood. Lastly, one needs automated inspection algorithms allowing identifying cladding's defects. This work attempts to explore the problem from a computational perspective, utilizing first principles atomistic simulations, computational thermodynamics, plasticity theory, and morphological algorithms of image processing for defect identification. It consists of the four parts dealing with these four problem areas preceded by the introduction. In the 1st part, computational thermodynamics and ab initio calculations were used to shed light upon the different stages of zircaloy oxidation and hydrogen pickup, and microstructure optimization to increase thermal stability. The 2nd part describes the kinetic theory of oxidation of the several materials considered to be perspective coatings for Zr alloys: SiC and ZrSiO4. The 3rd part deals with understanding the respective roles of the two different plasticity mechanisms in Zr nuclear alloys: twinning (at low T) and crystallographic slip (higher T's). For that goal, an advanced plasticity model was proposed. In the 4th part projectional algorithms for defect identification in zircaloy coatings are described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented in the 5th part. This integrative approach's value is in developing multi-faceted understanding of complex processes taking place in nuclear fuel rods. It helped identify several problems pertaining to the safe operations with nuclear fuel: limits of temperature that should be strictly obeyed in storage to retard zircaloy hydriding; understanding the benefits and limitations of coatings; developing in-depth understanding of Zr plasticity; developing original algorithms for defect identification in SiC-braided zircaloy. The obtained results will be useful for the nuclear industry.

Book excerpt: The corrosion rates of low-titanium zirconium alloys increased with titanmum content when exposed to water at 290 deg C or to 1 atm oxygen at 290, 350, 400, and 500 deg C. The scaling rate reached a maxmmum (approximately 3000 at 500 deg C and then decreased with increasing titanium content. Under the same conditions, pure zirconium and tmtanium had much lower weight gains, 10 and 4 mg/ dm/sup 2/ respectively. In oxygen at 500 deg C, the oxidation rate law was initially cubic or parabolic for alloys containing 3.75, 15.0, and 50.0 at.% Ti, and then changed to approximately a linear one. The transition times were 17, 7, and 54 min for the in the rate law and the rise in EMF and resistance appeared to be independent variables. The electrical changes were attributed to changes in defect structure, and the rate law ansitions were attributed to structural channges. The reilts provided an explanation for the maximum oxidation ite at 15 at.% Ti and for the differences in the influence of dditives on the corrosion rates of zirconium and titanium in high temperature water. Thc EMIF of the corrosion cell consisting of STAalloy /oxide! O/sup 2/! was a function of the resistance of the oxide layer. The 3.75 and l5.0 at.% Ti alloys had small EMF's and resistances inittally, but EMF and resistance increased appreciably and rapidly at times after the transition stage. The 50 at.% Ti alloy had a very small EMF which was relatmvely constant while the resistance showed a slight increase with time. (auth).

Because the nuclear industry is going to continue using advanced zirconium cladding materials in the foreseeable future, it become critical to gain fundamental understanding of the several interconnected problems. First, what are the thermodynamic and kinetic factors affecting the oxidation and hydrogen pick-up by these materials at normal, off-normal conditions, and in long-term storage? Secondly, what protective coatings (if any) could be used in order to gain extremely valuable time at off-normal conditions, e.g., when temperature exceeds the critical value of 2200°F? Thirdly, the kinetics of oxidation of such protective coating or braiding needs to be quantified. Lastly, even if some degree of success is achieved along this path, it is absolutely critical to have automated inspection algorithms allowing identifying defects of cladding as soon as possible. This work strives to explore these interconnected factors from the most advanced computational perspective, utilizing such modern techniques as first-principles atomistic simulations, computational thermodynamics of materials, diffusion modeling, and the morphological algorithms of image processing for defect identification. Consequently, it consists of the four parts dealing with these four problem areas preceded by the introduction and formulation of the studied problems. In the 1st part an effort was made to employ computational thermodynamics and ab initio calculations to shed light upon the different stages of oxidation of ziraloys (2 and 4), the role of microstructure optimization in increasing their thermal stability, and the process of hydrogen pick-up, both in normal working conditions and in long-term storage. The 2nd part deals with the need to understand the influence and respective roles of the two different plasticity mechanisms in Zr nuclear alloys: twinning (at low T) and crystallographic slip (higher T's). For that goal, a description of the advanced plasticity model is outlined featuring the non-associated flow rule in hcp materials including Zr. The 3rd part describes the kinetic theory of oxidation of the several materials considered to be perspective coating materials for Zr alloys: SiC and ZrSiO4. In the 4th part novel and advanced projectional algorithms for defect identification in zircaloy coatings are described. In so doing, the author capitalized on some 12 years of his applied industrial research in this area. Our conclusions and recommendations are presented in the 5th part of this work, along with the list of used literature and the scripts for atomistic, thermodynamic, kinetic, and morphological computations.

In the light of the present work this mechanism now requires some qualifications since growth has been observed in pure O/sub 2/ with impure grades of Zr. While duplex scaling runs have shown that gaseous impurities, mainly O/sub 2/ and N/sub 2/, do alter the scaling reactions in air, these data indicate that growth of impure material in O/ is not caused by these gaseous impurities. Therefore, it is now necessary to study the effects of other impurities in an effort to reconcile the growth in O/sub 2/ of impure Zr and the absence of growth of the purer Zr in O/sub 2/. (auth).

Book excerpt: Zircaloy-4, in three different metallurgical forms (stress relieved, recrystallized, and ?-quenched), was oxidized at 400°C, in steam, up to 95 days. For each sample, the fraction of tetragonal zirconia was measured by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. These two techniques show the presence of several zones containing tetragonal zirconia: a zone rich in the oxide near the metal-oxide interface and an other zones with lower concentrations in the rest of the pre-transition layers. For the post-transition samples, the external sublayer contains only a small amount of tetragonal zirconia.
