Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors examine the scaling of the peak divertor heat flux and total divertor plate power in partially detached divertor (PDD) discharges in DIII-D, as a function of input power and radiated power. The peak divertor heat flux in the attached plasma increases linearly with input power, but saturates in the detached cases. The total divertor plate power remains linear with input power in both the attached and detached plasmas. This is consistent with the fact that the heat flux peak is reduced from the attached case but other areas receive increased radiant heating from the detached plasma. The divertor plate radiant heating is linear with input power because the total radiated power from the entire plasma is a linear function of input power in both attached and detached plasma. In the private flux region, radiated heat flux absorbed on the target plate calculated from bolometer data is enough to account for the measured plate heating. Approximately half of the overall plate heating power in detached plasma is due to absorbed radiation. By mapping the divertor heat flux before and during the PDD to flux coordinates, and comparing with a flux mapping of inserted bolometer and tangential TV data, they have verified that the radiated power is emitted from the same flux surfaces on which heat flux is reduced.

Book excerpt: Strong support for the critical pressure gradient model for the heat flux width has been obtained, in that the measured separatrix pressure gradient lies below and scales similarly to the pressure gradient limit obtained from the ideal, infinite-n stability codes, BALOO and 2DX, in all cases that have been examined. Predictions of a heuristic drift model for the heat flux width are also in qualitative agreement with the measurements. We obtained these results by using an improved high rep-rate and higher edge spatial resolution Thomson scattering system on DIII-D to measure the upstream electron temperature and density profiles. In order to compare theory and experiment, profiles of density, temperature, and pressure for both electrons and ions are needed as well values of these quantitities at the separatrix. We also developed a simple method to identify a proxy for the separatrix.
Book Synopsis The Plasma Boundary of Magnetic Fusion Devices by : P.C Stangeby
Download or read book The Plasma Boundary of Magnetic Fusion Devices written by P.C Stangeby and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plasma Boundary of Magnetic Fusion Devices introduces the physics of the plasma boundary region, including plasma-surface interactions, with an emphasis on those occurring in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. The book covers plasma-surface interaction, Debye sheaths, sputtering, scrape-off layers, plasma impurities, recycling and control, 1D and 2D fluid and kinetic modeling of particle transport, plasma properties at the edge, diverter and limiter physics, and control of the plasma boundary. Divided into three parts, the book begins with Part 1, an introduction to the plasma boundary. The derivations are heuristic and worked problems help crystallize physical intuition, which is emphasized throughout. Part 2 provides an introduction to methods of modeling the plasma edge region and for interpreting computer code results. Part 3 presents a collection of essays on currently active research hot topics. With an extensive bibliography and index, this book is an invaluable first port-of-call for researchers interested in plasma-surface interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic Fusion Energy: From Experiments to Power Plants is a timely exploration of the field, giving readers an understanding of the experiments that brought us to the threshold of the ITER era, as well as the physics and technology research needed to take us beyond ITER to commercial fusion power plants. With the start of ITER construction, the world’s magnetic fusion energy (MFE) enterprise has begun a new era. The ITER scientific and technical (S&T) basis is the result of research on many fusion plasma physics experiments over a period of decades. Besides ITER, the scope of fusion research must be broadened to create the S&T basis for practical fusion power plants, systems that will continuously convert the energy released from a burning plasma to usable electricity, operating for years with only occasional interruptions for scheduled maintenance. Provides researchers in academia and industry with an authoritative overview of the significant fusion energy experiments Considers the pathway towards future development of magnetic fusion energy power plants Contains experts contributions from editors and others who are well known in the field

Book Synopsis Divertor Heat and Particle Flux Due to ELMs in DIII-D and ASDEX-Upgrade by :
Download or read book Divertor Heat and Particle Flux Due to ELMs in DIII-D and ASDEX-Upgrade written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors characterize the divertor target plate heat and particle fluxes that occur due to Edge-Localized-Modes (ELMs) during H-mode in DIII-D and ASDEX-Upgrade. During steady-state ELMing H-mode the fraction of main plasma stored energy lost with each ELM varies from 6% to 2% as input power increases above the H-mode power threshold. The ELM energy is deposited near the strikepoints on the divertor target plates in a fast time scale of[le] 1 ms. The spatial profile of the ELM heat pulse is flatter and broader, up to about a factor of 2, than that of the heat flux between ELMs. On ASDEX-Upgrade the inboard strike-point receives the greatest fraction, [ge] 75%, of ELM divertor heat flux, while on DIII-D the in/out split is nearly equal. The toroidal asymmetry of the heat pulse has produced a peaking factor on DIII-D of no more than 1.5. The particle flux, as measured by Langmuir probes, has also been found to be localized near the divertor strike-points. The increased particle flux during ELMs is a significant fraction of the total time-integrated divertor plate particle flux.

Book Synopsis Measurements of Non-axisymmetric Effects in the DIII-D Divertor by :
Download or read book Measurements of Non-axisymmetric Effects in the DIII-D Divertor written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-stationary toroidal asymmetries are observed in the DIII-D divertor heat flux and scrape-off layer (SOL) currents. Using the present DIII-D diagnostics asymmetries are seen much less frequently in single-null H-modes (5%) than in double-null H-modes (50%). Divertor heat flux asymmetries are characterized by toroidal variations in the radial profile (i.e., multiple or bifurcated peaks at some toroidal locations and single peaks at others) while SOL currents sometimes have a strongly bipolar toroidal structure. SOL current asymmetries are particularly large during Edge Localized Modes (ELMs). In some cases heat flux variations of as much as a factor of two are seen. The measurements reported here indicate that these asymmetries are best described by a model in which non-axisymmetric radial magnetic perturbations create magnetic islands in the plasma boundary and scrape-off layer which then cause toroidal variation in the divertor heat flux and the scrape-off layer currents.

Book Synopsis Divertor-plasma Studies on DIII-D. by :
Download or read book Divertor-plasma Studies on DIII-D. written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an overview of recent results from divertor physics studies in DIII-D. Heat flux measurements at input power levels up to 20 MW show that steady divertor heat loads of up to 4 MW/m2 are obtained in H-mode discharges with ELMs. No carbon blooms are observed. The heat flux profile is highly peaked at the outside strike point in single-null discharges, and is up/down asymmetric in double-null discharges. Recent experiments with gas injection below the X-point have demonstrated a factor of two reduction in the peak divertor heat flux for H-mode plasmas at these power levels. These heat flux data, along with measurements of the n{sub e} and T{sub e} profiles at the divertor are being used to help interpret the first reported measurements of the erosion profile for a set of graphite divertor tiles exposed to several months of high power tokamak operation. We have now modified the divertor hardware in order to carry out experiments with divertor biasing, baffling, and pumping. 26 refs., 8 figs.
