Book excerpt: "In the vein of Yellow Bird and Highway of Tears, a powerful and illuminating investigation into the disappearance of the young and pregnant Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, highlighting the shocking epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in America and the country's deplorable inaction. In the summer of 2017, twenty-two-year-old Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind vanished. A week after the pregnant woman disappeared, police arrested the white couple who lived upstairs from Savanna and emerged from their apartment carrying an infant girl. The baby was Savanna's, but she would not be found until her body was pulled from the Red River days later. This horrifying and unimaginable crime sent shockwaves through the country and helped bring to light the overwhelming sexual and physical violence Native American women and girls have endured since the country's colonization. With pathos and respect, Searching for Savanna confronts the history and attitudes towards these women and why our government has turned its back on the countless victims by highlighting this specific tragic case. Featuring in-depth interviews, personal accounts, and trial analysis, this is much more than a true crime book, it is also a call to action for those who cannot speak for themselves"--

Book excerpt: Can this free-spirited human overcome her fears and give her grizzly shifter lover a second chance? As a marketing executive for a multinational hotel corporation, Megan Larch has seen her share of hotel rooms and loved her share of men. She has a type, and the extremely buff American guest at Hotel Safari isn’t it. While she’ll never turn up her nose at a good shag, she came to the lodge to visit old friends, not make new ones. Xander Simpson is a grizzly bear shifter on the prowl for a new adventure. He quit his job in Minneapolis to try his hand at wildlife photography on the Kenyan savanna. Megan, a sexy British redhead, doesn’t fit into his plans, but she stirs emotions in him he never expected from a human woman. When Megan learns her friends have been hiding an age-old secret, she must overcome her feelings of betrayal, or she could lose her chance with the one man who could finally convince her to settle down. *** This elephant shifter never thought he’d fall in love with a spoiled rich girl, but he’ll do anything to convince her she’s his mate. Elizabeth Canterwell has closed herself off to love since Colin Kemboi rejected her. Now, she has run off to southern Thailand to forget him and find pleasure in the arms of another. But she still has her position in London's cutthroat social scene to consider. Chon is an elephant shifter with the body of a fighter and the mind of an intellectual. Hotel Safari Thailand has strict rules about employees fraternizing with guests, but when he meets Elizabeth, nothing can draw him away...except Elizabeth’s own refusal to fraternize with the hired help. Will he break down her walls and show her the joys of forbidden love in the Thai jungle? Savanna Bear and Thai Rebound are vacation romances with heat, heart, and hard bodies! These steamy stand-alones are multicultural shifter romances with a little bit of spice and a happily-ever-after. **This book includes the steamy paranormal romance novellas, Savanna Bear and Thai Rebound, previously published separately.**

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Yaka of Southwestern Zaire, infertility is a tear in the fabric of life, and the Khita fertility ritual is a trusted way of reweaving the damaged strands. In Weaving the Threads of Life Rene Devisch offers an extended analysis of the Khita cult, which leads to an original account of the workings of ritual healing. Drawing on many years among urban and rural Yaka, Devisch analyzes their understanding of existence as a fabric of firmly but delicately interwoven threads of nature, body, and society. The fertility healing ritual calls forth forces, feelings, and meanings that allow women to rejoin themselves to the complex pattern of social and cosmic life. These elaborate rites—whether simulating mortal agony and rebirth, gestation and delivery, or flowering and decay; using music and dance, steambath or massage, dream messages or scarification—are not based on symbols of traditional beliefs. Rather, Devisch shows, the rites themselves generate forces and meaning, creating and shaping the cosmic, physical, and social world of their participants. In contrast to current theoretical methods such as postmodern or symbolical interpretation, Devisch's praxiological approach is unique in also using phenomenological insights into the intent and results of anthropological fieldwork. This innovative work will have ramifications beyond African studies, reaching into the anthropology of medicine and the body, comparative religious history, and women's studies.

Just as typically, when they imagine a savanna, they visualize the African plains, rather than those dry woodlands and grasslands found in the Neotropics. These same preconceptions can be found among scientists, as these ne
