Book excerpt: Despite existing research on the process of creating online courses in higher education, little research concentrates directly on the social exchange between instructional designers (or e-Learning professionals) and online faculty (or subject-matter experts) during the online course design and development. The parts of their collaboration may exist in current research literature, but not as a central focus. This study looks to fill the gap of what indicators impact satisfaction during this collaborative exchange between instructional designers and online faculty. This dissertation used a cross sectional survey to collect nationwide data to measure satisfaction of collaborative online course development. T-tests provided inferential statistics of both instructional designers and online faculty across topics of satisfaction. The text results produced significant differences in satisfaction between instructional designers and online faculty. The data also displayed satisfaction differences between non-collaborating faculty and collaborating faculty. When divided by roles (IDs and faculty), there were significant differences in race, gender, US region, institutional type and education level. Issues of time, compensation, and satisfaction over time played major roles in satisfaction of the collaborative exchange during online course development. This study will not only start the conversation through research on this topic, but it will also contribute to future research on similar topics.
