The factors examined in this study included demographic characteristics such as age, years in practice and employment status. Other factors examined include general health, perceived stress, salary, vacation, scheduled hours, flexibility, benefits and opportunities for advancement. The tool used in this study was a demographic survey combined with a 67-item questionnaire developed by the researcher. The questionnaire was adapted from the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10), The General Health Survey (GHQ 28) and The McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS). Forty-five participants took part in this study. Each participant was currently a graduate nursing student. The study revealed that graduate nurses in the Los Angeles metropolitan area were less satisfied overall with diminished perceptions of health and increased stress particularly at 6-10 years of experience. The findings also suggest that work- related stress prevention programs would promote satisfaction attainment among nursing staff and potentially improve organizational outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that the nursing shortage is begging to affect hospitals across the country, and that nurses are quickly becoming unable to attend to the needs of all of their patients. Researchers have concluded that some of the major causes of the shortage include the creation of new legislature that has given more people access to healthcare, as well as smaller amounts of student enrolling into nursing programs, and the formation of unhealthy work environments. The shortage has led to increased turnover rates, lower nursing school admissions, and decreased efficiency through the creation of more hostile working environments. Research has shown that creating a healthier more stable work environment can increase efficiency, as nurses are more likely to work harder in a setting in which they are more comfortable (Morgan,2009). Implementing recognition systems into hospitals that will take notice of nursing achievements will work towards creating this healthier environment. Recognition of achievement will increase nursing satisfaction and cause them to enjoy performing their duties more, thus creating more efficiency. This is to be done through questionnaires gauging how nurses perceive this system, alongside pamphlets educating them on all of the systems workings. After the opinions have been gathered the system will be set in place through the use of points or other sorts of methods to show achievement. More questionnaires will be given to both nurses and patients to determine if the system has had a positive impact on the level of care that is provided. This proposal will serve to describe the implementation procedures of adding a recognition system, as well as how it will aid in decreasing the effects of the nursing shortage. If nurses feel more appreciated for their work, they will work harder and more efficiently.

Book excerpt: Hospitals and nursing homes are responding to changes in the health care system by modifying staffing levels and the mix of nursing personnel. But do these changes endanger the quality of patient care? Do nursing staff suffer increased rates of injury, illness, or stress because of changing workplace demands? These questions are addressed in Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes, a thorough and authoritative look at today's health care system that also takes a long-term view of staffing needs for nursing as the nation moves into the next century. The committee draws fundamental conclusions about the evolving role of nurses in hospitals and nursing homes and presents recommendations about staffing decisions, nursing training, measurement of quality, reimbursement, and other areas. The volume also discusses work-related injuries, violence toward and abuse of nursing staffs, and stress among nursing personnelâ€"and examines whether these problems are related to staffing levels. Included is a readable overview of the underlying trends in health care that have given rise to urgent questions about nurse staffing: population changes, budget pressures, and the introduction of new technologies. Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes provides a straightforward examination of complex and sensitive issues surround the role and value of nursing on our health care system.

Book excerpt: In the recent years work has become more and more taxing and the stress induced escalates correspondingly. Combine that with a profession that breathes in illness and death, the marshes get murkier. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of selected determinants of stress on the job satisfaction levels of the nursing staff. The target were the nurses of private hospitals in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The stress determinants in the study were; Responsibility Pressures, Role Conflict, Job vs. Non-Job factors and Workload. The aim of this study is to highlight the problem areas which would allow the management to focus on improving the work conditions of the care-givers. Further, this area of study has a great potential for further research on other dimensions of stress with different sets of samples from the private to the public and across the geography of Pakistan.
