Book excerpt: The thermal and dynamic properties of water bodies are important factors affecting the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer which stores and transports energy and mass. The storage and heat transfer of lakes play an essential role in energy and water exchanges with the atmosphere. At high latitudes, the effects of lake ice on climate mostly occur at the local/regional scale, with the degree of influence dependent on the magnitude, timing, location, duration of ice cover and the size of the water body. Ground-based lake temperature and ice observations have been used to investigate the role of lakes in the weather and climate, and the response of lakes to climate. However, in the last two to three decades, it has been observed that the number of ground-based observations, lake ice in particular, has been decreasing dramatically in several countries across the northern hemisphere. In this context, remotely sensed earth observations represent a practical tool in support of the scientific and operational modeling communities, permitting to monitor Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) and ice cover. Data assimilation methods have been used widely to solve the initial value problem in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. There is a variety of users and applications of space-borne observations in NWP systems; however, not much attention has been paid on the assimilation of remotely-sensed LSWT data in pre-operational NWP environments for improvement of the weather forecast using the optimal interpolation method. This thesis aimed to demonstrate how retrieved remotely-sensed LSWT observations can improve the representation of lake-atmosphere interactions in NWP models. More specifically, LSWT observations were used to improve the representation of lake surface state in the High Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM), a three-dimensional numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. To attain this goal, satellite-derived LSWT observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) sensors onboard the Terra/Aqua and ENVISAT satellites, respectively, were first evaluated against in-situ measurements collected by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) for a selection of large to medium-size lakes during the open-water season. Results show a good agreement between MODIS and in-situ measurements from 22 Finnish lakes, with a mean bias of -1.13 °C determined over five open water seasons (2007-2011). Evaluation of MODIS during an overlapping period (2007-2009) with the AATSR-L2 product currently distributed by the European Space Agency (ESA) shows a mean bias error of -0.93 °C for MODIS and a warm mean bias of 1.08 °C for AATSR-L2. Two additional LSWT retrieval algorithms were applied to produce more accurate AATSR products. The algorithms use ESA's AATSR-L1B brightness temperature product to generate new L2 products: one based on Key et al. (1997) and the other on Prata (2002) with a finer resolution water mask than used in the creation of the AATSR-L2 product distributed by ESA. The accuracies of LSWT retrievals are improved with the Key and Prata algorithms with biases of 0.78 °C and -0.11 °C, respectively, compared to the original AATSR-L2 product (3.18 °C). The impact of remotely-sensed LSWT observations in the analysis of lake surface state of HIRLAM forecasting system was then investigated. Data assimilation experiments were performed with the HIRLAM model. Selected thermal remote-sensing LSWT observations provided by MODIS and AATSR sensors were included into the assimilation. The domain of the experiments, which focused on two winters (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), covered northern Europe. Validation of the resulting objective analyses against independent observations demonstrated that the description of the lake surface state can be improved by the introduction of space-borne LSWT observations, compared to the result of pure prognostic parameterizations or assimilation of the available limited number of in-situ lake temperature observations. Further development of the data assimilation methods and solving of several practical issues were found to be necessary in order to fully benefit from the space-borne observations of lake surface state for the improvement of the operational weather forecast. Lastly, the lake-specific autocorrelation function based on LSWT remotely sensed observations was approximated in HIRLAM. A new autocorrelation function of lake pairs was approximated and compared against the original function utilized in current version of HIRLAM to investigate potential improvements demonstrated through HIRLAM sensitivity experiments. The autocorrelation function is calculated based on distance and lake depth differences for each lake pairs. Results show that large lakes are more sensitive to the impact of the autocorrelation. These results also suggest that the high concentrated observations can improve the enhanced result; however, ground-based observations of LSWT are barely available for NWP applications. Overall, results from this thesis clearly demonstrate the benefits of assimilating space-borne LSWT observations into a weather forecasting system such as HIRLAM, and that comprehensive assimilation of LSWT observations can improve NWP results.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is part of the long-term research towards building a complete surface water representation in the land surface model, in order to quantify the spatial and temporal variations of surface water bodies, especially lakes, and to further understand the role of lakes in the climate system. Changes in lake water storage reflect variations in climate such as changes in precipitation, land surface evaporation, net river discharge, and groundwater storage. However, owing to the lack of a comprehensive surface water observing system, continental-to-global-scale changes in surface water heights and inundation extent remain poorly understood. In the previous study, a Catchment-based Hydrologic And Routing Modeling System (CHARMS) was developed to be run on a catchment-based modeling template, which was modified from the grid-based National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Land Model (CLM). In the CHARMS model, the catchment-based CLM was coupled to a catchment-based river routing model, which simulated the movement of water through river channels and floodplains. However, the lake component was not included in the CHARMS routing system. Moreover, in the CLM model, lakes are considered to have a globally consistent depth of 50m and a constant volume. In this dissertation, a lake model (CHARMS-lake) is implemented in the routing path of CHARMS, with the objective of better representing the surface water system in the land surface model. In Chapter 2 of this dissertation, the CHARMS model is modified. In the previous version of CHARMS model, an explicit representation of lake bodies was missing, with the lakes either ignored from the surface water system or kept constant in storage. In this chapter the routing path for CHARMS is manipulated by adding lakes into the river network. Modeled lake levels for Lake Superior and Lake Victoria are compared with the altimetry data, and the outflow discharge from lake basins is also compared with the model case which assumes no lake in the basin. The performance of NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) detecting changes in land water mass is evaluated in Chapter 3, to test its ability of capturing the hydrologic signal from lakes. After removing the hydrologic leakage from the surrounding area, the gridded GRACE TELLUS RL 05 product is scaled over the 16 largest lakes in the world, and compared with the altimetry data for the period of 2003 to 2010. Statistical analysis is performed to find factors that significantly influence the quality of GRACE observations over lakes. Chapter 4 of the dissertation studies the physical properties of lakes, such as thermal expansion, as well as lake bathymetry, in order to better understand their impact on lake level variations. The high resolution bathymetry data for the Great Lakes is integrated and the hypsometric curves for the five lakes are plotted. Thermal expansion of the lakes is estimated using the MODIS surface water temperature data for 6 lakes in two different climate zones. The ratio of thermal expansion to the total amount of lake level change is calculated, indicating that in the tropical regions the impact of thermal expansion can be ignored. This CHARMS-lake model will provide a better understanding of the global hydrologic cycle, and is expected to be coupled to a global scale atmospheric model to study the feedbacks between climate and the terrestrial surface water system.

In this book, we review some of the recent contributions, highlighting how satellite data are used to inform Earth surface model development (vegetation state and seasonality, soil moisture conditions, surface temperature and turbulent fluxes, land-use change detection, agricultural indicators and irrigation) when moving towards global km-scale resolutions.

For several decades, forecasts with lead times of a few days for weather and other environmental phenomena have yielded valuable information to improve decision-making across all sectors of society. Developing the capability to forecast environmental conditions and disruptive events several weeks and months in advance could dramatically increase the value and benefit of environmental predictions, saving lives, protecting property, increasing economic vitality, protecting the environment, and informing policy choices. Over the past decade, the ability to forecast weather and climate conditions on subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescales, i.e., two to fifty-two weeks in advance, has improved substantially. Although significant progress has been made, much work remains to make S2S predictions skillful enough, as well as optimally tailored and communicated, to enable widespread use. Next Generation Earth System Predictions presents a ten-year U.S. research agenda that increases the nation's S2S research and modeling capability, advances S2S forecasting, and aids in decision making at medium and extended lead times.

Book excerpt: Changes to ice cover on lakes throughout the northern landscape has been established as an indicator of climate change and variability. These changes are expected to have implications for both human and environmental systems. Additionally, monitoring lake ice cover is required to enable more reliable weather forecasting across lake-rich northern latitudes. Currently the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) monitors lakes using RADARSAT-2 SAR (synthetic aperture radar) and optical imagery through visual interpretation, with total lake ice cover reported weekly as a fraction out of ten. An automated method of classification would allow for more detailed records to be delivered operationally. In this research, the Iterative Region Growing using Semantics (IRGS) approach has been employed to perform ice-water classification on 61 RADARSAT-2 scenes of Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake over a three year period. This approach first locally segments homogeneous regions in an image, then merges similar regions into classes across the entire scene. These classes are manually labelled by the user, however automated labelling capability is currently in development. An accuracy assessment has been performed on the classification results, comparing outcomes with user-generated reference data as well as the CIS fraction reported at the time of image acquisition. The overall average accuracy of the IRGS method for this dataset is 92%, demonstrating the potential of this semi-automated method to provide detailed and reliable lake ice cover information.

Book excerpt: This book employs a suite of remotely sensed products and advanced technologies to provide the first comprehensive space-based sensing of Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater lake that supports a livelihood of more than 42 million people, modulates regional climate, but faces myriads of challenges. Proper understanding of the lake and changes in its physical dynamics (e.g., water level, shorelines and areal dynamics) resulting from the impacts of climate variation and climate change as well as anthropogenic (e.g., hydropower and irrigation) is important for its management as well as for strategic development before, during and after climate extremes (e.g., floods and droughts) in order to inform policy formulations, planning and mitigation measures. Owing to its sheer size, and lack of research resources commitment by regional governments that hamper its observations, however, it is a daunting task to undertake studies on Lake Victoria relying solely on in-situ “boots on the ground” measurements, which are sparse, missing in most cases, inconsistent or restricted by governmental red tapes. To unlock the potentials of Lake Victoria, this book argues for the removal of obsolete Nile treaties signed between Britain, Egypt and Sudan in the 1920s and 1950s, which prohibits its utilization by the upstream countries. The book is useful to those in water resources management and policy formulations, hydrologists, environmentalists, engineers and researchers. In a unique cross-disciplinary approach, the Book articulates the various climatic impacts and explanations from natural and anthropogenic origins, which affected Lake Victoria and its vicinity, including the drastic increase and depletion of water level in the Lake and dams, floods and droughts, water quality/security, crop health, food security, and economic implications.
