Book excerpt: Originally published in 1941, this is a biography of the former German Chancellor, former head of the German spy network in America, and one of Adolf Hitler’s highest officials, Franz von Papen (1879-1969). “In this volume the reader will not find a single love letter, nor an abundance of intimate details about strictly personal incidents. “Fortunately enough, in Franz von Papen’s case the lack of confidential gossip doesn’t obscure the understanding of the human figure. As it will be seen, he is the par excellence political man who has found a complete self-expression in the practice of diplomacy and politics. It would be vain to try to grasp the full nature of Julius Caesar without knowing what pleasure and vice, what the senses meant to him. Many smaller but important historic figures would never yield the secret of their personalities but for the information we possess about their greed for gold or women, about their appetites. “Ever since his early manhood, Franz von Papen has hungered for one exclusive object: power. The latter being the very essence of politics, this book is a political biography. It studies the awakening of an individual to the call of power, and the course of his strenuous and tortuous struggle for it on domestic as well as foreign forums. Also, since Franz von Papen’s career has transcended national barriers, the story of his life is indissolubly tied to that other, a collective manifestation of the will to power, whose aim is the domination of the world by a nation.”

As Satan begins to discover the meaning of being a man, the satanic aspects of mankind become ever more apparent to him. Leonid Andreyev was a Russian author active in the beginning of the twentieth century, famous mostly for his plays and short fiction, and often portrayed as Russia’s equivalent to Edgar Allan Poe. Satan’s Diary was his last work, completed just a few days before his death in 1919. This edition was translated by his previous collaborator Herman Bernstein and published in 1920. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was big . . . the biggest of the litter . . . big enough to wrestle bears, and he did, two, maybe more; but he killed many. When he woke up in that black inky night he couldn’t see, thought he was blind, and had a massive hangover from his Daddy’s Cherry Jump moonshine. A buzzard had died in his mouth and with it came rotten dog breath. A headache like someone had hit him with a pole axe made him feel like he was dead, dead as four-o’clock. And did he smell! Wow! His torn bib overalls were soaked in sour mash. Other than not knowing where he was, he still thought he was alright, and that too was a problem. Was there any hope or any salvation? Luckily, he had been weather hardened by war. He stood up and he tired to walk, but ran into something. It knocked him down. When he fell, he heard something rattle. It was a trace chain attached to a leather dog collar around his neck. But in the inky dark he couldn’t see his hand in front of him. He got up again and found the trace chain wrapped around a tree, and locked. Shocked, he screamed out, “Goddamn! I’m chained to a tree,” then screamed louder, “They have chained me to a tree like a wild cur dog!” Now mad as hornet with his stinger busted, he felt around and found something else about the tree. This time he screamed even louder, “Son of a bitch! It’s my goddamn tree! Who in the hell would chain me to my own tree?” He sat back down against the family tree stunned, and then realized; “It’s got to be my . . . family. Chained me like a goddamn cur dog to a tree. But which one of them would have the nerve to do this . . . to ME?” Then he realized it could be only one person. He stood up and screamed, “Mama! Then he fell down again, pounded the ground, cried like his heart tore out. He got up off the ground, went into a wild-man’s rage then fainted with exhaustion. Then he got sick, tried to walk, but threw up all over himself. And the chain snatched him back and down into his vomit; it was all over him like those bugs. He pounded the ground with his fist, wondering how in the world he had gotten here and where he was. Again and again, he got up. Each time he tried to walk in another direction, but the chain snatched him off his feet and back down on the ground and into his rotten vomit. It didn’t matter what direction he walked. Finally exhausted, he couldn’t get back on his feet. Still he kept asking himself, “Where in the hell am I, and who in the hell put this collar on me?” All night he shouted and wallowed in his vomit like an itchy, old, fat hog taking a bath in new mud. He heard no one come in the dark, silent, black night. Thank God! His vomit smell finally ran the goddamn bugs off his body and away. AUTHOR REVIEWS "Another one of the best of the best; has an eye for writing more good novels. Just Great! What can a person do when they read a story like this one? You have the knack for telling stories from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just keep it up and I’ll keep looking for another book." -Hyway94, Everywhere, USA- "I like the back-story (flash back) that leads in. Very well written and has great flow about something I know nothing about." - Isle of Travey, Auckland 1172 New Zealand- "Another highly written book, written in your unique style, and I loved the antics in this one. You are so gifted to have such a unique spelling ability." -rivki1111, USA- "This is the very best chapter (#54) of your novel. Of course, I am so glad the villain got his come up-ins. Dredd reminded me of one of my ex-husbands. You’ve got a great book here." -Oatmeal (Camille Whitman), USA- "You have a talent for realistic character, engaging dialogs

Book excerpt: In this, the first book on English fantasy, Colin Manlove shows that for all its immense diversity, English fantasy can best be understood in terms of its strong national character, rather than as an international genre. Showing its development from Beowulf to Blake, the author describes English fantasy's modern growth through secondary world, metaphysical, emotive, comic, subversive, and children's fantasy. In them all England has led the world, with authors as different as Chaucer, Lewis Carroll, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Salman Rushdie.

An unexpected hit upon its release in 1941, it helped establish the careers of John Huston and Humphrey Bogart while also helping both to transform the detective genre of movies and to create film noir. This volume includes an introduction by its editor and a shot-by-shot continuity of the film, as well as essays on its production, on literary and film traditions it drew upon, and on its reputation and influence over the last half century. Included are reviews from the time of the film's original release, the enthusiastic French response in 1946 that helped define film noir, and a close formal anaylsis of the film. In addition, the volume contains a comparison of this version to earlier film versions of the Dashiell Hammett novel, and helpful explorations of cultural, historical, and psychoanalytic issues. Like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon has attained iconic status; this volume will contribute to the pleasure its many fans find in viewing the film again and again. William Luhr is a professor of English at St. Peter's College in New Jersey. He is the author of Raymond Chandler and Film and co-author of Blake Edwards and other books.

Book excerpt: BORN AGAIN TRUTHS Born into the bondage of the LDS Religion-- Born-again of the Spirit through God's Mercy and Grace "When I studied LDS history and doctrines against the Bible, seeking truth to help my questioning child, I found deceits and occult origins that would lead me out as well. I took my petitions to God, pouring out my heart to Him, and pleading for direction. I could see that I had caused God sorrow. I told Him that I was sorry for following man and promised Him that "from this day forward, it will be me, Jesus Christ, and You, God" (speaking to the Father.) Miraculously, God allowed me to witness my rebirth, as He instantly peeled the bondage I had been under, off of me before my eyes! A grayish matter fell away from me, heavy toward the ground, then dissipated. I heard my lungs fill up with a gasp as God breathed into me. A brightness then immersed me as God filled me with the Holy Spirit. Such joy, peace, and a feeling of freedom I had never known enveloped me! The scenery about me became vivid--the outlines of the mountainous terrain were instantly crisp and clear. I knew that my eyes had been opened; I was forever changed, and there would be no going back. God heard my feeble prayer, has saved me from spiritual blindness, given me new birth, and sealed me His by the Holy Spirit--forever!" -Author Kay is a wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoys family activities, reading, painting, photography, hunting, fishing, and camping.

The Satanic Screen documents all of Satan’s cinematic incarnations, covering not only the horror genre but also a whole range of sub-genres including hardcore porn, mondo and underground film. Heavily illustrated with rare still photographs, posters and arcana, the book investigates the perennial symbiotic interplay between Satanic cinema and leading occultists, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the Black Arts and their continuing representation in populist culture. Revised and updated since its first acclaimed publication in 2001, Schreck’s study of the diabolical in film has since become a widely referenced standard work on the subject, enriched by Schreck's own personal engagement with magic and spiritual practice, which provides cineastes and sorcerers alike a veritable Encyclopedia Satanica of one of the oldest and most culturally profound genres in motion picture history.
