Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In SAS Statistics by Example, Ron Cody offers up a cookbook approach for doing statistics with SAS. Structured specifically around the most commonly used statistical tasks or techniques--for example, comparing two means, ANOVA, and regression--this book provides an easy-to-follow, how-to approach to statistical analysis not found in other books. For each statistical task, Cody includes heavily annotated examples using ODS Statistical Graphics procedures such as SGPLOT, SGSCATTER, and SGPANEL that show how SAS can produce the required statistics. Also, you will learn how to test the assumptions for all relevant statistical tests. Major topics featured include descriptive statistics, one- and two-sample tests, ANOVA, correlation, linear and multiple regression, analysis of categorical data, logistic regression, nonparametric techniques, and power and sample size. This is not a book that teaches statistics. Rather, SAS Statistics by Example is perfect for intermediate to advanced statistical programmers who know their statistics and want to use SAS to do their analyses. This book is part of the SAS Press program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers classic as well as cutting-edge topics on the analysis of clinical trial data in biomedical and psychosocial research and discusses each topic in an expository and user-friendly fashion. The intent of the book is to provide an overview of the primary statistical and data analytic issues associated with each of the selected topics, followed by a discussion of approaches for tackling such issues and available software packages for carrying out analyses. While classic topics such as survival data analysis, analysis of diagnostic test data and assessment of measurement reliability are well known and covered in depth by available topic-specific texts, this volume serves a different purpose: it provides a quick introduction to each topic for self-learning, particularly for those who have not done any formal coursework on a given topic but must learn it due to its relevance to their multidisciplinary research. In addition, the chapters on these classic topics will reflect issues particularly relevant to modern clinical trials such as longitudinal designs and new methods for analyzing data from such study designs. The coverage of these topics provides a quick introduction to these important statistical issues and methods for addressing them. As with the classic topics, this part of the volume on modern topics will enable researchers to grasp the statistical methods for addressing these emerging issues underlying modern clinical trials and to apply them to their research studies.

Book excerpt: With new student assessments and teacher evaluation schemes in the planning or early implementation phases, this book takes a step back to examine the ideological and historical grounding, potential benefits, scholarly evidence, and ethical basis for the new generation of test based accountability measures. After providing the political and cultural contexts for the rise of the testing accountability movement in the 1960s that culminated almost forty years later in No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top, this book then moves on to provide a policy history and social policy analysis of value-added testing in Tennessee that is framed around questions of power relations, winners, and losers. In examining the issues and exercise of power that are sustained in the long-standing policy of standardized testing in schools, this work provides a big picture perspective on assessment practices over time in the U. S.; by examining the rise of value-added assessment in Tennessee, a fine-grained and contemporary case is provided within that larger context. The last half of the book provides a detailed survey of the research based critiques of value-added methodology, while detailing an aggressive marketing campaign to make value-added modeling (VAM) a central component of reform strategies following NCLB. The last chapter and epilogue place the continuation of test-based accountability practices within the context of an emerging pushback against privatization, high stakes testing, and other education reforms. This book will be useful to a wide audience, including teachers, parents, school leaders, policymakers, researchers, and students of educational history, policy, and politics.

Book excerpt: Additive Manufacturing of Aerospace Composite Structures: Fabrication and Reliability introduces the reader to the current state of technologies involved in processing and design of polymer-reinforced fiber composites using additive manufacturing's automated fiber placement methods, through ten seminal SAE International papers. Currently, the material layup strategy in terms of process selection and manufacturability is usually not prioritized in the design phase. Engineers do not have a good way to see how their design choices can affect the manufacturing process beyond their initial structural-level considerations. The result is typically a large amount of experimental testing necessary to qualify the materials and structures typified in the classical building-block approach. Such an environment makes mistakes difficult to solve and, should redesign be required, obtaining reliable information is hard to piece together. Additive Manufacturing of Aerospace Composite Structures: Fabrication and Reliability approaches the question of quality in these structures from a hands-on, solution-driven perspective.

Book excerpt: The social lives of the peoples of the Balkans have long stimulated the imaginations of their northern European neighbors. These peoples and places have anthropological traditions of their own, shaped initially by nationalist movements and, later, by socialism and other political constraints. From an anthropological perspective, this book explores the region between Greece and Slovenia, when political pressures were strongest in the era of the Cold War. Yet, the environments were by no means uniformly repressive. The study provides indispensable insights for new generations pursuing innovative research agendas in this region in the new century. It raises deeper issues about the boundaries and substance of the anthropological endeavor. (Series: Halle Studies in the Anthropology of Eurasia - Vol. 29)
