Book excerpt: It is the purpose of this study to examine the subject-matter of those English dramas of 1900-1912 which portray serious action and produce tragic effect. In this study all purely aesthetic questions are ignored. The language medium in which the drama is expressed is considered only as it constitutes a question of characterization. Structure is ignored entirely. All considerations of the drama's suitability for stage production are ignored except as these are questions concerning plausibility and effectiveness of characterization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovid is today best known for his grand epic, Metamorphoses, and elegiac works like the Ars Amatoria and Heroides. Yet he also wrote a Medea, now unfortunately lost. This play kindled in him a lifelong interest in the genre of tragedy, which informed his later poetry and enabled him to continue his career as a tragedian – if only on the page instead of the stage. This book surveys tragic characters, motifs and modalities in the Heroides and the Metamorphoses. In writing love letters, Ovid's heroines and heroes display their suffering in an epistolary theater. In telling transformation stories, Ovid offers an exploded view of the traditional theater, although his characters never stray too far from their dramatic origins. Both works constitute an intratextual network of tragic stories that anticipate the theatrical excesses of Seneca and reflect the all-encompassing spirit of Roman imperium.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sappho and Phaon: A Tragedy This volume constitutes the text of Mr. Harrison Grey Fiske's production of Sappho and Phaon for Madame Kalich and her company, and consists of that main portion of my published play entitled T he Tragedy. The other portions - Prologue, In duction, Prelude, Interludes, and Epilogue - which form an archaeological setting for The Tragedy, or play proper, it has been decided in the present pro duction to omit; not because they are considered by manager or author as impractical for use in the theatre, or as disproportionate in relation to the whole, but because the results of their inclusion were not deemed sufficiently predictable to warrant their pro duction at this time. And in this decision the author has heartily concurred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century.
