Book excerpt: Excerpt from Santiago De Cuba and Its District (1607-1640): Villaverde, Sanchez De Moya Garcia Nabia, Velasco, Fonseca Betancur, Azevedo, Amezqueta Quijano, Roca De Borja The following sketch of the history of Santiago de Cuba and its district, between the years 1607 and 1640, is unsatisfactory in every respect. The author's work at Seville, in the course of which this study was a bye - pro duct, was interrupted in July, 1917, for the duration of the war. The tranquil thread of investigation was broken by a livelier interest in nearer wars than those of the seventeenth century; and now, a busy year later, the writer's memory, being blurred with new impressions, falls short when called upon to aid in revising and corre lating the facts herewith set forth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work resituates the Spanish Caribbean as an extension of the Luso-African Atlantic world from the late sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century, when the union of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns facilitated a surge in the transatlantic slave trade. After the catastrophic decline of Amerindian populations on the islands, two major African provenance zones, first Upper Guinea and then Angola, contributed forced migrant populations with distinct experiences to the Caribbean. They played a dynamic role in the social formation of early Spanish colonial society in the fortified port cities of Cartagena de Indias, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Panama City and their semirural hinterlands. David Wheat is the first scholar to establish this early phase of the "Africanization" of the Spanish Caribbean two centuries before the rise of large-scale sugar plantations. With African migrants and their descendants comprising demographic majorities in core areas of Spanish settlement, Luso-Africans, Afro-Iberians, Latinized Africans, and free people of color acted more as colonists or settlers than as plantation slaves. These ethnically mixed and economically diversified societies constituted a region of overlapping Iberian and African worlds, while they made possible Spain's colonization of the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: Havana in the 1550s was a small coastal village with a very limited population that was vulnerable to attack. By 1610, however, under Spanish rule it had become one of the best-fortified port cities in the world and an Atlantic center of shipping, commerce, and shipbuilding. Using all available local Cuban sources, Alejandro de la Fuente provides the first examination of the transformation of Havana into a vibrant Atlantic port city and the fastest-growing urban center in the Americas in the late sixteenth century. He shows how local ambitions took advantage of the imperial design and situates Havana within the slavery and economic systems of the colonial Atlantic.
