Book excerpt: The history of Santa Rosa County is closely associated with wood and water. Harvesting of the huge virgin pine trees that covered the area attracted industry and labor. Streams and rivers powered the machinery used to harvest the timber and also provided the means of transport. The sawmills, shipyards, turpentine stills, and related industries made Santa Rosa County the most industrialized county in Florida prior to the Civil War. After the war, the county rebuilt from the damage done not by raiding Yankee troops, but by retreating Confederates. The whine of the steam saw signaled the beginning of an era of great prosperity, an era that saw Milton build some of its most famous buildings and prominent businesses.

This book was released on 2017-03-19 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Santa Rosa, the Early Days is the fifth book in a series about Santa Rosa, the railroad community located in Guadalupe county, written by the author. Present day Santa Rosa owes its existence to the coming of the Rock Island & Chicago railroad into the area in 1901. The new town of Santa Rosa came into existence with the construction of the new railroad north of old Santa Rosa, the community founded by Don Celso Baca in the last quarter of the 1800s. Santa Rosa consists of a series of short vignettes taken from early newspapers articles, mostly from old New Mexico newspapers, though there are also vignettes based on articles from out of state newspapers. Most of the vignettes cover the time frame from 1900 to 1920, though there are several that extend into the 1930s. The newspaper articles are valuable in providing a window into the rich and colorful past of today's Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa also has one lengthier section consisting of general information columns derived from the old newspapers. The columns contain information about the people who called Santa Rosa home and their everyday life, including their work, religious and social activities. There are also many period photographs that help illustrate many of the vignettes. The photographs provide excellent documentation of the Santa Rosa that existed during that period. They also show that one picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

Book excerpt: Book II of Santa Rosa, A Pictorial History is a continuation of the first Santa Rosa pictorial book published in 2012. Included in Book II are additional pictures used to trace the history of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Many of the pictures are rare period photos dating back to the early 1900s. Book II also includes many early newspaper accounts from the El Paso Herald, the Santa Fe New Mexican, and several early Albuquerque newspapers. The news articles date back to as early 1901 and the coming of the railroad to that area of the Territory of New Mexico. Book II includes information about the founding of the Catholic and Methodist churches in Santa Rosa, the first high school graduation, the railroad boom days, and finally the bust that followed the loss of the railroad roundhouse to nearby Tucumcari. There are also whimsical stories such as the sighting of a meteor that caused much commotion in the early days of Santa Rosa, the wild and wooly days of Cherokee Dora, and the role model for the title character of the famous western novel, The Virginian. Book II does much to both inform and entertain the reader. As such, it does much to enlighten the reader's understanding of Santa Rosa from a historical perspective.
