The Wood Nymph, Necile, breaks the law of the forest and takes the baby because she desires to raise a child of her own as mortals do, convincing Ak that since he made the law, he can allow an exception, and agrees to have both Necile and Shiegra care for the baby. Necile calls him Claus, meaning "little one" in the old Burzee language, but Queen Zurline gives him the more formal name Neclaus, "Necile's Little One" He is educated by the immortals of the Forest. Upon reaching young adulthood, Ak decides it is time for Claus to see how other mortals live. He sees war, brutality, poverty, child neglect and child abuse and is frustrated by mortals' very existence. Ak encourages him not to shy away from the mortals, because he is one, and must learn to live among them, as he cannot reside in Burzee as an adult. He settles in the nearby Laughing Valley of Hohaho, where the immortals regularly visit and assist him, and Necile gives him a little cat named Blinky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the author of the Wizard of Oz, The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is a 1902 children's book, illustrated by Mary Cowles Clark. As a baby, Claus is found in the Forest of Burzee by Ak, the Master Woodsman of the World and adopted by the Wood Nymph, Necile. The book is a unique Santa Claus tale, since it begins with him as a baby and follows him through adulthood. As an adult, Claus settles in the Laughing Valley where he begins carving toys. Seeing that most children are good, Claus borrows two deer and begins delivering tows to the children. He guides them by reins, thereby inventing "reindeer." Claus discovers that he can deliver the toys faster if he slides down chimneys and puts them under Christmas trees or in stockings hung by the chimney. Before long, Santa Claus gets help from fairies, elves, and even parents and toy-making companies to get enough toys for all the children in the world. This edition of the book contains all of the 161 original illustrations, rejuvenated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original Santa Claus stories, by the creator of The Wizard of Oz L. Frank Baum created the unforgettable world of Oz, but he also had an enormous impact on American culture by creating and memorializing the mythos of Santa Claus.? Writing to entertain his own children, Baum also captured the imaginations of children around the world with his images of Santa and his reindeer, stockings by the chimney, and a magical trip around the world in a single night. Here in one volume for the first time are five of Baum’s Santa Claus tales. Gathered from book, magazine, and Sunday paper, these are the stories that shaped the legend of the “Patron Saint of Children.” From Little Bun Rabbit in Santa’s workshop to the Wogglebug and friends making toys, over a century ago Baum created a legacy that captures hearts and imaginations to this day. Baum’s Santa stories may have been written for children, but will appeal to anyone of any age who still understands the magic and joy of Christmas. Featuring many of the original illustrations.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive history of the world's midwinter gift-givers, showcasing the extreme diversity in their depictions as well as the many traits and functions these characters share. It tracks the evolution of these figures from the tribal priests who presided over winter solstice celebrations thousands of years before the birth of Christ, to Christian notables like St. Martin and St. Nicholas, to a variety of secular figures who emerged throughout Europe following the Protestant Reformation. Finally, it explains how the popularity of a poem about a "miniature sleigh" and "eight tiny reindeer" helped consolidate the diverse European gift-givers into an enduring tradition in which American children awake early on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought. Although the names, appearance, attire and gift-giving practices of the world's winter solstice gift-givers differ greatly, they are all recognizable as Santa, the personification of the Christmas and Midwinter festivals. Despite efforts to eliminate him by groups as diverse as the Puritans of seventeenth century New England, the Communist Party of the twentieth century Soviet Union and the government of Nazi Germany, Santa has survived and prospered, becoming one of the best known and most beloved figures in the world.
