Book Synopsis Eccentric California by : Jan Friedman
Download or read book Eccentric California written by Jan Friedman and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Friedman's Eccentric America proved that the most unlikely events and landmarks could become tourist attractions. This award-winning title is dedicated to the sheer lunacy of California and her citizens, covering the biggest, the best, the wackiest and weirdest of the state's people and places. From art-car and golf-cart parades to the Valentine's Day Sex Tour at the San Francisco Zoo; from a festival that moons Amtrak to a town with its own language; from obsessed collectors of Pez, yo-yos, and bananas to kitschy theme motels and a man who built a three-storey mountain out of hay, adobe, and old paint. Eccentric California takes an in-depth look at one very peculiar place.
Book Synopsis San Francisco Bay Area Sports by : Rita Liberti
Download or read book San Francisco Bay Area Sports written by Rita Liberti and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco Bay Area Sports brings together fifteen essays covering the issues, controversies, and personalities that have emerged as northern Californians recreated and competed over the last 150 years. The area’s diversity, anti-establishment leanings, and unique and beautiful natural surroundings are explored in the context of a dynamic sporting past that includes events broadcast to millions or activities engaged in by just a few. Professional and college events are covered along with lesser-known entities such as Oakland’s public parks, tennis player and Bay Area native Rosie Casals, environmentalism and hiking in Marin County, and the origins of the Gay Games. Taken as a whole, this book clarifies how sport is connected to identities based on sexuality, gender, race, and ethnicity. Just as crucial, the stories here illuminate how sport and recreation can potentially create transgressive spaces, particularity in a place known for its nonconformity.

Download or read book Violet America written by Jason Arthur and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violet America takes on the long habit among literary historians and critics of thinking about large segments of American literary production in terms of regionalism or "local color" writing, thus marginalizing important literary works. Rather than simply celebrating regional difference, Jason Arthur argues, regional cosmopolitan fiction blends the nation's cultural polarities into a connected, interdependent America. Book jacket.
Download or read book Double Play written by Mike Weiss and published by Addison Wesley Publishing Company. This book was released on 1984 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of San Francisco and, to a lesser extent, the nation were throttled in November 1978 when a former city supervisor named Dan White opened fire and killed Mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk. Author Mike Weiss' book is one of the few that ticks down the seconds to the double killing and, though no one knew it at the time, to a social uprising that left much of the city in ruin. That Harvey Milk was the city's first openly gay official sparked a fury in the city's dense homosexual population and ignited speculation that White's motive, in part, was his acknowledged anti-gay position. For many, that two men were gunned down for such a hallow reason was perhaps only a small part of the complete story, and Weiss' book mercifully does not blame White's crime solely on homophobia. Instead, we get a picture of a professionally and financially desperate man whose act may have been largely to avenge his not being reinstated to his job after he resigned. Weiss' vivid reconstruction of the personalities and politics that were on a collision course emerges as an informative commentary on a major event in the city's rich history.
