Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican ranchos of San Diego County were a colorful and vital part of early California history. Ranchos covered the most fertile lands in San Diego and produced grain, vegetables, and fruits and grazed thousands of head of cattle, sheep, and horses. The dons and doñas who owned the ranchos were wealthy in land and cattle and built large adobe ranch-house complexes. The Kumeyaay, Luiseño, and Cupeño were the backbone of the ranchos, providing the labor needed to run a successful ranch. Daily life of the dons, doñas, and their families included the Californio traditions of family and religion, dancing and fiestas, roundups and rodeos, and generous hospitality. Many of the ranchos no longer exist. Those that are preserved provide a window into Californias past.

People lived here for over 7000 years and left much behind for researchers to find and interpret. Archaeologists and historians spent over 20 years conducting research to uncover the Peñasquitos story. This research continues even today. These explorations uncovered exciting and intriguing results. How do we know people lived here for over 7000 years? What was found beneath the ranch house that proved it was the oldest in Peñasquitos Canyon? What study proved it was the first Rancho in San Diego County? What made Rancho Peñasquitos a typical example of economic and cuiltural life in early San Diego? This book provides results for most of this research and details the lifeways of the people who lived at Rancho Peñasquitos. Color excavation maps noted in the book are available at www.penasquitos.org, as are two videos showing the historic rancho and an archaeological dig in progress.

First of all, to make a faithful collection of all essential facts pertaining to the history of San Diego, from the day of its discovery by Europeans down to the time in which the author was living. In the second place, to save from oblivion the rich traditions which cluster about the life of Old San Diego, a place which has all but perished from the earth, yet which should ever possess an absorbing interest not only for those who dwell about the shores of San Diego Bay, but for all students of American history. One will hardly find another book on the history of San Diego that will prove more valuable, informative and entertaining than this volume.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author and renowned Buddhist teacher Noah Levine adapts the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path into a proven and systematic approach to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction—an indispensable alternative to the 12-step program. While many desperately need the help of the 12-step recovery program, the traditional AA model's focus on an external higher power can alienate people who don't connect with its religious tenets. Refuge Recovery is a systematic method based on Buddhist principles, which integrates scientific, non-theistic, and psychological insight. Viewing addiction as cravings in the mind and body, Levine shows how a path of meditative awareness can alleviate those desires and ease suffering. Refuge Recovery includes daily meditation practices, written investigations that explore the causes and conditions of our addictions, and advice and inspiration for finding or creating a community to help you heal and awaken. Practical yet compassionate, Levine's successful Refuge Recovery system is designed for anyone interested in a non-theistic approach to recovery and requires no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism or meditation.
