Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famed period of architecture, design, and style known as Art Deco began in the mid1920s and lasted for a good 20 years. The movement left an indelible stamp all around the Bay Area but nowhere more so than in styleconscious San Francisco. The city's 1925 Diamond Jubilee, coinciding with the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in France, ushered in the Art Deco age to the city by the bay. The Roaring Twenties created a need for thousands of new commercial and residential buildings, and many of these, such as Timothy Pflueger's Pacific Telephone and Telegraph building, were Art Deco masterpieces that embodied the new "moderne" styling sweeping the country. Using a variety of building materials, including terracotta, Vitrolux, and neon, many of the city's graceful and dramatic buildings turned heads 70 years ago just as they do today.

Book excerpt: San Francisco is a city of neighborhoods, where fine restaurants are a part of everyday life. Savoring San Francisco gathers recipes from 100 of the city's favorite eating places, which range from boutique hotel dining rooms to tiny storefronts. One third of the restaurants in this second edition are new to Savoring San Francisco, as are over half of the recipes, which come from nationally acclaimed chefs as well as strictly local culinary heroes. The recipes range from simple ethnic offerings (Mango Chicken) to San Francisco classics (Hangtown Fry), and from elegant company dishes (King Salmon with Dungeness Crab Fondue) to Asian fusion cuisine (Wok-Roasted Mussels with Asian Aromatics) and everything in between. With photos and essays on the neighborhoods and special sections on artisan breads and cheeses, favorite local prepared foods, farmers' markets, and northern California ingredients like artichokes, salmon, and Dungeness crab, this stylish cookbook brings to life one of the world's most exciting food cities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major urban history of the design and development of postwar San Francisco Designing San Francisco is the untold story of the formative postwar decades when U.S. cities took their modern shape amid clashing visions of the future. In this pathbreaking and richly illustrated book, Alison Isenberg shifts the focus from architects and city planners—those most often hailed in histories of urban development and design—to the unsung artists, activists, and others who played pivotal roles in rebuilding San Francisco between the 1940s and the 1970s. Previous accounts of midcentury urban renewal have focused on the opposing terms set down by Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs—put simply, development versus preservation—and have followed New York City models. Now Isenberg turns our attention west to colorful, pioneering, and contentious San Francisco, where unexpectedly fierce battles were waged over iconic private and public projects like Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gateway, and the Transamerica Pyramid. When large-scale redevelopment came to low-rise San Francisco in the 1950s, the resulting rivalries and conflicts sparked the proliferation of numerous allied arts fields and their professionals, including architectural model makers, real estate publicists, graphic designers, photographers, property managers, builders, sculptors, public-interest lawyers, alternative press writers, and preservationists. Isenberg explores how these centrally engaged arts professionals brought new ideas to city, regional, and national planning and shaped novel projects across urban, suburban, and rural borders. San Francisco’s rebuilding galvanized far-reaching critiques of the inequitable competition for scarce urban land, and propelled debates over responsible public land stewardship. Isenberg challenges many truisms of this renewal era—especially the presumed male domination of postwar urban design, showing how women collaborated in city building long before feminism’s impact in the 1970s. An evocative portrait of one of the world’s great cities, Designing San Francisco provides a new paradigm for understanding past and present struggles to define the urban future.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of suspended particulate matter in the 1.4 to 27.9 micron range based on data gathered during four cruises off the California coast from San Francisco Bay to Cape San Martin is presented by means of isometric drawings as well as more conventional graphs. It was observed that pycnoclines set up particle 'traps'. In areas where a deep mixed layer existed particle concentrations were randomly distributed in the layer. Counts of larger sized particles decreased with depth; those for smaller particles appeared to remain about constant throughout the water column. Particle sizes and distributions reflected bottom topography and water depth. Shallow water stations exhibited higher particle concentrations, while stations over Monterey Canyon showed depressed counts over the entire size range. In localized upwelling areas higher concentrations around the areas' peripheries than in their centers were found. C values generally occurred in the 2.4 to 3.1 range, but significant deviations were noted during upwelling. K values often fell in the 50 to 300 x 103 particles/m1 range, but extremely high values were noted for the Davidson Current period. Phytoplankton blooms appeared to be responsible for 'knees' or 'peaks' in many of the size distributions.
