Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times Bestseller: “A hilarious take on that age-old problem: getting the beloved child to go to sleep” (NPR). “Hell no, you can’t go to the bathroom. You know where you can go? The f**k to sleep.” Go the Fuck to Sleep is a book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland. Profane, affectionate, and radically honest, it captures the familiar—and unspoken—tribulations of putting your little angel down for the night. Read by a host of celebrities, from Samuel L. Jackson to Jennifer Garner, this subversively funny bestselling storybook will not actually put your kids to sleep, but it will leave you laughing so hard you won’t care.

Book excerpt: Abandoned by her parents as a three-year-old, and ultimately leaving her home country India for a new life in America as a young mother of a three-year-old son, this is not only an immigrant's story, but a poignant and powerful memoir that is at first, one of sadness and continuing adversity, but ultimately one of strength, purpose, and the universal triumph of hope. It is a story of dislocation, disruption, and despair, and brings focus to the silencing of girlhood and womanhood and how with time, love, and support we can work our way out of that silence. Shabnam Samuel was twenty-seven when she moved to the US, carrying with her a troubled marriage, an almost estranged husband, and a three-year-old son. Hoping to create a fresh start from everything that was holding her down, it took Shabnam twenty-five years of trials and tribulations to finally find her voice, her strength, and her place in this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This previously unpublished diary is the best-surviving firsthand account of life in Civil War-era Atlanta. Bookseller Samuel Pearce Richards (1824-1910) kept a diary for sixty-seven years. This volume excerpts the diary from October 1860, just before the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln, through August 1865, when the Richards family returned to Atlanta after being forced out by Sherman's troops and spending a period of exile in New York City. The Richardses were among the last Confederate loyalists to leave Atlanta. Sam's recollections of the Union bombardment, the evacuation of the city, the looting of his store, and the influx of Yankee forces are riveting. Sam was a Unionist until 1860, when his sentiments shifted in favor of the Confederacy. However, as he wrote in early 1862, he had "no ambition to acquire military renown and glory." Likewise, Sam chafed at financial setbacks caused by the war and at Confederate policies that seemed to limit his freedom. Such conflicted attitudes come through even as Sam writes about civic celebrations, benefit concerts, and the chaotic optimism of life in a strategically critical rebel stronghold. He also reflects with soberness on hospitals filled with wounded soldiers, the threat of epidemics, inflation, and food shortages. A man of deep faith who liked to attend churches all over town, Sam often commments on Atlanta's religious life and grounds his defense of slavery and secession in the Bible. Sam owned and rented slaves, and his diary is a window into race relations at a time when the end of slavery was no longer unthinkable. Perhaps most important, the diary conveys the tenor of Sam's family life. Both Sam and his wife, Sallie, came from families divided politically and geographically by war. They feared for their children's health and mourned for relatives wounded and killed in battle. The figures in Sam Richards's Civil War Diary emerge as real people; the intimate experience of the Civil War home front is conveyed with great power.

Book excerpt: Dr. Samantha Stone, a civilian environmental scientist, is thrust into the middle of the male-dominated nuclear submarine world when the president tasks her to help plan a suicide mission in the Sea of Okhotsk. The objective: to locate and destroy a top-secret Russian command and control facility called the SOOF. The SOOF has been built out of sight, under the waves and sea-ice canopy of the Okhotsk, to support a Russian military coup that has been in the works for ten years-a coup that is only the first step on the path to world domination. Critical to both sides, the SOOF must be destroyed to prevent catastrophe, and failure is not an option. To accomplish this daunting task, a submarine, a platoon of Navy SEALs, and Samantha are required. Though submarine commander Captain Ira Coen initially doubts her abilities, it soon becomes clear that Samantha is essential to the success of the mission. The ensuing Okhotsk operation is fraught with surprises and life-threatening situations as Ira's submarine tactical skills and Samantha's environmental knowledge are tested to the fullest against seemingly impossible odds-with the fate of the entire world hanging in the balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dr. Ian Dunbar introduced his SIRIUS® Puppy Training in 1982, dog training mostly comprised punishing adult dogs for bad habits and lack of compliance. Dunbar focused on verbally cuing and creatively luring to achieve desirable behavior and using “life rewards” — sniffing, walking, play with dogs, and interactive games — to reinforce speedy compliance and good habits from the outset. His “dog’s point of view” approach revolutionized the field, and today there are few trainers who have not been strongly influenced by it. While positive reinforcement is now widely adopted, this new book details how other reward-training techniques have strayed from Dunbar’s original, quick and easy, highly effective lure-reward approach for teaching dogs ESL, in which we can verbally cue specific responses, offer heartfelt praise for success, and give guidance when dogs err. With Dunbar’s method, we can teach dogs when and where to eliminate, what to chew, when and for how long to bark, and when and how to appropriately let off steam. Barking Up the Right Tree offers proof that aversive punishment seldom works to eliminate undesirable behavior or to get the dog back on track. Dunbar presents numerous nonaversive yet highly effective solutions for misbehavior and noncompliance — simply by using the words you teach, and without even raising your voice. The culmination of fifty-plus years at the vanguard of dog behavioral science, Barking Up the Right Tree is an indispensable guide for anyone who wants harmonious, two-way communication with a calm, confident, well-behaved, happy canine companion.

Book excerpt: What if somebody finally wrote to his high school alumni bulletin and told...the truth! Home Land is a brilliant work from novelist Sam Lipsyte, whom Jeffrey Eugenides calls "original, devious, and very funny" and of whose first novel Chuck Palahniuk wrote, "I laughed out loud--and I never laugh out loud." The Eastern Valley High School Alumni newsletter, Catamount Notes, is bursting with tales of success: former students include a bankable politician and a famous baseball star, not to mention a major-label recording artist. Then there is the appalling, yet utterly lovable, Lewis Miner, class of '89--a.k.a Teabag--who did not pan out. Home Land is his confession in all its bitter, lovelorn glory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1933, Samuel Beauchamp awoke on an isolated dirt road, confused by his surroundings. Rows of citrus trees flanked either side, and a pipe-smoking man stood leaning on a pickup's hood, gazing toward a pair of motionless feet sticking up from a ditch. The feet belonged to a dead boy, Samuel discovered, and when he approached the onlooker by the truck, he found himself drawn inside the man's body, seeing through his eyes, tasting the tobacco in his mouth, and in full control of muscles and limbs. Though lacking any memory of that place or those people, Samuel would eventually come to grasp the scene - he was the boy in the ditch, murdered at age seventeen by his stepfather. This wasn't the day Samuel died, it was the day he was reborn as something else - a seemingly immortal entity with a whole world of bodies at his disposal. Samuel doesn't take his unique ability lightly. He spends the next twenty-five years studying the phenomena, only moving to new bodies when absolutely necessary, and always resettling in new cities. His conservative nature and discretion enable him to live fairly normal lives, until an ill-fated selection in 1956: a vicious biker known as Tinker. Despite his efforts to "clean up" the new body - moving from Kansas to New York City, landing a quiet job as a librarian, and enrolling in college - Samuel discovers that one can never truly escape the past. As he begins thriving in New York, Samuel meets the beautiful and brash Eileen, a mercurial woman with a sailor's mouth and an often-exhausting sex addiction (Samuel's best friend, Stan, doesn't see how this is a problem). A year into their tumultuous relationship, Eileen disappears, and the police begin investigating Tinker's illicit past. Robbery, kidnapping, assault, attempted murder, manslaughter ... Why would detectives bother looking any further? When all hope seems lost for this body and life, a peculiar attorney surfaces, offering help, and not only does the strange man seem to know where Eileen is, he may also understand even more about Samuel than Samuel himself.
