Book excerpt: Excerpt from Samuel Chapman Armstrong: A Biographical Study This brief outline of my father's life, work and character is written in the hope that it may be read not only by those who knew him, but by those to whom the name of Samuel Armstrong suggests no personal memories. The scenes amid which he moved in his early life have already become unreal in the dimness of a historic past; many of the problems with which he struggled are solved; even in the ten years which have elapsed since his death such a change has come over Negro affairs that their earlier aspects are almost forgotten. To reanimate these bygone conditions and difficulties which he daily confronted, and more than all to show in the midst of many intricate activities the man himself, an embodiment of life and aspiration combating by sheer determination all discouragement and hesitancy - this is my aim. This aim alone justifies a disregard of his especial request that no biography of himself should be written. He read many biographies. Some of them he liked and received from them help and encouragement, while others impressed him as "pretty good stories" written by "kind friends" to perpetuate agreeable personal memories. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Samuel Chapman Armstrong: Founder's Day Address, 1913 Years ago it was an honored custom in some parts of this pleasant Southland - perhaps it is today - for friends, months after they had lain away their dead and after time had dulled somewhat the edge of sad memories and toil had diverted minds, to meet and in memorial service lovingly revive the face and form, the spirit and the work of the absent one. In this spirit we who knew General Armstrong and you to whom his name is but a lively tradition have assembled, and on the spot, too, which he tenderly loved and which he forever consecrated by his life and martyr death given freely to the upbuilding of two great sections of the American people whom the State and Society had sadly neglected - the Negro and the Indian. I can add nothing to the fascinating story of his life which his daughter has told most charmingly and sympathetically and to which loving college friends have contributed delightful details on occasions similar to this. It is my purpose today to review with you the conditions that educated General Armstrong and the way that he used his opportunities. We speak of a man's environment as though it was born with him but it is as old as the ages which have developed it. Every political, social, or religious idea which blesses man today existed in crude form in the twilight of history, and these ideas, highly developed are still often found in the minds of men alongside those which are most rudimentary. In the same community live the pantheist and the theist, the communist and the believer in private property, the anarchist and the respecter of law. More than this the same individual may hold the most rudimentary ideas along certain lines of thought and well-developed ideas along other lines of thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Leader of Freemen: The Life Story of Samuel Chapman Armstrong, Brevet Brigadier-General, U. S. A This is a brief story of the life of a man who "made good." Doubtless he never once used that expression. Very likely he never heard it. It is equally certain, too, that he never applied it to himself or even dreamed that he had won any such title. If he had thought so this story would not have been written. For making good is something like popularity; - the man who tries to be popular never succeeds. If one makes friends he does so because of what he really is, not because of what he does. If a fellow's mates do not like him for what he is, they certainly will not be drawn to him by his open efforts to make himself popular. And the same thing is true in making good. Many a man who really is making good would hardly believe you if you were to tell him of the fact. On the other hand, if he should tell you that he is making good you would hardly believe him. Good old Archbishop Whately used to say of a certain young preacher that "he aimed at nothing and hit it." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best remembered as the founder of Hampton Institute and mentor of Booker T. Washington, Samuel Chapman Armstrong played a crucial role in white philanthropy and educational strategies toward nonwhite people in late-nineteenth-century America. Until now, however, there has been no scholarly biography of Armstrong--his story has usually been subsumed within that of his famous protégé. In Educating the Disfranchised and Disinherited, Robert Francis Engs illuminates both Armstrong's life and an important chapter in the history of American race relations. Armstrong was the son of missionaries to Hawaii, and as Engs makes clear, his early experiences in a multiracial, predominantly non-European society did much to determine his life's work--the uplift of "backward peoples." After attending Williams College, Armstrong commanded black troops in the Civil War and served as a Freedmen's Bureau agent before founding Hampton in 1869. At the institute, he implemented a unique combination of manual labor education and teacher training, creating an educational system that he believed would enable African Americans and other disfranchised peoples to rise gradually toward the level of white civilization. Recent studies have often blamed Armstrong for "miseducating" an entire generation of African Americans and for Washington's failings as a "race leader." Indeed, as Engs notes, Armstrong's educational designs were paternalistic in the extreme, and in addressing certain audiences, he could sometimes sound like a consummate racist. On the other hand, he frequently expressed a deep devotion to the ultimate equality of African Africans and incorporated the best of his black graduates into the Hampton staff. Sorting through the complexities and contradictions of Armstrong's character and vision, Engs's masterful biography provides new insights into the failures of emancipation and into the sometimes flawed responses of one heir to antebellum abolition and egalitarian Christianity. The Author: Robert Francis Engs is associate professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Freedom's First Generation: Black Hampton, Virginia, 1861-1890.
