This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes the estimation process for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 2.4.1 on agricultural sustainability, considering its subindicators, across different levels of disaggregation within a country. It complements the 2021 Sampling guidance for SDG Indicator 2.4.1 published by FAO. While the former brings useful information concerning a general sampling and estimation perspective, this guide considers the use of dual-frame sampling designs in national agricultural surveys, which combine area frames with list frames. Although the focus is on dual-frame designs, the results described in this guide also apply to situations relevant to countries using agricultural surveys based on single area or list frames. Methodological documents and reports of practical experiences that reflect the realities of various countries, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, were used as the basis for developing the topics in this guide, as well as for providing examples of the fundamental concepts in this initial version.

Book excerpt: The Second European Conference on Geostatistics for Environmental Ap plications took place in Valencia, November 18-20, 1998. Two years have past from the first meeting in Lisbon and the geostatistical community has kept active in the environmental field. In these days of congress inflation, we feel that continuity can only be achieved by ensuring quality in the papers. For this reason, all papers in the book have been reviewed by, at least, two referees, and care has been taken to ensure that the reviewer comments have been incorporated in the final version of the manuscript. We are thankful to the members of the scientific committee for their timely review of the scripts. All in all, there are three keynote papers from experts in soil science, climatology and ecology and 43 contributed papers providing a good indication of the status of geostatistics as applied in the environ mental field all over the world. We feel now confident that the geoENV conference series, seeded around a coffee table almost six years ago, will march firmly into the next century.

Book excerpt: Estimating with a high precision the number of agricultural holdings and other population-related indicators is one of the main targets of the agricultural surveys. Achieving this objective is not straightforward when using an area frame: the choice of the estimator is indeed delicate since it depends on the criterion to link the observation units (e.g. agricultural holdings or tracts) and the sampling units (e.g. segments or points). According to the rule chosen, different types of estimators are defined: the open segment estimator, the closed segment estimator, the weighted segment estimator, the Horvitz–Thompson estimator and the multiplicity estimator. Moreover, auxiliary variables correlated to the population indicators can be used to produce the estimates: this is the case of the ratio estimator. In this paper, we describe the estimators mentioned above, focusing particularly on the comparison between them when the target parameter to be estimated is the number of agricultural holdings.

Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia of Land Use, Land Cover and Soil Sciences is a component of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Land is one of our most precious assets. It represents space, provides food and shelter, stores and filters water, and it is a base for urban and industrial development, road construction, leisure and many other social activities. Land is, however not unlimited in extent, and even when it is physically available its use is not necessarily free, either because of natural limitations (too cold, too steep, too wet or too dry, etc.) or because of constraints of access or land tenure. This 7-volume set contains several chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It carries state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Land Use, Land Cover and Soil Sciences and is aimed, by virtue of the several applications, at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Fetters, one of the leading scholars in the field and co-editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, The Mixed Methods Research Workbook: Activities for Designing, Implementing, and Publishing Projects is the perfect tool for doctoral students and researchers who want support throughout their research project, as well as a practical way to apply the knowledge they’ve learned. With The Mixed Methods Research Workbook, you’ll be ready to tackle your mixed methods research project with confidence. Each chapter follows a familiar framework, starting with learning objectives for each piece of the mixed methods process. Readers have ample space in this text to write notes, fill out activities, and begin their process of actively designing and writing up a mixed methods study. This easy-to follow process gives readers an immediate structure to their projects. Exemplar boxes provide a starting framework, with the text encouraging deeper reflection on mixed methods challenges and opportunities. Stories from the field illuminate struggles and suggestions with the benefit of hindsight. Checklists at the end of each chapter help readers stay organized and key resources provide up-to-date lists of material for further study. From start to finish, readers can follow along with this text as they work on their projects. The text begins by assisting readers in identifying topics and conducting literature reviews in the context of mixed methods, zeroing in to address mixed-methods-specific challenges like integration, leveraging advantages of both qualitative and quantitative methods, and incorporating theory and personal backgrounds. Identifying data sources helps readers organize their data collection. Two chapters on research designs structure the data collection process with procedural diagrams. A unique chapter on mixed methods sampling offers application through basic and advanced designs. The book illustrates integrating and implementing mixed methods designs with practical advice for each of stage of the process. Ethics in a mixed methods context readies readers for the research protocol stage. Several chapters fully explicate the data analysis process, including developing a joint display, a state-of-the-art procedure for analysis and presentation of findings. Closing out the process, the text tackles quality and evaluation in mixed methods studies, preparing your study for publication, and writing up your article.
