Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on sample-data modeling for double edge current programmed mode control (DECPM) and its application to high frequency and wide range DC-DC converters. Steady state conditions and subharmonic oscillation issues for DECPM are addressed. By combining the conventional peak and valley current programmed mode control, a sample-data model for DECPM is proposed. A small signal model for DECPM is developed by deriving the modulation gains (Fm) and the sampling gains (He) for DECPM from the proposed sample-data model. The sampling frequency dependence on the duty ratio and a large current loop gain at high frequency for DECPM are emphasized. The analytical results are verified by the simulation. Finally, DECPM is proposed as a method to control the high frequency and wide range DC-DC converters. A 10MHz four switch buck boost converter is implemented with DECPM to verify the viability of its application to high frequency and wide range converters.

Without accurate prediction, and depending only on building the circuit and tinkering with it until the operation is satisfactory, the engineering cost can easily escalate and schedules can be missed. The situation is not much better when the circuit is built in the computer, using a general-purpose circuit-simulation program such as SPICE. (At the end of this book is a form for obtaining information on a computer program especially well suited for dynamic analysis of switching-mode power converters: DYANA, an acronym for "DYnamic ANAlysis. The work addresses continuous and discontinuous conduction mode under voltage mode control, and continuous conduction mode under current mode control. For each configuration, nonlinear and linearized sampled-data models, and control-to-output transfer function are derived. Using this approach, both current mode control and discontinuous conduction mode can be handled systematically in a unified framework, making the modeling for these cases simpler than with the use of averaging. The results of this paper are similar to results of Tymerski, but they are presented in a simpler manner tailored to facilitate immediate application to specific circuits. It is shown how sampling the output at certain instants improves the obtained phase response. Frequency responses obtained from the sampled-data model are more accurate than those obtained from various averaged models. In addition, a new ("lifted") continuous-time switching frequency-dependent model of the power stage is derived from the sampled-data model. Detailed examples illustrate the modeling tools presented here, and also provide a means of comparing results obtained from the sampled-data approach with those obtained from averaging.

General models are presented in a unified and simple manner, while removing simplifying approximations present in previous work. These models apply both for current mode control and voltage mode control. The general models are nonlinear. They are used to obtain analytical linearized models, which are in turn employed to obtain local stability results. Detailed examples illustrate the modeling and analysis in the paper, and point to situations in which the sampled-data approach gives results superior to alternate methods. For instance, it is shown that the sampled-data approach will reliably predict the (local) stability of a converter for which averaging or simulation predicts instability.
