Book excerpt: Nicknamed Mr. Show Business, Sammy Davis Jr. was a consummate performer who sang, danced, and acted on film, television, radio, and the stage for over six decades. In this uniquely intimate volume, the entertainment legend's story comes to life through rare family photos and a compelling narrative based on conversations between Sammy Davis Jr. and his daughter, Tracey Davis. The story of a future superstar unfolds beginning with his bittersweet childhood days, raised primarily by his grandmother in Harlem. On the stage by age three, he first became a star in vaudeville with the Will Mastin Trio. Davis was already an up-and-coming performer by the time he was recruited into the Army during World War II. As Tracey Davis candidly relates, it was there that her father first learned to use his talent—singing and dancing—as a weapon against racial bigotry. Davis's career took off in the 1940s through his sheer determination, talent, and the support of friends like Frank Sinatra. With tenderness and humor Tracey describes her father's friendship with Sinatra, and how he stood by him when Davis married Tracey's Swedish actress mother. In a time when interracial marriages were forbidden by law in thirty-one states, both bride and groom endured an onslaught of negative press and even death threats. Complete with rare personal and professional photos, Sammy Davis Jr. recounts Davis's adventures through the Rat Pack era, and the extraordinary obstacles he overcame to become a 5'6”, 120-pound legend who across six decades packed in more than forty albums, seven Broadway shows, twenty-three films, and countless nightclub and concert performances. What emerges from the pages of this loving, but utterly frankly written book, is a uniquely personal perspective on one of the greatest pop culture icons of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: Daring couple entertains in fast-paced archaeological adventure story series, “King Solomon's Journey” by Sammy Sutton presents one duo's quest to unlock the signs to save the human race. In “King Solomon's Journey,” storyteller, Sammy Sutton tackles those issues your mother warned you never to discuss: politics, religion, and sex. The novel is the first in the series featuring a verbal and inquisitive anthropologist Antonio Dominguez, a Miami born Cuban-American and a skeptical spiritualist Amanda Messenger, from the Midwest. Together, they tackle a host of adventures, including the discovery of ancient scrolls. When Antonio and Amanda find the 3,000-year-old scrolls sent by King Solomon, they unleash a series of clues, the key to saving humanity from a possible catastrophe. With this newfound possession, however, the unusual couple faces an enemy faction called OPERA, a group who will stop at nothing to gain possession of the ancient scrolls. Readers will enjoy following the often quirky and socially challenged 40-something duo—each just as lively as any 20-year-old—as they weave through this high-speed labyrinth of wisdom and intrigue. In order to reach the end of the maze and conquer the evil group, the couple must first tackle their once hidden, personal demons—before the adventure catches up with them. “It's like Indiana Jones in a romance racing against time,” Sutton said of this adventure, which promises to hook readers on the ongoing “Dominguez Adventures” series. This balance of romance, humor, and action will engage readers who appreciate a flair for archeological history and a fascinating marriage of science and mysticism.

Book excerpt: The story of one mother’s fight against the medical establishment to prove the link between infection-triggered PANDAS and her son’s sudden-onset OCD and Tourette syndrome. The summer before entering sixth grade, Sammy, a bright and charming boy who lived on the coast of Maine, suddenly began to exhibit disturbing behavior. He walked and ate with his eyes shut, refused to bathe, burst into fits of rage, slithered against walls, and used his limbs instead of his hands to touch light switches, doorknobs, and faucets. Sammy’s mother, Beth, already coping with the overwhelming responsibility of raising three sons alone, watched helplessly as her middle child descended into madness. Sammy was soon diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and later with Tourette syndrome. Unwilling to accept the doctors’ prognoses for lifelong mental illness and repeated hospitalizations, Beth fought to uncover what was causing this decline. Beth’s quest took her to the center of the medical community’s raging debate about whether OCD and Tourette syndrome can be caused by PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections). With the battle lines firmly drawn, Beth searched until she found two cutting-edge doctors who answered that question with a definitive yes. Together, they cured Sammy. Five years later, he remains symptom free.

This picture book addresses various aspects of serious illness, death, and dying that adults often find challenging to discuss with their children. Using language young children can understand, Sammy explains concepts such as cancer, chemotherapy, and the disease process. Sammy beautifully teaches the reader that even though her father may die, their love and memories will live on forever. In this journey of the heart, children and adults are reminded that illness and death can never overshadow the light of love. Written by a children's grief counselor, "Sammy's Story" approaches sensitive topics in a manner that encourages open conversations and promotes healthy coping strategies."--Provided by publisher.
