Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous anti-bullying programs in schools across the United States have done little to reduce the number of reported bullying instances. One reason for this is that little attention has been paid to the role of the media and popular culture in adolescents' bullying and mean-girl behavior. This book addresses media role models in television, film, picture books, and the Internet in the realm of bullying and relational aggression. It highlights portrayals with unproductive strategies that lead to poor resolutions or no resolution at all. Young viewers may learn ineffective, even dangerous, ways of handling aggressive situations. Victims may feel discouraged when they are unable to handle the situation as easily as in media portrayals. They may also feel their experiences are trivialized by comic portrayals. Entertainment programming, aimed particularly at adolescents, often portray adults as incompetent or uncaring and include mean-spirited teasing. In addition, overuse of the term "bully" and defining all bad behavior as "bullying" may dilute the term and trivialize the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sammy wants you to know he’s no blabbermouth. He’s no tattletale. No squealer or rat. He has one golden rule: he never snitches! When Sammy catches his best bud Carlos sticking a wad of gooey gum under a desk, Sammy doesn’t spill the beans. When the meanest kid at the elementary school sneaks off with an extra cupcake, Sammy doesn’t tattle. When the school counselor shows up 10 minutes late, Sammy stays silent. After all, he’s no snitch and proud of it. But Sammy becomes concerned when his friend is bullied by another student. Will he be able to stay tight-lipped when his best friend is called a crybaby and targeted for a beatdown after school? Sammy isn’t the only one who’s worried – he sees anxiety building in his friend too. Will the many “see something, say something” posters plastered in the hallways make Sammy rethink his attitude and report the threat? My Name’s Sammy, and I’m No Snitch is a powerful tale for children in grades K through 5 about why it’s important to report dangerous behaviors, how to recognize the difference between snitching and reporting, and why asking adults for help is sometimes the safest thing to do. Tips for parents and educators are included at the end of the story to help teach children how to communicate and put their decision-making skills to use when it comes to distinguishing “snitching” and reporting potentially dangerous situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crisis of School Violence is the only interdisciplinary book about school violence. It presents a broad and in-depth approach to the key questions about why bullying continues at an unprecedentedly high rate and why rampage school shootings continue to shock the nation. Based on extensive research, The Crisis of School Violence investigates human nature and its relation to aggressive behavior, with a special focus on the culture of violence that predicates school violence (including rampage shootings) and perpetuates industries that profit from violence. Marianna King presents the considerable psychological and neuroscientific research that investigates the effects of violent entertainment media on the brain and, subsequently, on behavior, which clearly reveals a causal connection between exposure to violent electronic entertainment media—especially violent video games—and increased aggressive and violent behavior. The book also reveals a more specific connection between exposure to violent video games and rampage school shootings. Ultimately this volume is a call to action that includes recommendations for parents, teachers, decision makers, and citizens alike.

(Take that, Nancy Drew!)" —Midwest Children's Book Review What Sammy should have done was put the binoculars down and call 911. What she does instead is tighten up the focus on her right eye to get a better look. There's something very familiar about this thief. But when Sammy eventually spills her story to Officer Borsch, he doesn't believe her. He treats her like some snot-nosed little kid. Well, Sammy's not going to stand for that. She's a snot-nosed seventh grader now, and she knows what she saw. And somehow she's going to prove it. The Sammy Keyes mysteries are fast-paced, funny, thoroughly modern, and true whodunits. Each mystery is exciting and dramatic, but it's the drama in Sammy's personal life that keeps readers coming back to see what happens next with her love interest Casey, her soap-star mother, and her mysterious father.

Book excerpt: To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing. Aristotle At the age of 37 I learned to see criticism as a valuable tool, rather than something to be avoided or feared. This came about in the life-altering workshop with Dr. John Savage. My eyes were opened to the possibility, wisdom and power of intentional communication including criticism. This change improved my relationships: personally, family, socially, professionally, academically, financially and with myself profoundly. I confess that up to that point in my life, I had pretty much taken relationships for granted. From that point forward I have endeavored to continually learn about communication and relationships. I now know that it is possible to present and respond to criticism without making things worse, without adding fuel to the fire. I now know that potentially explosive situations can be skillfully defused or diffused, so that people can dance rather than fight, even in difficult situations. I now know that people can move from conflict to conversation and acknowledge the observation and experience of the person offering criticism. This approach makes way for possibilities other than the fight or flight syndrome, manifested as a skunk or turtle mode of survival. Occasionally, there are freeze responses resulting in a stalemate. Fight or flight offers the option of going into battle or waving the white flag of surrender, yielding merely a winner and a loser with no resolution. According to Dr. Hendrie Weisinger, in the introduction of his book, The Positive Power of Criticism, the Greek concept of criticism is to serve as a neutral, objective appraisal of ideas and actions. Criticism can be regarded as a judgment, evaluation or an appraisal intended to improve or advance, leading to new resources and skills. For this to be so requires moving away from the attitude and belief that ones own presuppositions, perceptions, and biases are absolute and correct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed author Charlie Carillo revisits Shepherd Avenue, the novel that sparked his career, in a witty, moving story about growing older and (sometimes) growing up . . . For the second time in a few weeks, Joey Ambrosio has done something reckless. The first incident—climbing to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge to scatter his father’s remains—earned him newspaper headlines and court-ordered therapy. This time, he’s doing something arguably even more dangerous: buying his grandparents’ old house in the rough Brooklyn neighborhood where he spent an idyllic summer half a century ago. With boarded up stores and bars on every window, Shepherd Avenue sure isn’t the way it used to be. Then again, neither is Joey. In 1961, he was a newly motherless kid trying to find his way. Now a successful children’s book author estranged from his grown daughter, he’s viewed with suspicion by his new neighbors—and with amusement by the beautiful Puerto Rican laundress across the street. Amongst the colorful misfits of his past and present he’s hoping to heal old wounds, forge new bonds, and figure out what exactly brought him back here . . . and how, at last, to move on. Praise for Charlie Carillo and Shepherd Avenue An American Library Association Notable Book of the Year “An excellent writer and a marvelous storyteller. . . . He creates a special world on Shepherd Avenue that I loved to enter and hated to leave.” –Ferrol Sams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like everyone else, John and Lorraine Madge had ups and downs in life. They loved and respected each other for sixty-three years, motivated by the idea that the hard times only made them stronger. Theirs is a simple yet inspiring story, told here by their sixth child, Amy, who faithfully cared for them in the final years of their lives, ultimately helping them cross over to the other side to meet God. Beginning with her parents childhoods, Amy chronicles John and Lorraines journeys through life as they grew up and eventually joined their lives in marriage. As they brought seven children into the world and enjoyed all that life had to offer, the couple also endured struggles, including illness and the loss of a child. While sharing applicable Scripture, Amy details their final years on Earth, not only providing an inspirational glimpse into her role as their caregiver, but also into the loneliness that accompanied her personal journey as she grieved the loss of the most important people in the world to her. Memories of My Parents is a faith-filled story of love shared with the hope that compassionate caregivers will always know they are not on this path alone.
