Book excerpt: Seventh Grade is as close as youre going to get to Mark Twain. Had Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn had the same technology and number of friends in the same school as did the bad class, they would have done the same things. Take an adventure back to 1975; to a time when freedom was easily attainable and the school system put education ahead of discipline, instead of vice versa like it is today. You may just laugh out loud!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally Edwards didn't have many friends at Gravendale High School. Whenever Sally tried out for sports she would be picked on by her classmates because she was a tomboy. Sally had buck teeth and matted hair and slurred her speech. She also wore the same clothes to school every day. Sally was poor and was being raised by her alcoholic grandfather who didn't have long to live, maybe weeks at best. When her classmates got wind of the passing of her grandfather the following week they started picking on her pretty hard. Classmates would say things like "I can see why your grandfather died so soon. It's because you're so ugly and stupid. Just the looks of you helped shorten his life." Sally was boiling inside and had nowhere to turn or seek comfort in the arms of her parents. Sally's parents were both killed in a home invasion and the only living relative she had was her alcoholic grandfather. Sally's dreams of having a loving family, were shattered by the pull of a trigger. Sally never got much food to eat from her grandfather, because he was always spending what little money he had on alcohol. In her grandfather's mind alcohol is the only friend he had and cared about. Sally had to revert to going through neighbors' trash cans for her daily meals. Sometimes the neighbors felt sorry for her and would welcome her into their home and feed her, but what little the neighbors did for her still didn't heal the wounds she was bottling up inside her broken heart and the years of being picked on by her classmates. Things were about to come to a head with her classmates that would turn deadly for them all. Prom night was around the corner and Sally always dreamed about being asked to the prom by the high school's most popular guy. Sally's dream was about to become a reality, but only for a brief moment. Doug Stevens was Gravendale's star quarterback and the most popular guy in school. Doug and a few of his buddies had a plan to make Sally the laughingstock of the school. Their plan would push Sally over the edge and bring devastating consequences to Doug and his friends.

Book excerpt: Sally Jenkins, bestselling co-author of It's Not About the Bike, revives a forgotten piece of history in The Real All Americans. In doing so, she has crafted a truly inspirational story about a Native American football team that is as much about football as Lance Armstrong's book was about a bike. If you’d guess that Yale or Harvard ruled the college gridiron in 1911 and 1912, you’d be wrong. The most popular team belonged to an institution called the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Its story begins with Lt. Col. Richard Henry Pratt, a fierce abolitionist who believed that Native Americans deserved a place in American society. In 1879, Pratt made a treacherous journey to the Dakota Territory to recruit Carlisle’s first students. Years later, three students approached Pratt with the notion of forming a football team. Pratt liked the idea, and in less than twenty years the Carlisle football team was defeating their Ivy League opponents and in the process changing the way the game was played. Sally Jenkins gives this story of unlikely champions a breathtaking immediacy. We see the legendary Jim Thorpe kicking a winning field goal, watch an injured Dwight D. Eisenhower limping off the field, and follow the glorious rise of Coach Glenn “Pop” Warner as well as his unexpected fall from grace. The Real All Americans is about the end of a culture and the birth of a game that has thrilled Americans for generations. It is an inspiring reminder of the extraordinary things that can be achieved when we set aside our differences and embrace a common purpose.

Book excerpt: The new novel from the acclaimed poet and publisher asks fundamental questions about love and sex, friendship and rivalry, desire and power, and the age-old dance of benevolence and attraction between teacher and student. Sam Brandt is a long-term denizen of Connecticut’s renowned Leverett School. As an English teacher he has dedicated his life to providing his students with the same challenges, encouragement, and sense of possibility that helped him and his friends become themselves here half a lifetime ago. Then Leverett’s headmaster asks Sam to help investigate a charge brought by one of his classmates that he was abused by a teacher. Sam is flooded with memories, above all of his overwhelming love for his friend Eddie and the support of his most inspiring mentor, Theodore Gibson. Sam’s search for the truth becomes a quest to get at the heart of Leverett, then and now. The school has changed enormously over the years, but at its core lie assumptions about privilege and responsibility untested for more than a century. And Sam’s assumptions about his own life are shaken, too, as he struggles to understand what really happened all those years ago.

Book excerpt: 'A cast of nice, idiosyncratic characters . . . in the Turkish political climate' NEW YORK TIMES 'She held her readers' attention with her taut, inventive unfolding of twists and turns' GUARDIAN 'The comedy lies, as in the best and subtlest of comedies, in the exquisite patterning' NEW STATESMAN George is an unusually successful travel agent, providing other people with the adventures he dare not risk. Though content to wrap himself in fantasies, he is haunted by the fact that 'the important things happened whilst his back was turned' and by the belief that he fathered the daughter - now a desirable young woman - of his best friends, Sam and Claire. To avoid temptation, George stumbles into a disastrous marriage and determines to mould himself into a supportive husband. But a holiday in Turkey snaps his private world when George finds himself in the midst of intrigue and murder and is forced to acknowledge that life is not the fairy-tale he'd imagined. In this superbly constructed and mercilessly observed novel, part comedy, part thriller, Nina Bawden exposes the fictions we impose on our lives.
